Apple may launch three new iPhones in 2017, limiting curved OLED to one model - report

A bit of a bummer if this ends up being true. I can't imagine what the pricing of the curved model will be...

And meanwhile, rumor has Samsung pushing more edge panels to their non-edge devices, namely the standard S8.

So if all this ends up being true, not only will Apple be late to the game, they'll only limit it to their most expensive and highest end model. This is not an uncommon practice for Apple. While Samsung could be expanding their edge display tech to even more models.

I mean, I can understand because Apple requires more yields than Samsung and of course, they have to keep that profit margin fat and healthy, but are we sure we should really celebrate with pride that Apple has the highest profits? Doesn't seem to me like the consumers are getting the best options here.

Yeah, it's discussed on the front page of MR as well, where it's specified that it's predominantly due to limited available supply. Of course Samsung needs to secure inventory for all of their needs first--why wouldn't they? Assuming they move the curved edges to all of the top models, plus add the full roster of iPhones (purely guessing but I'd wage that more than doubles the need), your looking at an awful lot of demand that Samsung likely cannot meet, at least initially.

And let's flip the scrip for a second. If I were Samsung, would I want to make what's become a trademark of my flagship smartphones fully available to my biggest competitor? There's a reason why only Samsung phones have these remarkable OLED displays right now. ;)

And to be clear, I'm not giving Apple a pass here. When Samsung says they could've easily supplied Apple with displays for all of their phones yet Apple only includes it on a smaller volume, premium model, I'll levy my criticism quite harshly at Apple.

Meh, I'm not convinced on curved displays just yet. I go back and forth on my Note 7 whether I prefer the curved or not. Functionally I still prefer not curved, but I can appreciate how much more narrow the Note 7 is from the Note 5. If Apple just gave us edge to edge screen with no bezels on the side, and of course reduced the top/bottom bezels by 1/3 I'd be pretty happy and not give a curved screen a 2nd thought.

I'm right there with you doc. I think the Note 7 is a beautiful device and felt wonderful in the hand---far better than any of Samsung's prior curved display devices. The symmetrical design with the glass blending so nicely into the frame is terrific. But I still don't like the distortion present under the curve. I personally would take a slightly smaller display that went right to the edge of the curve or even a little big bigger phone with the same display size. The iPhone has a much smaller curve in the display glass that blends seamlessly into the metal frame--if they could just push the actually display out those extra couple mm (and trim the fat from the top and bottom like you said), it would be my ideal display. Actually, it doesn't have to be the iPhone--just have it like that on any phone. Maximum flat display with improved ergonomics.

I am kinda with you....If you think you get false touches on the S7 or N7 a bezel less edge to edge iPhone will do the same thing.
I actually like the bezels on my 6s+ even after I have been a critic of it in the past. I just want Apple to use that space on the bottom sides of the home button for some software buttons.

I like the asymmetry of the Note Edge, so I wish a current Gear VR would support it.

I've been pleasantly surprised by my Note 7 and the lack of false touches. If Samsung can do it, then I'm sure Apple can figure out how to minimize touches. But like tbayrgs my issue is the distortion and reflection I get from the corners. no it's far from unusable, it's really just annoying. But I'm trying not to complain because it's a freakin wonder they fit in that huge screen in such a narrow phone.

Here's how you could look using the iPhone 7 Plus:

Yup, if it's a supply issue, then there's not much Apple can do. Like I said, I understand their reasoning behind what they're doing. What choice do they have. And if they can continue filling that bank of theirs, why not? People have proven they're willing to pay for their products, even the high-end and expensive ones.

Just sort of sucks for the iOS consumer or generally any consumer who wants the latest and most advanced tech and features in their iPhone, but can't get it in a smaller form factor or in a more affordable option. And all the while, you could have Samsung actually expanding their edge technology to more of their lineup.

But hey, who knows what Apple might come up with that'll give them the edge, so to speak. I can't wait to see what they'll do with it. It would have to really stand out to differentiate from what Samsung has already done, and to help sell the high end premium model.

EDIT:

Also...

