Yup, if you just want to get to your previous app, you can do that as well. It's really a very handy shortcut, quick swipe brings the previous app, a slower swipe brings out the entire app switcher. I wonder whose brilliant idea to remove it :annoyed:

That is the one feature that made me hate the iOS 11 betas. Well, besides the gigantic font used at the top of the mail and Messages app, for example, telling me that I'm in the Mail app and the Messages app.

I’m surprised, I use to kinda despise the feature a little bit. My case use to always get in the way so I could never really do the animation fluidly so it just always felt clunky.

I went caseless in the end. I’m surprised they just removed it though. The aim I was getting from ios11 was trying to make 3D Touch more widespread within the operating system.

The removal of 3D Touch App Switching was intentional. During the beta someone created a bug report about it and Apple closed it with the comment saying that they made the conscious decision to remove it. So it's not coming back guys.

You'll only miss it for a year - when the gestures make their way across the whole iPhone range, you'll be able to long swipe up for the App Switcher & scroll left/right along the bottom (the Home stripe) to instantly switch between Apps.

Hmm, source?

No reason I can see they haven’t given us that feature now unless it’s one of those “look what the new phones can do that the old ones can’t” things. The iPad Pro got the swipe so the 6S and 7 should be able to do it.

The 3D Touch app switcher was my main use of 3D Touch. Really hacked off they just took it away potentially just to give the new phones an edge

Ok, whilst the "X" form factor hasn't been confirmed for all 2018 iPhones, there's a fair chance it will.

The gestures are confirmed though. Switching between Apps will be very intuitive with them.
Hmm, okay, do you have any video on this? I can't seem to recall seeing iPhone X app switching gesture

Exactly! Why remove a well-working feature just to give the new phones an edge, if it's true, then they should be sued for intentionally removing features to promote a new product.

They needed to remove this gesture from the X. (because the main gesture for app switching is now also a swipe of some sort, but from another side, and mind you they didn't even use 3D touch for the new gesture but long touch/slow swipe, so they probably have some hard data against that, or they're preparing for a bezel less ipad without 3D touch)

But, they couldn't remove it ONLY from the X, because consistency.

So they removed it also from the relatively few (6s 6s+ 7 7+) pre-ios11 phones with 3D touch.

5S 6 6+ SE 8 and 8+ never had this in the first place.

Consistency? The iPhone X accesses the control centre by swiping DOWN from the top right of the phone and goes to app switcher by swiping up from the bottom of the phone. That is inconsistent with any iPhone before. Apple don’t care about consistency they care about making their new shiny look better than the old shiny. The “relatively few” phones that were using this feature are every phone released for the last two years. That’s a lot of iPhones that had that feature. We’ve been trained to use it for two years on our phones and to take it away for no obviously sensible reason is just a bad UX. I’m fairly sure a bit of code that enabled / disabled it based on phone model would not have exactly filled iOS 11 up with unnecessary bloat. I hate with a passion having to double press my home button to access app switcher and I’ve also lost the ability to quickly switch between two apps. Both of these features I used a lot. I’m entitled to be grumpy about it.

As for “these phones never had it in the first place” that just makes no sense. You don’t miss what you never had but to have something useful taken off your device - something that was heavily demo’d as a huge feature when the 6S was announced - just stinks of upsell.

25:54-26:20...

That is inconsistent with any iPhone before.

Would you agree most people use the App switcher more than control centre?

I’d think this is the reasoning behind Apple's decision to rearrange the swipe up/down gestures on the X, & why they intend to make these rearrangements consistent across their future form factor of iPhones.

I use it all day to switch between apps. I hate it that they have taken this gesture out.
I ordered an iPhone 8 Plus, but I am returning this right away because of this.

You know what else really pissed me off.
They completely removed ringtones from the latest itunes version. I found out after I updated :(
Also they completely removed the appstore, download and update apps and the option to rearrange the apps on the itunes screen.
So I have dozens of custom ringtones that I cannot sync any more unless I now purchase ringtones from itunes and redownload them on the device. Another greedy move.
I dont know what they are doing lately but it seems like they keep removing useful options and features.
[doublepost=1505874549][/doublepost]I just send mine in also in a not very nice tone :D
Not sure if they listen to users input or just ignore and continue as usual.
You can still manually add ringtones from your windows or MacBook. They’ve removed it as a core feature in iTunes as they are trying to streamline the program.

Apple instructions here:

Haven’t tried it yet but it looks like you basically just drag and drop from Finder or File Explorer into iTunes and on to your phone, same with apps. So the only change is that you no longer keep a ‘library’ of apps and tones within iTunes.

True. And some iPhones also have an home button.
There's no denying there are currently some inconsistencies in the line-up.
But I feel that this particular feature is problably being "actively phased out", in a consistent manner.

You have every right to be grumpy, you paid for something and now some functionality is being taken away.
I'm also losing tens of € in 32bit apps, by the way. (I won't go down the "we weren't forced to upgrade" route because that's ridicolous)

I just wanted to put things in context.
Another context-defining elephant in the room is that probably 3D touch as a whole didn't live up to the hype and I'm guessing it will never be part of a major system-wide function again.

Okay, so I updated to iOS11 today and to my surprise, my most used 3D Touch gesture is now gone. Seriously Apple? Why?

So here's my suggestion to you all, tweet to Phil and Tim and Apple Support asking for the 3D Touch App Switcher Gesture to be reimplemented. Hopefully, with enough spam, they'll add it back.
I came here to see if anyone else noticed this? Holy crap it’s annoying! Feels like a massive step back having to use the home button all the time now.

It was pretty much the only thing I used 3D Touch for aside from previewing pictures and webpages.

I don’t mind iOS 11, but for the love of god Apple, bring this back.

Are you serious?
That's beyond pointless.

Also I just noticed that turning off wifi in control centre just disconnects you from it, not actually switch it off. To switch off wifi completely you need to turn it off in settings. Epic fail

I reported this as a bug, though it was probably inetional.

Also, turning off Hot Spot in control center appears to not work at all for me. Can someone else test that?

That doesnt make any sense.
Save battery by letting radios stay powered on? :D
I dont know what is going on lately with Apple...

I read somewhere that it was supposed to save battery by not turning the radios on and off all the time. I'd rather just have the old way, though.
[doublepost=1505914771][/doublepost]They're trying to streamline their pockets, that's what they're doing.
They want you to purchase ringtones instead of having the option to transfer them over from your computer.
So how do I remove them once I drag them over and later I dont need them? I cant...
That's a really streamlined and intuitive method huh :D

I have the same problem. I would "3D Touch App Switcher" get back. The Apple's arrogance towards its customers is striking. Iam angry... and sad, future will worst.

I’ll have a play around later and see. Possibly a swipe to delete option in ios11? If the option is still there to add custom ringtones I can’t agree with you that it’s a money grabbing exercise. People have been screaming for iTunes to be simplified and streamlined for years. Sometimes they’re damned if they do damned if they don’t.

I dont know man, streamlined and simplified doesnt mean removing useful features.
Pretty soon they wont allow you to sync music and videos either. You'll have to download/purchase them via the itunes store ;) Its all about money.
Taking away options/features is never a good thing.
