Still can't get mine to update. Tonight listened to some music, placed it the case while charging. Nothing after an hour. All this while it shows "connected" in the bluetooth. I tried out of the case. Tried both charging at 100%. Nada. I am one of the unfortunately folks that has the extreme battery drain. I am getting close to my return window being over and really wanted to see what this firmware does. I think they sound excellent, I just can't keep them if they are having these issues.
I'm same as you. It took awhile before I received the update. Just leave it plugged in and let it continue to charge overnight, hopefully you'll get the new update in the morning. Remember to leave your router on.

This is just a casual observation, but mine updated yesterday evening, and were charged to 100%. I unplugged around 8:00 pm I think (but didn't use), and this morning around 10.5 hours later, it was still reporting 100%. I can't say for certain, but I'd expect at least a few % drop. I wonder if Apple adjusted the standby behavior to go into low-power mode after a shorter idle/no-movement period?

Yep that’s right. It can take a few hours and people just have to be patient

I doubt it. In my experience, when they are at 100% they don’t drop a percent for ages, like 10–12 hours, then drop at the normal rate

Right, the fact that I can't force an update, like 99% of the devices I own, is annoying. I guess I wanted to really give these headphones a fair chance to see battery drain issues resolve for me post update. I'm very close to the return window ending, thus why I'd like to get them updated ASAP. Oh well.. Likely will return them, as the battery drain is a too huge of a flaw to put up with on 600 dollar headphones. Cheers.

Both of mine updated that day at night when left plugged out of the case and connected to an iDevice.

My only observation is that the sub-bass is now a bit less intense which appears that they have made it more neutral sounding.

Mine updated. So far no more Bluetooth dropouts. But I will hold out a bit more before a final verdict. Listening now, I‘d like to think that they sound somewhat more balanced. But the placebo effect may be strong in this one. Increased battery drain has not been an issue for me for quite a while. So cannot comment on that one.

Still can’t get mine to update. Try in and out of case, charger, no charger, etc.

It’s infuriating that you can’t initiate the update.

Yes it is, but they do update on their own. Just plug them in to charge (out of their case). Connect to them with your iPhone and walk away. Just rememeber, a watched pot does not boil.

I’ve tried every combination for hours at a time.

When my return of them hinges on the a battery drain to be resolved and my window for doing so is close it does add a bit of urgency. I’ve tried all these methods listed to get it to update. I’ve done a full reset when none worked. Out of the case. In the case. Charging. Not charging. Connected to my phone, not connected.

I enjoy the sound but the user experience is not worthy of their price tag.

Maybe that's half of the problem ;)

They need to be out of the case and charging. They also need to be connected to your phone.

This process is no different than updating an Apple Watch except it's an iPod Max instead of the watch.

The more you’re fiddling around with them, the longer it will take for them to update.

The process is way different than the watch as I can force a update. Any time. For the AirPods it’s a if the sun stars align it seems. Each “method” I’ve read is different. So it’s random. Perhaps I just have a bum set of cans.

First night in case charging overnight connected.

Second night out of the case charging connected.

I don’t fiddle with them all day.

It's random and who knows how Apple "rolls" out these updates. Nothing is certain and therefore it's best to just sit back and enjoy the product and wait until I happens, because one thing is sure: they'll update eventually.

Turns out it -may- something on my local home network blocking Apple's update processes. It doesn't do this for any other device though.

But the moment I turned off WiFi and connected my phone via cellular it updated within 5 minutes. So for those that may still be having issues, try connecting the AirPods to your phone and then connect to cellular. However it could all be coincidence and there's no rhyme or reason.

For the record, it updated with my Phone connected to the AirPods, while charging. The AirPods were charging out of the case right next to the phone. Both at 100% charge and turning off WiFi to connect to cell updated it almost immediately.

For what it's worth, mine updated without ever plugging them in. I used them yesterday on my Mac for a Zoom meeting, with no further use later in the day (first time using them this week). Today, I put them on to listen to a playlist and had to immediately turn the volume down-- they definitely seem to be notably louder now than they were before. Checked, and sure enough, the new firmware was installed.

I'd agree with the 10-15% assessment. (Which I'm glad for. Volume was not a problem on 99% of my listening, but there occasionally would be a soft track that I wished I could nudge higher, and I was frequently listening pretty close to max volume on some music.)

After the update mine are louder. Not that volume was a problem before, just that music I listen to all the time within now louder. Had to adjust volume a bit lower. I’d say about 10-15% louder.

Finally got them to update by hard resetting headphones, putting them in the Apple case, plugging them in, and putting phone in charger and walk-in away for an hour.

I will be furious if Apple have messed with the sound profile of these.
I spent a lot of money on these and I kept them past the return window because I love the sound. How dare they change the way MY headphones sound without my consent, I want them to stay how they were sound wise, and I have no option to do so. Especially as they have zero EQ options to adjust apart from the Accommodations ones which are awful for me

Finally got mine to update by plugging it in without putting it in the bra case, with the iPhone near it. Initial testing impression: the bass is much stronger. The noise cancellation is also stronger.

A EQ needs to happen. They can have them default to Apples recommendations but having this option available would be awesome and available on cans that are a fraction of the cost.

honestly this is a fair criticism and one of the few things i hate about the entire airpods line and actually all wireless bluetooth headphones/speakers

you can google about how bose deliberately nerfed the last gen qc before their new 700 was released, but the main problem here is that we have no control with whatever the mfg

i think sony is the only one that has like a standalone eq app for their line
