I have a scratch in the black section underneath the glass. It started small but its about half an inch now. Its almost like the black section is peeling away frm the glass. Very strange!!

I think I have the same thing going on my 3GS at the left of my home button. I have no idea how I got this scratch either.

My 2G and 3G glass never scratched. I am doing nothing different and the 3GS is scratched in weeks. Something is wrong.

I don't mind the location of this scratch but if it was on the display area I would be pissed. Apple has some things to work out with this model.

My 3GS has a scratch too

I actually sought advice from the "geniuses" at the genius bar about putting the invisible shield on the front, and the guy said the new screens are as scratch resistant as the old ones, and covering the screen defeats the purpose of it being oil resistant. Okay, so my fault for listening to the ******* because now I have a small, less than 1mm scratch on my screen to show for it. No I don't keep it in my pocket with car keys, coins, diamonds, thumb tacks, or any of that nonsense. The Apple store would not replace the phone, or the screen. I pointed out to them that I had a 2G for over 2 years, and I never covered it, and it never scratched. I was then told a litany of useless nonsense:

"They're scratch resistant, not scratch proof. It's like a car, with a 5 star crash rating, if you wreck it, it can still crash."

"Dude, only like, a diamond can scratch the screen, like keys and coins won't scratch it"

"I have scratches on my 3G..yeah I dropped it and dragged it on the concrete, dude, don't feel bad. The phone still works."

"Yeah, like the oleophobic screens are less scratch resistant but that's only on the 3GS."

Imbeciles....anyway, they wouldn't replace it.

Maybe next time you should use some common sense along with other people's advice. I notice that I usually have better results if I use my own common sense and do my own research rather relying on other people to make decisions for me. You've got a scratch under 1mm. Yeah, it sucks, but it's really not that big of a deal and you don't deserve to be given a free phone for something that is your fault. You should be thankful that Apple didn't replace your phone for free because if they always did for user negligence then your phone would have cost 3 times the price you paid for it.

Same Deal

I've had the 3GS for one week today. I've babied the thing since I got it.

I'm using the iPhone before I go to bed and everything looks good last night. I wake up this morning and mysteriously a hairline scratch/crack shows up. I'm not sure how it got there.

I was thinking that maybe I should have got a screen protecter as soon as I purchased it. But then I realized that I couldn't have done anything to it, especially with Apple's resilient screen and all, so it must have been a defect.

So I'm thinking that even if I had got the protection the scratch/crack would have still showed up. Though I'm not completely positive but it seems very unlikely that I would have damaged it so soon and especially in my sleep.

The point is it's not my fault there is a scratch on the screen which is why I think it's DEFECTIVE. The scratch just showed up. And it is a big deal you jerk because it bothers me, and I didn't do anything to put it there. Furthermore, I've read on this forum some people have had luck with either getting their 3GS's replaced, or getting their screens replaced for free at the Apple store for having scratches that just magically appear (AS IN MY CASE), so it was worth a try. You don't think the cost of the phone is going to go up when enough 3GS owners have this same problem and there's another class action suit against Apple? Despite your ignorant opinion, if I'm weary of putting the Invisible shield on the oleophobic screen because I'm concerned about them spraying mist directly onto my advice, and I ask someone at the Apple store and they confirm my opinion that it's best not to cover the magical oleophobic screen and they tell me the screen is the same material as the 2G and 3G and therefore equally as durable, common sense to me would point me towards taking their advice and not covering the phone. This thread concerns cracks appearing in the oleopohobic screen and discusses whether it could actually be the coating that is causing the problem, it's not about you posting your woes about possibly having to subsidize a replacement phone for my defective device.

Did the phone come with the scratch? No? Then it is not defective. Apple shouldn't be replacing phones or screens for people who choose to leave the phone naked. That falls under hazards of regular use which the warranty does not cover.

You did nothing to cause the scratch...yeah nothing intentional...accidental yes...you, someone near you, or something near you caused the scratch...they do not appear out of thin air.

Why should they treat you any different from someone who dropped their phone on the ground and had the screen crack? Both are accidental damage...yet they charge those people for the replacement of the screen. They should be doing the same for people who complain about small scratches that "appeared magically" since they bought it.

I do think the new screen is more prone to scratching. My original 3GS got a small scratch on it that I noticed within 24 hours of me getting it (it was flawless when I got it). I noticed it just before getting the LCD swapped out due to an uneven warm screen. Replacing it got rid of the scratch. I have since had the phone replaced due to a GPS issue. Just before putting on a Crystal Film tonight I noticed a hairline scratch...not enough to really bother me though as I could only see it barely and only at certain angles.

