I'm not going to return my unit since it's not a huge variation in colour, instead I'll wait and see if apple will swap the LCD panel later.
I have had them swap a 24" panel in the past..

No tinge here. Was it noticeable right out of the box or did it happen over a couple days?

Out of the box and hasn't changed. It's not very prominent and i doubt most people will even notice it.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Just got an new i5 from the apple store. No dead pixels but damn, the yellow tinge is killing me.

Makes my 13" MacBook pro's display look so much better. I would
be extremely disappointed if all of them have the same problem.

After doing the "gray bars" test, I can too confirm this uneven color temperature issue.

I have uploaded the test file on our website,

Those of you who said you were not having this problem, please go to this page and carefully observe if the two bars look noticeably different, if at all.

UPDATE: I have made a new thread with poll options for 21.5" and 27"

Hi all,

To those whom have a 27-inch iMac. Are any of you finding that there is a slight yellow tinge when viewing on the bottom of the screen compared to the top? Its best noticeable when iTunes is open at full length, and comparing the top of iTunes to the bottom. I was just at the Apple Store and they didn't appear to have the same issue - but I was wondering if anyone else on here did.

Dave

Excuse my English!
in Italy have the same problem on the screen faded yellow, as you FIXEDThe problem?

Yeah, I think this is barely if at all noticeable for the average user and I'm not going to bother swapping mine for this even though it clearly shows the tinge, though if the blinking/banding/artifacts problem comes to pass, I certainly will. I also wonder whether the ambient light has something to do with this.

I went to the page. Everybody I have asked said the bars don't have any noticeable color differences.

I hadn't noticed it until I read this thread. I totally have a Yellow tinge on the bottom of the screen. The grey bars are helpful, thanks. Darn! 27" iMac just received last week.

21.5" here - yellow tinge on screen in bottom right corner and a similar patch just left of bottom centre. Called Apple last week and have a replacement on its way. Fingers crossed that the new one is better (the previous one also had a dead pixel in the middle of the screen).

My i7 iMac has it, and it was made in calendar week 45 (see the serial number ie. W8945xxxxxx). Let's hear from people with iMacs from later calendar weeks. Got it or not?

I got a c2d the day it was out and stared at it constantly for quite some time :) Then an i7 that came the 17:th, that I used for a few days too.

After that I stumbled on the other thred in this forum about the yellow tinge, and that was the first time I noticed it (both computers had it). The test where you drag a finder window from top to bottom and keep your eye on the white color makes this very prominent.

But I've been using it now for a few days, it's really not noticeable if you don't have large white areas covering the screen and really look for it. I compared to my old 22" samsung that I used for my PC, it has larger color variations (due to view angle). So while annoying, it's not a huge problem.

Exactly. The variation is less than is normal on cheap TN panels (viewing angle or not) so that's why I missed it until now too.

Well, talk about the power of suggestion. I never noticed this until I read this thread.

I too have a slight tinge, though it's tough for me to decide whether it's worth it to exchange. I wanted to keep this computer for 3-4 years, so it may be worth it in the long run.

When I first read this thread I looked and didn't see the tinge, so it may be something that developes (making me even more nervous about keeping it). I did at that time notice that if I changed the viewing angle it did seem to make a difference. Now, the only way I can get rid of the tinge is by tilting the screen all the way up (not a good viewing angle).

Plus, I just sold my MBP this weekend to recoup some of the new computer cost!

Out of curiosity, if I wanted to upgrade to the i7...would Apple let me keep the i5 until the i7 arrived?

Does this occur if you use bootcamp to boot into windows? If so then this may suggest hardware or firmware rather then OSX

My screen is very yellow also. I'm not sure what to do - the longer I look at it the more it annoys me.

Mine is an i7 with 8gb ram. I bought it from the Apple Online Store. Is it likely they will replace it? Do they let you keep your old iMac until the new one arrives?

No, it's a pain to exchange. It's a 'return' and 'purchase' procedure.

Second iMac 21.5" and also having this issue. It even seems worse tinge than the previous one which I returned.

The HD on this one(Seagate 1TB) is more quiet though and also no dead pixels or screen-glass gaps. Week 89 model.

So close for a perfect one, damn :p

Hmm, that's annoying. I played with the Calibration settings in System Preferences > Displays > Color and it seems to have improved considerably. I adjusted the white point so it has more blue, which has neutralised the yellow tint somewhat. It's hard to use though, and each time I want to adjust it, I have to go through the entire calibration sequence again.

Is there any free calibration software for the Mac that allows one to easily adjust the colours?

I just bought a 27" i5 Quad core and did the test and found that I had the yellow tint also ...but mine is very slight. Mine is a 945 batch. Since everything else seems fine with my new iMac ...I think I'll try to ignore the minor (to me) issue. I've seen where others have replaced there's only to have worse problems ...or a darker yellow tint.

I am a photographer but not a graphics designer ...and have decided ...at least for now ...not to worry about the issue. Hopefully my monitor will not get increasingly worse. I will probably conteat tech support about it, just in case.

Mine is exactly the same, very slight yellow tint. I think I won't exchange it.

I've seen this yellow tinting before...but only on e-ips monitors. Which means Apple is probably using e-ips. This is the cheap version of ips that is becoming popular, and that Dell had a hit with the 2209wa. By the way, I own three of these Dell monitors and one of them had TERRIBLE color uniformity. It's not so bad on it's own but when you ran it in dual screen it was just awful, because of how evident it was. The others have slight uniformity issues, but it's not a big deal on those. I can live with it, and I'm generally pretty picky.

I would be interested to really know what Apple is using. We know LG makes the panel for the iMac, but we also know that LG is the one making these cheaper ips panels. My guess is that it is absolutely what Apple is using since profit margins are king with them, even at the expense of quality and reliability. This would make the iMac's quite the cheap machines really...an i7 platform with an e-ips panel and the 4850 would be WELL under a grand to make so...do the math.

I actually would really like to try one of these iMac's, I could deal with the all in one compromises but...flickering panels, DOA machines, cracked glass, panels with uniformity problems, hard drive noise problems...am I really supposed to spend 2 grand to get all of these lovely issues? Something is wrong at Apple.

sorry to burst everyone's bubble but this is a common problem with lcd monitors larger than 21 inches

when buying a used 23" apple cinema display I went through 6-7 different monitors until I found one that was almost uniform ( the center is still a bit darker than the edges but it was the best I could find ). The 24 and 30" ACD also have this problem

Google "pink apple cinema display" and you will see apple has been having this issue for a while

I think most manufacturers actually have this problem, but Apple owners tend to need 100% perfect monitor saturation/ just anal ( and therefore) notice these things a lot more than the usual consumer
