Now you can...

I own a Sony 4K TV that has an HDMI 2.0 input. But as far as I know, there is NOTHING that officially provides an HDMI 2.0 source right now. And I know for sure that nothing I have will output HDMI 2.0 at this time:
  • 2013 Retina MacBook Pro (4K 30hz only)
  • New Mac Pro (ordered but not yet received; 4K 30hz only)
  • Gaming PC with Radeon R9 290X (4K 30hz only)
  • Sony PS4 (only 1080p enabled but supposedly supports 4K)

My TV just needed a firmware update to support HDMI 2.0 so hopefully some of these can be updated to support HDMI 2.0. I have heard that the R9 290X hardware does support HDMI 2.0 and just needs a firmware update. Haven't heard if this is possible on the Macs.

You probably already know this, but with Mavericks 10.9.3, your 2013 Macbook Pro can output 4K at 60Hz using MST over Displayport 1.2.

From Tb(2)/mDP(1.2) to HDMI(2.0) - Converter (4k@60Hz).

...Then you are out of luck. There is currently no way to drive a hdmi2.0 screen from a nMP. You would need an active converter and there are none available yet.

Here we are, over a year later. But I still don't see any solutions available. Apart from some suggestions of upcoming hardware. - Odd.

There are a bunch more UHD/TVs now, and many of them have HDMI(2.0) inputs, but no DisplayPort. However, there's till no way to run those screens (4k@60Hz) from any Mac.

Some (announced, future) Seiki Pro models may push this. But that's just one, rather limited, option.

It is strange that none have shipped yet. Basically these adapters are a cable with a converter chip in them, so it all depends on the availability of the chip. The cable manufacturers like Accell for the most part just put these into casings. On forums, people have said that ParadeTech is coming out with a chip and there's another company called EPMI that has announced a chip. I'd be surprised if these are being held up due to low demand, I suspect it's the opposite, which is that some large manufacturer bought up all the inventory. Google is apparently using a DP to HDMI 2.0 chip in their USB-C to HDMI adapter for the Chromebook Pixel, so it's possible that either they or Apple are buying all the available supply and that's why there aren't any third party cables.

At the moment, only the GTX 980, 970 and 960 have true to spec HDMI 2.0 output. So that's probably a large limiting factor right there. Probably another year or so.

BizLink Converter?

maybe this adapter from BizLink shown at CES will see the light of day sometime in the future (article in french): http://www.hardware.fr/news/14040/ces-adaptateur-displayport-1-2-hdmi-2-0.html

"Tucked away in a consortium VESA stand-area dedicated to DisplayPort, we saw a prototype adapter that converts the signal DisplayPort(1.2) to HDMI(2.0). Offered by BizLink, who was also the first with a DisplayPort hub, it is an active adapter cable - but it does not require external power."

BizLink Site (is not clear on this product).

So, it looks like this connector/converter cable availablity is still up in the air. Thou the next round of Mac upgrades (WWDC/2015)? should feature some significant GPU bumps that may support HDMI(2.0) too.

FWIW, BizLink is the parent company of Accell, so we'll probably see that adapter released under the Accell name, at least in the US.

Thanks edanuff.
Checked Accell, and this seems to be the closest conector/converter cable that they have available presently.

Some of the tech blogs claim a release in 2015/Q2.

So why did Apple use ATI chips in the MP6,1?

Somebody failed at due diligence when researching suppliers.

Thanks for this. It looks like the "CAC-1170" from Club-3d in the Netherlands is being offered for ~$30 on Amazon/Us. But t's currently out of stock, with no user reviews so far. Hope it works as advertised.

this adapter is brand new, it was released one or two weeks ago. so it's not yet in stock but it should be available soon.
according to the product sheet http://club-3d.com/isotope/c/cac-1170_en-950b0185.pdf
it should work with any graphics card...

I have a Panasonic AX800 series 4k TV which I've chosen mainly because it had both HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 (and a low latency) which I thought would allow me to use it on my mac at 60Hz. I wasn't aware at that time of the Single vs Multi-Stream-Transport issue. It uses MST to achieve 60Hz on DisplayPort which is a no go on OSX except on very specific hardware combinations (one would have better chance with a nMP but I wouldn't vouch for it). Unfortunately there are very few TVs offering DisplayPort connectivity and I think no TV manufacturer bothers to precise if it uses SST or MST in the specs. However it works great on windows on both HDMI and DisplayPort (more reliably on HDMI though).