I delayed putting on the screen protector because I wanted to make sure my GPS issue was resolved.

I always put a screen protector on mine...along with a skin for the back (to protect the back from the case) and a case. I do that so I don't have to worry about what I put in my pocket with my phone. That said, I don't put anything more than just paper (like receipts) in the same pocket.

This is sad.

What was Apple thinking? What a FAIL! I do want a "less-smudge" screen, but not with the cost of strenght of the screen.

Apple should have thought of this, what a FAIL. I do want a "less-smudge" screen, but not the cost of strenght of the screen.

Yeah, it was something I debated up until I got my 3GS...should I put a screen protector or shouldn't I? I chose to take the cautious route and apply a screen protector. Since I've been dealing with a smudgy screen for a year now (been using a crystal film on my 3G) I really don't mind it. In fact...I prefer the texture of the crystal film to the new screen...the new screen is almost too slick.

Thank you for this response. So speaking of defects, if I'm reading this post correctly, you had first YOUR LCD REPLACED, AND THEN THE ENTIRE UNIT REPLACED! And you're asking ME, "Who are you to expect a replacement phone?" Let me toss the same condescending questions on you:

Did your phone COME with an irregularly warming screen? Maybe while you were activating it, someone came by and poured water on it accidentally? Maybe your palms were extra sweaty that day, and because of that, the phone shorted out? Maybe you walked by a gigantic speaker magnet and it shorted out your GPS. This was BEFORE you applied the back case and the crystal screen right? Man, you get a scratch on your 3GS not 24 hours after you left the store and this doesn't strike you as odd? Of course you can nobly man up and say it was your fault the scratch was there and talk down to my post, because you don't have to worry about anything because you got your LCD and eventually the whole phone replaced! I had a 2G for over 2 years, and I never got a single freaking scratch on the glass. I know how I handle my electronics man, don't presume I take any less care of my phone then you do of yours. I don't put it in the same pocket as anything else at all, I have the invisible shield installed on the back for protection, and I took a risk, since I was told by the Genius Bar, as well as on the phone by Apple Tech Support, that the 3GS screen is "the same material and is as durable as the 2G or 3G", AND I was advised that a front screen would interfere and possibly damage the oleophobic coating, that the phone would be good without a front screen.

In any case, let's just say I was negligent in not covering the front. My point is, WHY WOULD APPLE TOUT THE GREATNESS OF THE NEW OLEOPHOBIC SCREEN IF THEY JUST EXPECTED YOU TO COVER IT WITH A GODDARN PROTECTOR?

My original post is getting misconstrued. I'm not angry I didn't get a replacement phone, I'm angry because I had three retards at the genius bar tell me asinine reasons for there being a scratch in my phone (and I'm angry there is already an unexplained scratch on my 3GS). When an Apple employee tells me, "Only like, a diamond can scratch this screen", and another chimes in, "It's like a car with a 5 star crash test rating, if you crash it, it can still crash," I get a little irritated with my Apple experience. I want to reiterate, other people have reported they have gotten scratches and have had luck with the Apple store replacing their phones. I am just as entitled to a replacement for scratches in a defective 3GS LCD as they are so I tried to get it replaced. Stop judging, you had your LCD replaced and ultimately the entire unit replaced.

Have you seen those Youtube videos of 2G iPhones being sealed in a ziplock bag with keys and nails and screws and shaken up and there isn't a single mark on the screen? The point is, if the 3GS is as durable as the 2G or 3G, and I haven't shaken my 3GS in any bags full of keys or nails or screws, and there is a tiny scratch on my phone, where did it come from unless it's defective? Or why can't Apple just fess up that the oleophobic screen was a mistake and is prone to scratching?

Uneven warm screen, busted magnetron or GPS or whatever, AND a hairline crack in your oleophobic screen? Man at least I'm not as unlucky as you. Notice I called you "unlucky", not negligent. Hopefully nothing tragic happens to your REPLACEMENT.

I wanna see 3GS scratch tests in Youtube! But I bet no one has the balls to do it with the oleophobic screen. :p

I can´t believe that the 3G is a more robust product than the 3GS!!!!!

Shouldn´t the new model upgrades always be better than the previous models? At least my logic tells me that. I can´t believe this from Apple, where was their brain?

