I have two cracks on my phone. One at the bottom with the dock connecter and the other next to the silent switch.

HOWEVER, unlike most of you, I couldn't care less that they are there! In fact, I'm glad that they are there. This means that now when my screen gets scratch (or more scratched lol) and when the bezel get more searched, I can just say that I want a new phone because of these cracks:D

I know that this thread is about cracks in the iphone 3gs casing, but nobody seems bothered by how easily it scratches. My wife and I have had black 3gs iphones since shortly after launch day. We keep the phones in loose "Incase" holders and polish them only with soft cloths. The scratches first appeared on the silver Apple logo, which seems very delicate, and gradually on the black casing itself. Possibly they are caused by particles of grit on the surface when the phone is wiped rather than by the cases. I'm surprised that there don't seem to be any complaints about this.

I've seen quite a few complaints about scratched iPhone backs when kept in "slider`" type cases. Apparently, minute particles of grit can find their way inside the case where they create problems that are not noticed until the case is removed.

What makes you think they won't blame you for those cracks....its easier to exchange it when you just got it a couple weeks...but if it's been months...and if your screen is scratch you think they going to replace it???

I'm guess you'll be the one that will post in a couple of months b***** why Apple Store wouldn't replace my crack iphone that I got from day one.....

Man it's idiots that post this kind of comments that doesn't help the Ops on how to resolve his issues and concerns....

If it cracks take it back....the longer you have it...the more likely they're going to blame you...or Apple will release a statement saying it's user error and they won't take it back...Remember cracks start small and get bigger as time goes...by than it's going to look like you drop it....

Hahahahaha.....riiiight. I dont see why you are getting all worked up over apple not swapping MY phone LMAO! RELAX! Trust me i have other things wrong with my phone that i dont really care much about but will complain about when i want a new phone.

And i HIGHLY doubt that apple is going to say that the same cracks on millions of other iphones is going to be my fult!:p

After reading this thread, I took mine out of its incase slider to discover tiny hairline cracks between the volume rocker and the chrome bezel.

Can people confirm that they've received replacement phones for this issue? Did the "genious" give you any hassle because of them? My phone is only just over 2 weeks old.

You see the coating would be the thing that scratches.

Exactly. Why can't people fathom this?

Don't talk to us like we're idiots for assuming a coating put over something as resistant to scratches as glass would make it more prone to scratches. It's common sense logic.

Well if you think the coating is scratch resistant, perhaps you are being talked to like an idiot for a reason...

I seem to be the only person who finds the back more susceptible to scratches than the front. Or is it that I'm the only one who cares  Does anyone still have a 3gs with the silver Apple logo on the back unscratched?

Kind of a late reply here, but to answer your question: I had my 3G replaced several times due to case cracks, and they never hassled me. It's a well-known defect; if they give you a hard time just pull up this thread (and others) here at MacRumors and show them all of the pictures people have posted of their cracked phones. That should shut them up real quick. ;)

Anyway I'm happy to report that my six week old 3GS has a quarter-inch crack stretching up the back casing from the dock connector and another, smaller crack in the plastic separating the dock connector from the left screw. Actually, it is kind of a relief - I can stop babying this thing and worrying about scratching it, etc - as soon as I get a scratch on the screen (or dust under the screen) it's going right back for a replacement. I really hope next year's phone is built more solidly ...

Just checked my second 3G 3GB, and there is a crack from the headphone jack to the chrome bezel, a few millimeters at most. It doesn't bother me currently, but it's a reason to get the phone replaced whenever I want.
My first 3G had a crack from the middle of the dock connecter up about a half-inch, which is the reason that I received a replacement. That phone was never in a case, my current 3G has had an Incase Slider since day one.

Just took my iPhone 3GS out of its case for the second time since launch date. It appear I have two hairline cracks in the white plastic housing. One between the volume button and the chrome bezel and the second between the sleep/wake button and bezel. My White iPhone 3G, or first gen never had a problem, no cracks or anything, stinks that I finally got a little problem.

Debating on wether or not to bring it in... I really don't want a refurb and I'm dreading the possibility of further problems with a new replacement.

I just got my almost a year old iPhone replaced today for these cracks. I had a HUGE gash in one of the bottom corners and the guy decided to make an exception and give me a new white one. I was in and out of the store in 15 minutes.

Noticed a crack at my HP jack 3 days after swaping my first 3gs for dust under the screen 6 days out of the box... Just pulled it out of my slider and noticed another crack by power connector to bezel. Waiting this time before a swap.....

Pfft my iPhone will end up getting destroyed just like all my other phones cause I abuse them.

Doesn't bother me, just gives me a reason not to feel buyers guilt for upgrading.

Just inspected my white iPhone 3GS, and there are hairline cracks above the headphone jack, power button, and ringer/vibrate switch. Ehh, I won't worry about them unless they spread.

My brand new 3G S is covered in cracks in al the common places. I bought the phone on Sunday and noticed cracks in the morning.

Might be helpful to indicate your color. I thin the white plastic is the probelm here and may be more brittle.

My adventure.

I bought a 3G S two weeks ago. Noticed a hairline crack between the sim try and bezzle. Went to apple today. And had to fight the guy about it. Compleatly rude. Said i read some documents and I don't have to relplace it but if you really want me to I can. I said yes replace it and he then tried telling me it's a scratch. I argueed for several minutes about it. Finally got a replacement. So beware as he said " we have fixed the problem on the 3G S" good luck.

Guys, hairline cracks are going to happen on almost any iPhone w/ plastic casing. This is old news. I've seen about 10 phones between my roomate and I, none of them have survived more than 3 months without getting at least one hairline crack.

I think it's a waste of time to return your working phone to get another phone that will do the same thing. You should return your phone right before your warranty expires, so you can have a new phone a year after you purchased.

I feel no sympathy for Apple. They knew about it w/ the 3G and continued the design with the 3GS. They deserve to get their phones returned before the warranty expires.

I'm not even sure it's legal to resell a product with the knowledge of it being defective. Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I agree wholeheartedly. They made the decision to continue using the same cheap plastic and the same exact design, so they must not feel that the returns are a big deal. Otherwise they would've fixed the problem.

and here's me wondering why I can't get a 3G S... too many people are just obsessed with perfection, which doesn't exist in life, and should just put up with it!

As I will receive my white iPhone soon, I got curious about what Apple had don about the cracking issue. Apparently nothing, which is disappointing of course... but I agree fully with this comment. Apparently this was the cheaper option.

Well, I've had my 3G since Wednesday and there's no cracks as yet on mine. The only thing that's happened is that the chrome Apple logo has a scratch, but that's because I put the iPhone down on an old wooden table in the pub.

cant post in above reply, but this is exactly what mine looks like. In the same spot too. More of the same can be found at the sim tray and speakers. Considering this phone has been babied, im wandering if its a heat related issue. who knows.

YDI for getting a white iPhone.

I have something that looks similar next to my silent switch on a black 3GS. No worry though. Any phone I've ever had shows wear, why would the iPhone be any different?