I can't wait for HDMI 2.0 support to come in OSX but I guess that won't happen at least before Apple releases a new Mac Pro, and even then it might be restricted for use with the new machines (not on all HDMI 2 capable macs such as upgraded cMPs).

I'd also be curious about these active adapters, their capabilities (UHD@60Hz on SST ?) and tradeoffs (compatibility, power consumption, latency, ease of use), but I wouldn't rely on it until it has been proven to work flawlessly between a mac and any other type of HDMI 2.0 screen.

For now if you want to have UHD@60Hz on your mac today, the only proven and reliable way is to buy a computer monitor with SST DisplayPort (or use Windows but I'm not sure this could be qualified as reliable).

Solved: 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 on Mac Pro 5,1 2010

I have the following set-up:
Mac Pro (Early 2009 upgraded with 5,1 mid 2010 firmware) Mac OS 10.10.5 with GTX 980 graphics (standard PC-version) -> DisplayPort -> Club 3D CAC-1070 adapter -> HDMI 2/DVI input -> Samsung UE48JS9005 (Curved Euroversion with quantum dot LCD screen)

After switching the TV control HDMI UHD Color to On I am getting full 4K 60Hz 4:4:4

I am very satisfied with the total result and for once a curved TV is positive. The dot pitch of this screen is about the same as my previous 30-inch Apple Cinema Display but has much bigger workspace and better picture quality. The TV is a bit on the expensive side but still worth the money.

(Future potential would be to custom adapt desk and work area and use 2 or 3 of these screens in a continous arc. This kind of work space would be quite interesting if you have the need for it…)

THat's a pretty good news, thanks for trying.

hdmi2.0 for everyone on osx, just need to have dp1.2 working.

I just bought a Mini DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 Adapter CAC-1170. My setup consists of: a Late 2013 Macbook Pro 15" capable of outputting 4k@60hz through DP1.2 port & LG 55" UHD TV capable of getting 4k@60hz through hdmi 2.0 (it's written on the actual hdmi port) & HDMI 2.0 cable capable of 4k@60hz. However the maximum I get is 4k@30hz, what can I do ? I'm starting to lose my mind :(

I am not sure about the CAC-1170 because I got my HDMI adapter from uptab.com but should be same setup. I was having the same issue and contacted their support and this what helped me.

  1. First I downloaded (and purchased) SwitchResX, but you can download a trial that works for 10 days.

  2. In El Capitan there is a new security feature called SIP "System Integrity Protection". Unfortunately this prevents SwitchResX from modifying the system files that contain resolution information. But you can temporarily disable "System Integrity Protection" to make changes. Once the resolution has been created and activated, you can turn SIP on again.

  3. Disabling SIP requires booting into the recovery partition. You boot in recovery mode by pressing CMD + R when starting up your Mac.

  4. Then open a Terminal window. Utilities->Terminal and type the command below: csrutil disable

  5. To re-enable SIP once the changes have been made; boot back into the recovery partition and set state to enabled: csrutil enable

  6. Now boot to El Capitan and open SwitchResX. Select the TV from the pane on the left. Then select "Custom Resolution". I entered 3840 x 2160 and made sure that the Scan Rate for Vertical was set to 60 hz. Scaling is also possible.

  7. Save the changes (by hitting apply, and rebooting your mac.. it will ask you to save). After the reboot you will see the custom resolution added within SwitchResX under "Current Resolutions" for your TV.

Thanks for you very much for your reply.
That's exactly what I've done but the TV screen goes pink / green, the colours are messed up :(

What computer and what display do you have if you don't mind me asking?

LG uf770V 55"
[doublepost=1462038022][/doublepost]This is how the screen looks like when it runs 4k@60hz.

Many TV manufacturers (Sony, Visio, LG, Samsun) are labeling their HDMI ports as 4k at 60Hz which are NOT HDMI 2.0 capable, actually it is HDMI 1.4 :( They will display 4k at 60Hz but with color scheme 4:2:0. not 4:4:4 as HDMI 2.0.

Can you try to change the color scheme to 4:2:0 with SwitchResX???
