Hi all,

To those whom have a 27-inch iMac. Are any of you finding that there is a slight yellow tinge when viewing on the bottom of the screen compared to the top? Its best noticeable when iTunes is open at full length, and comparing the top of iTunes to the bottom. I was just at the Apple Store and they didn't appear to have the same issue - but I was wondering if anyone else on here did.

Dave

Me too. In the basic 21.5". The lower zone of the screen has a yellow tint.

Is it normal?.

Some iPhone 3GS owners were complaining about this when it first came out, although I think a few genuine grievances were amplified into an epidemic of yellow tingers.

If you're not happy, get a replacement.

I'm also wondering weather it's normal or not. I'm going to pop back into the shopping centre tomorrow to double check weather they're all like that.

I've discovered that the best way of noticing is if you open a small finder window and quickly drag it from top to bottom, showing an obvious shift in colour (white to yellowish)

Having finally upgraded from the original 20-inch Mid 2007 iMac with the well known gradient problem, I'm not at all happy about having a similar issue with a brand new $2200 (AUD) computer.

Looking at mine right now and I don't notice it. I also checked store versions for this before buying it. I am not sure if this is a widespread problem, but I didn't notice any screen issues in the store or here at home. You have to use something besides itunes to check it out.

My 27" 3ghz has the yellow tint too. Bought in Sweden.

My previous iMac 24" was not perfect but much better than this one. I have contacted my Apple-retailer. Will keep you posted.

I have sent an e-mail to my apple retailer (Spain). I want a new one. I think this is not acceptable in an ips monitor from apple. And it seems not to be a general issue, as only 4 persons have complained about this. Maybe not everybody is so neurotic. :)

Let me know how it goes. Mine was bought in Sweden as well.

In any case, what is the best strategy for getting a replacement if you are not satisfied? This issue can be quite subjective, especially if the guy in the store is color blind :)

I will keep you all posted.

I don't think all users will be bothered by the yellow tint. This is primarily a problem for people working with photography, video or other color-critical work.

Apple is marketing this computer to have the best screen of any iMac ever, and my 27" is clearly inferior to my 24" sitting next to it, so I think they will replace faulty units without hassle.

It doesn't seem to be a widespread issue as the majority of machines around don't seem to have it. Although I took mine back to the shop and showed mine side by side with their display model and there was a clear difference. The bottom 1/3 of the screen had the yellow tint and it was easily noticeable when dragging down a finder window from top to bottom.

Its unacceptable so they DOA'd it and I'm currently waiting on a replacement machine.

Good news Davieis!

I went downtown today and checked an iMac 27" in the store and it had exactly the same effect as mine. Disappointing.

I asked another Mac retailer in my town to check their demo machine and he reported that it also had the same issue.

I have attached a file with this post called "greycheck.jpg". Download it, open it in Preview and start Slideshow to put it up in full size. Compare the upper and the lower grey bars - do they have the same tone? On my screen the upper one looks ok and the lower one is yellow. Much warmer tone. If I try to calibrate so that the lower grey bar looks ok then the upper grey bar looks purple/blueish (of course).

I will ask for mine to be repaired or replaced and we'll see if I get another one with the same issue.

"Now with the ultimate display"

Could you guys post a picture showing the yellow tinge? I'm curious to see it for myself

Thanks!

Ok guys.

I attached an image of my screen with slightly (just slightly!) increased saturation to better show the variations in color.

This is from photoshop and the color of the background should be solid grey.

I can also add that I have a latest spec Macbook Pro 15" at work and when I open the grey line test image (attached in post #13) it looks brilliant. Both grey bars look exactly the same...

I remember having a yellow tinge on my 2007 macbook pro but it turns out it was something easily fixed with a calibration program (I use supercal, free and it works well) but from your pic, this doesn't seems to be the entire screen that's yellow. I would take it back

Ok, now i've gone could feet for buying one. I don't feel like spending a hell lot of money and a few days later being unable to work with it...god damnit!

why oh why!!?

I always calibrate my screens but it doesn't work if the temperature/tint is different on different parts of the monitor.

So far I have checked ten 27-inch and three 21.5-inch and all had this yellow tint. I hope it is just the first production batches and that it will be corrected on future machines, otherwise the 27-inch is a bad choice for anyone who wants something that is average/decent for color critical work.

Like I have said before, I am not being over-critical here. I compare with the 24" iMac which is far better than this one. Right now it is actually easier for me to work on my Macbook Pro 15" (unibody). Viewing angles sucks on it, but it is more correct than the 27-inch iMac and uniform.

Jajo, did you talk to Apple Support about it? I also went to the store and noticed the same thing so I do not want to return it yet until I notice this problem goes away.

This is starting to scare me. I have asked the replacement, but if every one has the same problem...

No, I have only talked to my retailer. I will wait until he gets the next batch of iMacs and compare mine with them. If they are equally bad, I have to return the computer and stick with my 24" that has a slight blueish tint on 1/6 of the left side of the screen but it is nowhere near what I am seeing on the 27-inch. My 24" was very competent for color critical work and it also has an IPS panel. The 27" is unusable in comparison.

Isn't supposed the iMac i5/7 already be shipping? It said "November" well, we're already in november, or do they have a specific date to be shipping...or are they holding up because of this problem?

No, I think i5/i7 is shipping in November because they are doing some final tweaking on the GPU - ATI 4850 which is standard on the i5/i7. I know this because I tried to order the C2D with 4850 and they told me it was not being shipped until November.
