I dont know man, streamlined and simplified doesnt mean removing useful features.
Pretty soon they wont allow you to sync music and videos either. You'll have to download/purchase them via the itunes store ;) Its all about money.
Taking away options/features is never a good thing.
We’re going around in circles here, but they haven’t taken away the option, just changed the way you have to do it...

Well, technically it’s the same way that was always there. They added a new way in addition to the old way with 3D Touch and now they took that new way away leaving the old way that was always there basically.

But how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?

(I’m kidding. I parsed it eventually but that’s a helluva sentence! :p)

Having checked with my panel of non-pro iPhone users (aka 'the wife') she wasn't even aware this feature existed.

I guess it's mostly a power-user thing - I use it all the time. Hopefully it will come back. We saw key features missing in iOS 10.0 that came back within the first few point-releases.

It's quite common with software for this to happen but usually signifies a bigger change in the underlying architecture. I guess an OS-level change qualifies...

I dont think you get it. Nothing done by Apple is random, its all about the mighty dollar.
They didnt just change the way you have to do it.
If I didnt search online and find the workaround I would not be able to sync my ringtones since the option is not there any more on itunes on my computer.
Most people will not just figure it out on their own dont you think? Because nothing about this "new way you have to do it" is intuitive or easy with no option to remove ringtones.
Why do you think Apple just made it extra hard and near impossible to sync your own ringtones?
Because its better for the user and more streamlined? Give me a break.
Its intentional and they might remove the option completely with a future itunes update.
Wake up and smell the coffee ;)

To be fair, creating your own ringtones is also a non-casual thing to do. I have several custom ring tones, all made just with iTunes and a little simple file alteration. But not something a person who wasn't at least an enthusiastic tinkerer would be likely to do.

It's not an oversight, it's been gone since very early in the iOS 11 betas. Presumably it's because of the new multitasking gesture on the iPhone X that it was removed altogether, since the iPhone 10 won't need a shortcut like that.

I doubt we'll see it back, Apple wants you to buy their most expensive iPhone ever so they'll inconvenience you until you do.

True, but there's tons of sites people can download ringtones and there's ringtone apps that allow you to create your own.
But those options dont make Apple any money offcourse;)

I had a pop up on my MacBook after the iTunes update explaining the changes to me and providing me with the link for new instructions for transferring custom tones, I don't think they'd have done that if they were trying to sneakily trick people into buying ringtones. You do know nearly every iPhone user out there has that same damn default ringtone and couldn't care less don't you? You're talking about a very niche thing to do. Not everythings a conspiracy theory you know....

Edit: I've just given it a go using a custom tone maker on my MacBook. Dragged on dropped straight onto my phone. Less steps and even easier than the old method, took seconds. You can delete/manage them from iTunes that's separate from the content on your phone. Literally the only thing 'missing' is having a tab/library for your tones within iTunes. I think you're getting upset over nothing.

I guess I can still use the home button almost as easily to accomplish the same thing, but I still miss the old way.

That's pretty cool, I never had such help or warning thing on Windows 7 though :(
I guess I gotta purchase a Mac to get those new pop up guides:D
Glad you like the new feature.
How do you delete it because I found no way of doing it.
I can just drop them in but cannot take out.
