I have something that looks similar next to my silent switch on a black 3GS. No worry though. Any phone I've ever had shows wear, why would the iPhone be any different?

Really? I've never had a phone develop eight case cracks, spidering all around a connector port, after only two months of very careful use. I've owned lots of phones, but none this poorly built.

Well, I've had my 3G since Wednesday and there's no cracks as yet on mine. The only thing that's happened is that the chrome Apple logo has a scratch, but that's because I put the iPhone down on an old wooden table in the pub.

That "chrome" Apple logo will scratch no matter how careful you are. This is something that the most superficial testing would have revealed. It's hard to understand why they could not have found a more durable material for the logo.

Ugh, dammit, I just noticed my first crack. It's just from the headphone port to the bezel and there's only one, so I guess I'll wait ('cause I'd prefer not to have to go through jailbreaking and everything again until I remember how I did it! lol) until I see more than just the 1. If it only ever turns out to be the one, I can live with it.

So upon reading this thread I just looked at my white iphone and lo and behold, there's a crack! It's right by the ringer on/off switch and it runs between the chrome frame and the switch, then continues past the switch.

I had no idea it was there.

I bought this one on 6/21/09.

Should I take it back? Obviously the phone works fine regardless.

Its the while plastic. Its softer and more prone to stress cracking.

I am sure this will be fixed with the next iphone...but it will never be fixed for current ones.

Cheaper to replace the phone, the replace the case of the cracked phone back at the Apple service center.

I wouldn't be too sure that this case cracking problem would be fixed in next version of iPhone. The 3G has the same problems, Apple didn't fix it for 3Gs...

i haven't been able to see cracks on other people's black 3g and 3gs, but the white is very apparent. my 3gs has them (i'm unlocked without a contract so I am s.o.l. oh well that's my lost cost iphone for you) and a few other white 3g have them. my sister, friend, and colleagues who have black do not appear to have cracks.

Cracks

Hi guys

So after stumbling upon this issue online, I decided to take a look at my iPhone 3GS 32G today which was purchased on 9-11-2009 at an Apple store. Sure enough there is two small cracks from the right speaker hole to the chrome embezzlement thats somewhat noticeable. This aggrivates me because it has been in a case since the iPhone was taken out and activated by the Apple store genius that helped.

My dillema is that I use Tmobile with the iphone and have to have it run on 3.0.1 or 3.0. I heard rumors that the newer 3GS models that leave the store are installed with 3.1 or the geniuses install 3.1 before they let the iphones go.

Do you think its worth it for me to go to the apple store and try to get a new phone. Will they give me a refurbished one? I got my phone through my Boyfriend who has AT&T and he still has his 3G and we kind of did an early upgrade for $499.

I know its tiny cracks but Im more so worried that it can create moisure issues and rust the inner part of the phone somehow. I live in Hawaii and its humid here.

Please let me know what you all think. Any feedback is greatly appreciated :)
Thanks

I will tell you a depressing secret. use a laser pointer and aim the beam at an angle so it spreads across the black back of your phone. it will light up like a bright starry night with cracks and stress fractures. its just because its black you cant see it. try it:eek:

Oh and ya, dont return your phone until they find a way to unlock a factory 3.1. It will happen, just wait a while.

this thread is a curse lol

had a black 3G and I checked everything after a year of constant use and not a crack. now I just checked my white 3GS and I've got a hairline from the bottom right screw to the chrome bezel.

i've seen what cracks turn into overtime and it ain't pretty

would apple replace just one crack? I would be happy if this persists that they give me a black one instead

Exactly. Why can't people fathom this?

Well if you think the coating is scratch resistant, perhaps you are being talked to like an idiot for a reason...

Actually I was arguing that the coating isn't scratch resistant. I edited the post you quoted. Probably makes a little more sense now. ;)

I have a fairly tight-fitting Speck Candy Shell case. It was harrowing getting it onto the phone, should I take it out of the case to check it?

My 3Gs is also having this problem. I went to the Genius bar in Toronto and he told he nothing could be done as it is a 3Gs not a 3G and maybe to come back if they got worse. Well look at this crack, two that joined together and now a piece is probably going to fall out. Also i think that around the headphone jack will get worse too.

It looks like you've dropped your phone^^ which probably caused the cracks.

Just look at the chrome around the headphone jack...

My original 3G had zero cracks since I bought it, but then last week I noticed THREE cracks all in different areas. I immediately called Apple and they asked for my serial number, but then told me "your phone is 79 days past your hardware warranty." GREAT! NOW WHAT DO I DO ????  :apple:

(note: My contract doesn't expire until July. This triple-cracked phone is supposed to stay in one piece for the next nine months??? I don't think so. FYI: my phone is not cracked due to abuse. I am an adult; not a kid. I don't abuse my phone)

You could probably get a replacement but with a fee, if it bothers you enough

Will it stay in one piece?

Yes... 3 hairline cracks all in different places arent going to make the phone fall apart

My 16gb White 3gs, which itself is a replacemen for a previous 3gs that had a dead screen, is just under 3 months old and has developed hairline cracks around the mute switch, as im still within 12 months warranty can I get mine replaced at apple?

It seems like people notice this on the white ones. Is it fun to have to keep going back to the store to replace an item for every small sign of imperfection?

*I saw a little nick on the back Apple logo that when observed under scrutiny and appropriate lighting conditions, shows a small little line. I am getting my phone replaced by Apple ASAP *

A $599/$699 phone shouldn't crack like the iPhone has for the last two years. The build quality is a joke!

the chrome around my headphone jack looks like that from pocket dust. Its been in a case all its life and been babied and not dropped

I may not be the smartest person out there, but I'm definitely not stupid.

Just look at the CHIPS in your chrome. That's not caused by pocket dust...

The genius I talked to says that the 3GS has a metal plate behind the plastic so if it cracks it will cause no structural damage.
