Did you put the Zagg shield over the 3GS before playing with it at all? Can you give a comparison of the feeling between the two?

Honestly, I wanted the Zagg on my phone the second it was out of the box, so I had the Best Buy guy put it on when activating it. However, when I returned my 3g, I took off the Zagg, and played with the screen. There is a difference in feeling, but I like the Zagg more. Its more tactile.

Here is my best example. My friend who loves iPhones, was playing with my 3Gs at my apartment a few days ago. He loved the 3g, but wanted to play with my 3Gs. He remarked "did they change the screen? It feels so much nicer!" I responded saying that it had a screen protector on it. He was like "really? I couldn't tell."

Ok thanks, I appreciate it. I'll go ahead and put mine on tonight and if I don't like it the worst that happens is I take it off. Either way I paid for it so I might as well try it.

When I had the original iPhone i went with a sceen protector for like maybe six months. Then I took it off and let it breathe, and six months later I sold it.

No scratches or dings in the glass, minor wear and tear from usage on the aluminum.

Same with my iPhone 3G, and the same will go with my iPhone 3GS.

Granted I don't plop my phone into a pocket filled with keys and coins.

That's fascinating, but I'd like to hear what people are actually experiencing, rather than simply what they "imagine" ... ;)

Put a screen protector on your phone and this thread wouldn't need to exist.

Been there, done that (on multiple iPhones and iPod touches since 2007), but this is the first one with an oleophobic coating. Hence the question.

I'm hoping the 3G S is the same, because I love using my iPhone naked. :p The oleophobic coated screen feels even better than the old one, and is just a joy to run my fingers over.
OK, EWWWW! It sounds like you are texting people in the buff while covered in some sort of vegetable spread... OK, skipping breakfast.

I can't speak about the 3G, but the 3GS scratches more easily than then 2G. I carried my 2G in my pocket for two years with minimal damage to the screen (the back is another story). However after my first weekend the 3GS has already two notable scratches. What really bugs me is that I went to buy a screen protector and apple care on Saturday from an Apple store, and they weren't letting people in. You had to wait in for 25 minutes to get into the store. What a bunch of S*%# that is.
Spidesol, how did you get yours replaced?

I put my Zagg on 3 days after getting my phone, and to be honest, I can barely tell the difference when touching it. I can tell a little bit of a difference when sliding my fingernail on it, because it's somewhat rubbery, but the texture is really smooth and you can't really tell it's there. I actually forgot I had it on yesterday

i'm definitely putting a protector on mine just so i have a little peace of mind if i forget something is in my pocket with my phone. if the protector gets scratched, who cares? i'll just take it off and slap a new one on. thats what they're there for.

Yeah and the oil-resistant coating you're trying to protect wouldn't need to exist either genius...

I've had both of the previous phones from release date and never seen a scratch or used/fiddled with/spent money on a "screen protector" because they frankly didn't need it - period.

Screen protectors are just a bit cooler than pocket protectors...

Oil resistant my rear end. The back of my phone is "oil resistant" as well. Why are there so many fingerprints all over it? Hmm. I guess since I'm a "genius" I'll go ahead and venture its because we were spoon fed a load of BS. Fingerprints are just as noticable.

The back of your phone is not advertised to have the same coating as the front so how the back of your phone retaining oil has any relevance to this conversation is a logical leap I'll leave to you - "genius".

Just to be clear - the point of the coating isn't to reduce the appearance of fingerprints/face oil - it's still going to happen. The difference is that you don't have to "breathe" on the screen to get a little fog or use iClear or something to clean it - it just wipes off with a dry cloth.

I can directly compare my 3G phone and 3GS phone and see that the 3GS is more resistant to fingerprints.

Additionally it wipes clean with a swipe on my jeans or shirt, whereas the 3G requires using a little bit of moisture or a very mild solvent to clean up the residue on it.

But go on believing that you must film encrust your iPhone if that is what makes you happy.

I really don't see how hard it is to keep the iPhone in a pocket free of other items or in a pocket of a bag, etc, that doesn't have things to rub up against it.

