I've had my 3G for nearly a year and no scratches. I've had no screen protector on it. It's been carried in my pocket with keys, coins, and basically I've taken no care with it whatsoever.

I managed to put a scratch my iPhone 3GS screen within the first 3 days.

Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone done any scratch tests on the screen?

Yeah I got my 3GS on Friday and by Saturday I noticed a scratch right smack in the center of the screen! It was only about 1mm long but it was buging me so I took it to an apple store on monday and they replaced it with no questions asked! I did call apple first before making an apointment and they told me to just take it in for replacement! Awesome experience by apple!

I don't know actually, but same thing here, except for the 3GS part cause I haven't got one.

I've had my 3G since September and I have no scratches at all on the display. I've not used a case either.

I had a 3G from July until Friday. No case, no screen protector. No scratches. But I didn't put it in with keys and coins either. Not on purpose, at least.

I'm hoping the 3G S is the same, because I love using my iPhone naked. :p The oleophobic coated screen feels even better than the old one, and is just a joy to run my fingers over.

I never ever carried either phone in my pocket with keys/coins. I do think the coating is more prone to scratching and to that end, I've ordered the vaja ivolution GT case which has a flap on it.

Because oleophobic screen is just a coating, I think people need to realize that it can be scratched off. I'm probably babying this iPhone more then the 3G until the case arrives next month just of the coating.

Well ofcourse even my 3G didn't get a scratch for the past 1 year just like you guys. After hearing your experiences i have think again before i buy my 3G S.

The only thing that gave me pause was the oleophobic coating. Even now I wonder of the durability of the coating. While there are concerns, I have to say that it does a phenomenal job at cutting down on fingerprints and smudges.

I have no buyers remorse with getting the 3GS its a great phone and I think if you take care of it, i.e., protect the screen, at least until we get hard evidence of the durability of the coating, you'll be very pleased with the phone.

I haven't had any scratching on my screen, but I don't carry it in the same pocket as other things. I've noticed that the back has some tiny scuff like scratches already, but I never had a 3g so I'm assuming that was normal.

My guess would be the coating.

It's not the coating, there is no line of coating on the outside of the screen. This stuff is infused into the glass, it's not like they lined the outside of the glass in the stuff.

I feel like that's the definition of a 'coating'.

If it were infused into the glass they'd probably advertise it as 'oleophobic glass'.

Interesting post. I've never had a cover on my 1st gen iPhone but I have made sure it goes in my pocket without keys etc. and the screen is still fine.

My 4 day old 3GS, now I've looked, has got a few tiny scratches.

Glad I read this - I'm getting a protector!

But I'm also a bit peed off that I need one. They always make the screen look rubbish.

This is my first iPhone and I bought an inivisble shield but haven't put it on yet because I just love the way the screen feels. Has anyone used the invisible shield and how does it feel compared to the glass?

I've tried them all. Best one IMO is the Power Support Crystal film. (Apple Store or online at Power Support) Can't even tell it's on there. Feels just like the glass. Zero drag.

Odd that only one or two people are reporting problems with the 3GS' screen scratching. Anyone else?

None here. Don't put a screen protector on it either since my experience is that they invariably get scratched up much easier than the regular glass. But I don't throw it in pockets with coins and keys...it always gets its own pocket and the screen faces my leg in case I bump into something.

I keep it in an iSkin Solo case most of the time though, just because i find the iPhone casing too slippery.

I wouldn't know. I had 3g with a Zagg Invisible shield and I have my 3Gs with one too. :) I imagine the oleophobic screen coating is more prone to scratching.

That's fascinating, but I'd like to hear what people are actually experiencing, rather than what they simply "imagine" ... ;)

Put a screen protector on your phone and this thread wouldn't need to exist.