The other day I was at an Apple Store with my sister. While she was getting her new iphone activated, I got bored and decided to do a little screen scratch test of my own on one of the hundreds of display iphones they have there. I scratched a key across the screen for a good 30 seconds as hard as I could and it didn't leave a single mark.

A minute later, I was playing with one of the macbooks and noticed the iphone that was connected to it had a 1/2 inch scratch across the screen....

Anyways, I don't have a screen protector on mine, nor do I have a case on other then when I'm using my Morphie Air, and I don't have a scratch on the screen or the back.

In my opinion, people who keep complaining about scratches on the the screens of their iPhones really must learn how to look after their possessions!

As has already been said, glass is one of nature's hardest materials - pretty well next to diamond - to all intents and purposes, is pretty well impervious to scratching. How many people have scratches all over their windows or car windshields?

As far as the oleophobic coating is concerned, surely there's nothing revolutionary in this? This and other coatings have been used in optical glass applications for years (i.e. spectacles and cameras) and is not just a simple "coating" that can rub off because it is fused onto the surface of the glass and effectively becomes part of it.

Just put a ****ing screen protector on and stop complaining. Seriously you guys are now saying that the scratches appear out of nowhere and they would appear even with a screen shield on?

People on this forum are insane at times.

This is exactly why the first thing I did was put a bodyguardz on the 3GS...

Hairline cracks are generally a defect, scratching of the screen? Not so much...

NO the scratches are from 2 things; 1) the coating settling after use, a screen protector will NOT HELP THIS.
and the scratches are also from normal use wear the coating actually gets scratched making the screen appear scratched. Examples: This can come from the screen being nix'd by your finger nail or sliding the phone in and out of your jeans pocket where the denim scratches the oleophobic coating! Those are just two examples , apple screwed up with this coating!

Yes, this is a good point. But the Topic is whether or not the 3GS scratches easier than the 3G, presumably due to the oleophobic screen. It's not about "us people taking better care of our possessions!" So do you have a 3GS, and if so, do you think it scratches easier than the 3G?

Also, that was a clever point about cameras and spectacles with oleophobic coatings--but you should note, this is not an apples to apples comparison because cameras and spectacles were not designed to have their oleophobic glass parts run over them constantly by people's fingers in order to operate them the way that iphones are. And you don't put your spectacles or your camera in your pocket like you do with your iphone...should we wear our iphones on our head or strap them around our necks like a camera to avoid scratches? I'm sure if you've worn spectacles, you've scratched them...maybe you should put a screen protector over your glasses?

As for glass being impervious to scratches, thank you for proving my point. If there is nothing wrong or defective with my 3GS glass, and glass is impervious, then why is there a freaking scratch on it? If it's "impervious to scratches" then why should I have to cover it with a film of protective plastic?

I can't speak for other people, but I owned both the 3G and original iPhone naked without a screen protector, but in an "open" case so the screen was exposed, and never scratched it, despite them being in my pocket all day. I've had my 3GS since launch day the same way, in my pocket, and no scratches thus far either. Just gave it a thorough look over.

wouldn't a screen protector pretty much eliminate the purpose of the oleophobic screen?

The screen protector will have a billion times more smudges.

So do you have a 3GS, and if so, do you think it scratches easier than the 3G?
I have a 3GS and my cousin has an original 3G - neither have scratches.
spectacles were not designed to have their oleophobic glass parts run over them constantly by people's fingers in order to operate them the way that iphones are.
I would have thought regular "polishing" spectacle lenses could be pretty destructive!
I'm sure if you've worn spectacles, you've scratched them..
I do ..... and I haven't!

As I originally said, it all comes down to how people look after their possessions. I wonder why everyone doesn't suffer from scratches on their screens! ;)

Very responsible.

It certainly wasn't irresponsible of me. I was simply testing out a demo of their product. Apple claims (or at least the Apple employee who sold me my iphone) that their phone screen is scratch resistant. I was simply testing the validity of their claims.

It's intentionally attempting to damage someone else's property. Spin it how you like.

Mini Coopers come with run-flat tires, but that doesn't mean you're within your rights to go spiking nails into all the cars on the lot.

Well, that's quite a dramatic example. But I do think that if someone is selling me and a loved one a product and makes a claim concerning an important feature it has than I am totally justified in testing out said sales pitch on a voluntarily displayed DEMO of this product.

If they are uncomfortable with costumers testing their products then they shouldn't put out dozens of unsupervised test models of it, or they should ask costumers to not actually test the product for claimed features or they should just not claim that it has that feature.