Do you throw your laptop in a bag with loose keys, coins, etc, and get upset when the casing gets beat to hell?

The point is that I carried my 3G around in my pocket with keys and coins for the last year and no scratches.

The 3GS has scratched in days. I was asking if anyone else had the same experience to see if it was necessary to change my behavior or buy a screen protector. It certainly wasn't necessary with the 2G or 3G.

If you do a search of 3G scratch threads you will see that plenty of people reported scratching with their 2G and 3G under similar circumstances.

I don't think the coating has anything to do with it. Plastic scratches, and glass can scratch if it comes into contact with dust, sand or other abrasives and gets rubbed.

The coating might play some minor roll in things but honestly, people who let their iPhone bang around in their pocket or purse with random junk are simply asking for things like this to happen to them.

Yep, I got a scratch already on the bottom right part of the screen. Welp, time to invest in Bodyguardz

I have the yellowing screen crap too so it'll (hopefully) get replaced.

My 3GS was naked for three days before I found the case I wanted. In that time, I babied it, and I still found two small scratches on the screen yesterday when I was putting it in a case. The scratches are hairline, maybe a cm long each and both next to the home button. No big deal, but it is a bummer.

I've never had my iPhone screen scratch prior to the 3GS

Having a screen protector covering the oleophobic screen is a shame and makes keeping my phone's screen clean a bit harder, but it looks like leaving the screen coating exposed leads to scratches...

I'm having a similar experience as many of you here -- had the 2G for almost 2 years. I kept it naked but avoided the pocket with my keys and change and while the back was beat to hell the screen was perfectly clean. I just noticed on my new 3G S that there are a couple of decent scratches. One is almost an inch long and I'm sure they'll become less noticeable over time it's quite aggravating right now, especially coming from the bulletproof 2G.

Any chance this is covered under Apple Care? Someone said they got their phone replaced.

Never hurts to buy a screen protect and put it on...learn this from watching my co-workers....but to be honest...the only screen on any cellphone that I've owned...that never got scratches was Nokia 8800....

Though it doesn't do half the thing iphone can do....it was a very beautiful built phone.....feature wise i enjoy the iphone a lot....

2G - Power Support Crystal Film. The BEST protector IMO.

3G - naked. Despite it rarely leaving the house, freekishly careful with putting it in a special soft pocket in my purse, putting it in my rear pocket with nothing in there and even taking care not to rub the bezel against the inside pocket seams - the damn glass has 2 tiny hairline scratches. Maybe from falling on the floor of my car, maybe - who knows. But it DID scratch.
I have to put this in my Ebay Ad!!! I might lose money.

3GS - I just ran to Apple to get the Power Support Crystal Film. I have other films here and none of them can touch it. Same as the glass IMO. Silk.
The film will go on and stay there - just in case.

I'm looking at the film on my 2G right now and can't even tell it's there visibly or by feel. It's only $14.99 for 2 - so why not. BUT the glass does scratch even with great care and I never thought I'd say that.

I've tried them all. Best one IMO is the Power Support Crystal film. (Apple Store or online at Power Support) Can't even tell it's on there. Feels just like the glass. Zero drag.

I didn't want to leave the store without a case for the back. I looked for the lowest profile clear one I could find. I happen to get the power support air jacket with the screen protector. No one can even tell it's on there (other 3GS users) and the low profile case is really nice for blocking the scratches on the back. I am very happy with my blind pick. I had a Zagg shield on my Pre and it was nice but you could tell it was there.

yeah, its the PS Crystal for me. i want my screen safer under it and perfect as it is right now. i don't care about fingerprints, just scratches which i am absolutely sure i will get as my friend's new phones already have small hairlines that would piss the f**k outta me if i had them.

I'll chime in since I've had multiple iphones replaced. When the 3g first came out their screens were pretty good at being scratch resistant. When apple had replaced my glass and screen under warranty. the new glass was easily scratched. Within a week I had a two deep scratches. Lesson learned always but on a screen protector.
