I did see the reviews on that shop. Overall, there were a lot of five star reviews though. I figure it's worth a small gamble to save $150-$200. If they become a headache, you gotta love AMEX buyer protection benefits.
Cool, I think I will give them a try, seems they are also an authorized LG retailer.

So far this vendor is not great, videoandaudiocenter.com I've emailed them and called them regarding when my order will ship. I've received no call back or response to my email. Granted, it's 2 days after I placed the order, but I can't remember the last time that anything I ordered online after 2 days hadn't shipped (removing pre-order or backordered items obviously.) Time to start looking for alternatives, and I think if I don't get any update tomorrow then I'll just cancel the order.

I finally got the shipped notification. It looks like 2 days is how long it normally takes them.

Glad I found this thread. I'm also looking for a 4K / 60htz display and searching for the adapters and cables is confusing.

So I'm either going to buy the dell 2715q or the LG27ud88 for my 15 inch MacBook Pro.

If I buy the Dell monitor, will the displayport to USB C adapter sold by Dell be enough? Am I correct in assuming that displayport doesn't transfer data so I'll need to plug the monitor in a USB C to USB A adapter as well?

Yup, that is how I understand it. In this sense, it's a cheap option, the hub is already present in the monitor.

By the way, here is a high-res picture of its connections:

As far as I'm able to see, you'll need:
- USB-C to DisplayPort cable
- USB-C to USB 3.x Type B, like this one

I have this display now. Does anyone know if it can power the 87W MacBook Pro 15inch? It can power the 12 and 13 inch fine right now (returning the 13 inch as soon as I get the 15)
Unknown since no one has the 15" yet.

Can you tell us some more about your experience with this monitor and the 13"?

Does it charge right away when your plug it in? Does it charge if the screen is off or in standby?

Any other annoyances?

Is there a way to control the brightness right from your mac? Perhaps even the brightness buttons on the keyboard?

Yes. So it does charge right away even if the computer is on standby (turned off monitor too). Experiences are really good! Love the monitor it worked well with my 2012 pro. There is an application you download from LG that allows you to control the brightness but not with the keys. I never change the brightness of the display often anyway. Great for the 13 inch it was like it was designed for it, I hope the 15 is just as good with power output! The USB 3 HUB is an excellent addition as well.

What resolution mode are you guys using your 4k 27" monitors with? I'm temped to drop the extra $1000 to get the 5k LG just so I can run at 1440 HiDPI (that and the USB hub are cool but it's hard to justify that plastic housing).

4K! So far it doesn't look weird for me at all. I also love the fact that my Xbox One S can play 4K without worrying about 5k distorting the image

Wow awesome. Just to clarify once more:

Even if the monitor is off or goes into standby it still continues to charge the MBP?

For example, let's say I leave and after 15min the laptop turns of the screen, the monitor loses video connection and goes into standby.

Does it continue to power the MBP?

And when you get back and press a key, does it wake up the display from sleep?

So, if I closed the laptop lid with the USB C connected, the laptop would remain on and the display becomes the primary monitor (if it wasn't already). Then, if you click sleep with the mouse on the laptop, the monitor will enter stand by (off, but charging) and the computer keeps charging. IF you turn the display off along with closing the laptop lid, then no charging occurs.

This is awesome. Exactly how I would expect it.

[doublepost=1478241983][/doublepost]Actually one more question @nikster0029.

Could you please take measurements of the box? I am going to have to take it on the plane if I buy it and need to know if I can take it as a carry on or check it.

I would highly appreciate it.

Consider that the LG has a built-in hub and power supply, worth about $100-$150 over any other 4K monitor. For me, I'm gonna upgrade to the LG from the Dell P2715Q 4K monitor given that the LGa has a hub and power supply for my MacBook.

From the power specs, it's supposed to deliver up to 85 W, so I assume that would be nearly enough for the 15 inch MacBook Pro.

What box? I don't own the box for the display anymore unfortunately but you can find those dimensions online (probably, but I bet you already looked)

I have the 13" rMBP 2015 and I just need 4K resolution. I don't care about power supply so do I need the LG or the Dell?

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two:
https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/compare/426931;658473/

They're really different monitors. They're both what we call 4K, however the Dell is 27" and the LG is 21". If you don't care about the power supply, I'd say pick based on your eyesight and how far you place it away.

I'll go for the 27".
