Its most likely perception combined with your using the phone more because of the new features. You really should have done a controlled test before you upgraded OSes.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. Early 3.0 betas did eat battery, and I know a bunch of us filed bug reports with Apple and did battery logging for them. Since beta 4 this has been resolved and I am getting perfect battery. But yeah, people have 3.0 GM so they are playing around with it more, and that is in turn reducing battery life.

I have 3.0 GM, and I have been using this iPhone from 2.2.1 all the way up to 3.0GM, never missing a beta, and the battery performance has never been better.

Annoys me how some people are so ready to dismiss a genuine issue for SOME people just because their phone does not exhibit the same. Just because nit all users are encountering it does not mean it isn't valid.
I can assure you that battery life on my 3.0 3G device is without a shadow of a doubt dramatically worse.

Its a GM... I'll save my ranting for after the version is released officially for the masses. Till then..... trust me, it took me a LOT of effort to downgrade back to 2.2.1

Lol, I'll do the same re rant, but GM does not mean perfect either. For the record I did a full restore to 3.0, did not retain any settings or apps and just enabled exchange push.

But it does make me a bit anxious... this is one heck of a problem and if they dont iron it out till the final release.... I guess I wont be using much of 3.0 until 3.1 or 3.0.1 comes out <sigh>

3.0 is weird, it seems like its different for everyone. some have faster performance, some get more lag. some improved battery life, some noticibly worse.

it'll be interesting to see what the overall opinion on it is once it gets released.

Update

Update:

Wiped all settings (45min full reset), then restored again with 3.0 and now battery life is back to normal.

Very weird but am pleased I can now use my phone for longer than 5 hours without re-charging. In fact, battery life now seems far better than 2.2.1 ever was as some people have suggested. :D

3.0 has made those using push email unable to get through the day without battery dying.

Not true for everyone. I have a first gen iPhone with one exchange push email account, and two IMAP accounts set to fetch every 15 minutes. In addition I have two caldav subscribed calendars that also fetch/sync every 15 minutes.

My battery life has been effectively the same compared to before I did the upgrade.

Battery is terrible

Yeah I first did an upgrade and then full restore to 3.0 my phone was fully charged last night. I woke up 7 hoursater and the phone was at 60% that is withno fetching, two push accounts on and bluetooth off. Is it helful to wipe all of my data before doing a restore?

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 32GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

I find that if I'm in a strong signal area I get better battery life, but in a weak area I get worse (actually a lot worse)
could be that they've tweaked some of the cell phone functionality with this release and that's why different people are seeing different results

Update number 2!

Update 2:

Well, as soon as I reinstalled all my apps, my battery life started plummeting again. Seems to be a bad app that does not play nice with 3.0. I re-downloaded them from the app store directly on the phone. Did not restore any backups but phone heats up and drains within a few hours.

Did another wipe and a restore and am now installing each app one by one and testing.
This is a slow process, but so far the following apps are good with 3.0...

Facebook
Remote
Aroundme
Chase
NY City Transit
AT&T My Wireless
Pandora
Now Playing
Park Maps
Quicken
SFO Lonely Planet
Skype
Slingplayer
14 more to test...

early but looks good....

Just did an install late last night and with about an hour phone usage and two more via ipod and some other little stuff, I got down to 20% this afternoon but my sense is that it's still better.

On the install I had a full restore from the backup fwiw. Not sure about other installs.

The other thing would suggest is that people power down and reboot the unit.

3.0 is darn good with all the nice little touches, landscape and cut and paste, synicng notes to Mail, etc.

No turning back.

how do i do a reset?

SETTINGS-->GENERAL-->RESET-->ERASE ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS

Bear in mind that this takes about an hour or so to complete.

This EXACT same thing has been happening to mine since i installed 3.0. the drain is terrible and I have noticed it heating up quite a bit. It feels like its an app that is constantly running. I've tried just turning the phone off then on but it stills drains.

I'm wondering if its just an app that isn't compatible with 3.0 yet.

If anyone thinks they find which app it is I would love to know.

I initially had problems with battery life on 3.0GM. I ended up doing a clean install of the 3.0GM and now my battery life seems better then it was in 2.2.1. I am getting about 4 to 5 hours of usage now, with 12 hours of standby. Not bad at all.

Is doing a clean install using the restore button or is this something else?

Better battery life here!

I am getting a lot better battery life with the GM then I normally would.

Last time I charged my phone was Thursday night, took it off Friday morning, a typical weekend. Only this weekend I did not have to charge it Sunday night for Monday cause I was barely missing any battery life indicator. May not need to charge it again tell Wednesday night. Hope this is not a fluke!

So I did a reset and it's even worse now. When I woke up today my phone was BLAZING hot. Think I really screwed something up here. Hopefully when the official release hits today I can install that and things will go back to normal.
