I agree with many that the device is usable with EDGE, but there was no reason not to include 3g. All 3g devices have EDGE and GSM capability as mentioned and there are plenty of ultra thin devices with 3g so Jobs using size as an argument seems weak. I believe it may have something to do with the broadcom/ qualcomm suit regarding 3g chips. One thing you rarely hear mentioned about 3g is the improved voice quality. It is much better than EDGE so I look forward to it because of that! That and the faster data.
Oh well this horse has been beaten to death.

I fully understand that 3G and EDGE work together. I am coming off an HTC TyTN. Listen at what I am saying... Apple is already dealing with people who are "upset" at some features and implementation. Now, lets say they advertise a new feature and tout the new faster data capabilities. Oops, sorry, 80% of the country cant use that feature. That is not good business.

This is also why I dont think you will see a 3G iPhone in under 6 months. For v2 of a product to be successful, you need many v1 people to "upgrade." Given the very high price, the 2 year contract AND the fact that a 3G upgrade would be useless to 50%-75% of all iPhone users. It is not a great situation for Apple.

There are also issue with chip size, heat and battery life that need to be worked out before v2 of the iPhone becomes a reality.

ash =o)

I've just read it. Thanks for the link.

I do hope that he is right on this one!

Sadly someone mislead him on how HSDPA/UTMS works. It is based on WCDMA (similar to CDMA that Verizon and Sprint uses). It also allows for simultaneous Voice and Data transmission. It isn't based on GSM or Edge at all.