It makes me wonder about this year, too. Did they opt to not try the three-model format this year as they were rumored to have intended to due to supply constraints of the dual camera, or due to that dip in sales, or even due to the competition (not just Samsung, but competition from the low/mid range might make it harder to convince people for an even more premium model)? Wonder what happened there.

I don't know how anyone can see this and not reconsider whether we should really be celebrating Apple's superior profits when they think they can get away with limiting technology to the highest and most profitable models. They've gotten away with it before, so I guess why not? But is this what we all really want? More profits for Apple, less options for consumers?

I've decided to wait for next years generation but of course my phone now has a nice dent on the frame it scratches my thumb everytime I type on it, not a big deal doesn't hurt but it sucks.

So I guess if I had to choose I would choose between the N7, V20 or if I have to pay cash the OPO 3.

Samsung and HTC are already involved in their own way with virtual reality. Google is gonna have daydream.

Is Apple going to have anything to say about VR this year?

I guess their focus is on that home device...?

I am excited about the rumored Surface Phone from Microsoft. If it's anything like the Surface Pro 4, I will be buying it.

I'm way more excited about their MacBook and iMac updates than I am of the iPhone update.

Potential 5k display in partnership with LG. This could be the next "thunderbolt" display, finally. Really excited about this and the new MacBook dynamic function bar.

Anyway, iphone event is Sept 7th. Still looking forward to it per any Apple event.

I'm getting exited for the iPhone 7 next week. Rumors of a upgraded camera and specs bumps got me looking forward to it.
If these renders are true....... I can't decide which I like better that black or dark blue

Both are pretty slick...as long as my phone has an all black front, I could personally do either.

That being said, my excitement for a new iPhone is the least since the original iPhone launched (I wasn't initially impressed by the iPhone---go figure :p). The prospect of a dual camera to push the iPhone's photo capabilities is certainly intriguing but my 6S+ takes excellent photos and otherwise, there's nothing else here to warrant dropping another $850+ to upgrade. It admittedly makes me a bit sad since iPhone announcements and the tradition of waking up a couple days later at 3 AM to place my order a new iPhone were something I looked forward to every year.

In fact, this is the first year where I really am not very excited for anything expected so far at next months announcement. The reason for this I suspect is two fold; first, I think we are starting to hit a bit of a plateau in so many traditional tech categories. Smartphones, tablets, computers are already so good, we're not seeing the annual advancement that we'd seen for many year. My iPhone 6S+ is still very satisfying for me to use, as is my 2 year old iPad Air 2, and nearly 3 year old MBP. Second, I do think I'm become a bit exasperated with Apple's practices and stagnation as of late.

To be honest, I haven't found any of this years new tech terribly exciting. And I'm not saying we are seeing lackluster tech, but rather annual iterations are becoming less dramatic. Samsung has pushed forward more than anyone else but what I saw as flaws or weaknesses in their devices, as relating to my preferences, are still there so even those wonderful devices weren't enough to draw my interest.

I guess I'm waiting for another 'Wow!' moment, something really dramatic that seriously pushed tech in a new direction and what we're expecting to see over the next year hasn't really hit that button. I'm certainly curious about many things (Google Home, Assistant, and Allo at the top of that list) but not really super excited for anything.

Apple has set the expectations low.

Regarding those renders, blue just for the novelty, but the black renders are absolutely gorgeous.

Spot-on mate. Greed comes first, consumers second.

I'm very interested in Apple's camera on the ip7 plus, some leakers are stating that through the dual lens technology they will give DSLR's a run for their money. Having kids makes pictures ultra important, so I'll at least take a look to see how it fares. I'm also kind of excited about the black iPhone, that's long overdue.

I'm getting sick and tired of all the android weaknesses, carrier updates, carriers being able to change or delete features the manufacturer intended for the phone, privacy issues, etc. Just makes me wonder about the other side again.

Honestly no one really has released anything exciting this year, so Apple's release doesn't look that muted to be. This year lay low, next year spend all the money.

A smartphone camera making DSLRs running for their money sound VERY realistic, really!!!
Seems to be very trustworthy "leakers"...
