So I did a reset and it's even worse now. When I woke up today my phone was BLAZING hot. Think I really screwed something up here. Hopefully when the official release hits today I can install that and things will go back to normal.

I found my performance on 3.0 GM has almost made my phone unusable lately so I did a restore this morning (had originally upgraded to 3.0GM from 2.2.1 after downgrading from beta 5 a few days prior). I restored my previous backup after this and I have found the phone noticably more responsive. Flight control doesnt stutter every time an email arrives in the background now :)

My only issues are that the battery drain exponentially fasater and with that the phone heats up pretty bad.

Sometimes at work I would use the MLB app to listen to Cubs games. I would have it plugged in, but after having the app run for awhile the phone would have a noticeable increase in temperature.

Yet as soon as I updated with the 3.0 GM it got out of control.

I think I just took the chance of upgrading early and i lost.

My battery has been going quick! I deleted all my apps, I have nothing on my phone. At this point I don't even have phone numbers, I am just waiting till my 3GS gets here Friday. I charged my phone until Midnight, unplugged it, left it on for my alarm at 6:15 and it never went off, the phone was dead. I didn't even use it, I was sleeping!!!

I'm having the same problem. My phone got so hot the other day I shut it down. Battery life has seriously decreased as well. Performance has taken a hit, the App Store seems to take forever to do its initial load, Flight Control stutters and the iPod app skips a bit on occasion.

I did the upgrade to 3.0 but tonight I think I'll do a complete wipe and see if that helps.

I seriously hope using the official version through iTunes fixes this

It's because you're a Cubs fan. ;)

Don't worry about us we'll do just fine.

If anyone installs the official version that just came out and it fixes the issues let us know...

Installed official version on 2 iPhones in my household. Both installed within an hour of each other. Both have drained completely in under 5 hours. I have not toyed with it much - I didn't have time. The iphones are of different builds - about 3 weeks apart. Both have numerous apps installed. I haven't checked for common apps shared between them.

I have never had my phone die on me. It's plugged in when I go to sleep at night.

I know it's not much help but I think it's an app that's not playing well with others or 3.0 is about to be 3.01 in a quick hurry.

I had the exact same problem so went to 2.2.1.

On a side note, apparently restoring it to 3.0 rather than updating to 3.0 seems to have helped a few people. I haven't tried it yet as i have a jailbroken iPhone, but those of you on official carriers should probably give it a shot.

I updated from iTunes yesterday and the same problem started happening. The battery lasts like 5 hours on standby. I also felt that it started warming like other users have claimed. Not sure why is this happening but it definitely makes the phone useless.

I am also having this issue with 3.0 official.

I turned off Push for email (I have a Yahoo! account) and the heat went away, I will let you guys know if this resolves the issue. It may not matter if you have an account that uses Push, I think it may continuously try to "push" nothing also. We shall see.

"Restore" fixed my issue - just took an hour. And I also enabled tethering. The easiest way is found here: http://macmegasite.com/node/7173. No SDK's or uninstalling of iTunes. Plus, it flat out works.

I saw DL speeds of .18Mbps to .50Mbps under USB tethering mode. Not bad. And considering I was in a dispatch center filled with radio equipment, I'm sure speeds could be even better elsewhere in Las Vegas.

Usage stats: Usage @ 1hr58m and Standby 10hr53
Battery approx 70% full

I recant my curses upon 3.0 firmware.

Mines running really hot and battery life is really bad. Gonna try a restore and wipe the apps.

I think it might be messaging that's causing the problem.

My battery went down from 41% to 25% whilst I was trying to send a MMS. Turned off the phone and then on and it went back up to 41%. Then it went down to 37% while I was typing a normal text. It didn't drain as fast when I was on web.

I only ever have to charge my battery every three days because hardly use it. Last night it went down to 18% when I'd charged it on Wednesday morning.

Hate stupid 3.0. Makes my phone look ugly now without winterboard and low battery life.

I am having the same issue also. My 3G iPhone is running very hot and the battery is dying very fast. I would say I am getting about 3 hours from each charge. Finally I had to turn off the phone to let it cool down. I have tried numerous restarts with no luck, but haven't wiped the phone yet. A lot of people are reporting that it is a Push related issue.

Fix

Everyone, do a FULL reset as described in my previous post and then restore to 3.0.
I can assure you that this fixes the battery drain issue.

I have an iPhone 3GS and I've had my battery go down almost 10% just within the past half-hour. Is this normal for the 3GS? I just upgraded from an iPhone 2G and I thought the battery one that one was bad, but this is just ridiculous.

I found out why I was having battery life/heat issues...

When I updated to 3.0, it cleared out my EDGE settings (Network under General). Therefore, it was trying to download cell data and whatever else it pulls from GSM and also continuously searching for an available EDGE connection (which of course was not available). Once I entered my EDGE settings back, the battery issue has disappeared - in fact, battery life is now better than ever. This seems too strange for it to also be someone else's issue, but here it is just-in-case.

Good luck everyone!

I'm trying this now and will let everyone know how it goes. I did a restore this morning and the battery still only lasts about 3-5 hours. Hopefully the reset will work.

yeah....3.0 didn't work for me as well....and this morning when i woke up....my phone turn off on me again....so i try to charge my battery again....but this time, it won't charge at all......i try using the wall plug that comes with my iphone and pluck it into the wall....still won't charge.....i think there's some wrong with either my iphone or my cable....but i have no way of chasing after this problem since i don't have another apple device that comes with another cable.....

did my phone just die completely on me?? or can i assume something better??

I did this. No joy. Turned location push And fetch off still runs down battery quick . Might it be an app?

BTW. My 3.0 runs slooooooowwwww. 7 seconds to open SMS app. That can't be right surely? ( and as I did a full restore I only have a couple of texts in the app )
I installed the GM and the wife the official iTunes version and she says the same. The home button takes an age to respond as well.

If you disable your wifi can you still get online through the cellular network? I couldn't on mine until i fixed my APN settings. The phone was constantly trying to connect and it was eating up the battery life.
