no man, the darkside is M$soft Window$, thought the OP mentionned he might be buying a PC laptop :(

Im with you on this one. Im not a big return type person. Infact I think that people who return things for insignificant things need their heads examined. Usually they bought something they regretted and then have to tax the system by returning their unwanted used item. Wheres the justice? I want to see a perfect macpro too but to nit pick through 4 $2k laptops its past the point of redicilous. Good luck with another brand! I feel sorry for them!

i don't agree with that. if i'm spending +$2000.00 on a computer, i should expect a computer that doesn't need something replaced as soon as i open the box, but hey, that's just me.

What difference does cost make? Any new computer shouldn't have anything wrong with it out of the box. But people aren't perfect, and either are computers. It's a fact of life some people just can't accept for some reason.

dead right , if Apple had to quality control the laptop to the level people here are asking for, i bet the price will be 10x !!

I really can't understand this. You buy a loaf of bread that had green mould on it, you return it. You buy a car with a door that doesn't shut properly, you either return it or have it fixed. You buy a computer with a 1/3 yellow-tinted display, you return it. There is NO excuse that anybody should have to go through 3-4systems before they get one without defects. Also, the fact that Apple allows this shows that it's part of the larger calculation! The KNOW that most customers will be like you, i.e. not return their computers, and therefore it's cheaper to spend their quality control resources on the few that do than on all the customers who don't mind inferior/defective products.

So, how many cars ahev your returned before you got one you deemed perfect?

Are you a microbiologist or something?

no, it's not just you. you're 100% right. I felt the same way when I had 4 defective iMacs before getting an okay one.

YOu could go into best buy and get a laptop for 500$. INstead, you chose apple for the quality they were offering you. At 4 x the price, you should get a flawless machine. If it's something you noticed and you don't think it's right, then it's not. If I were you I would return it til you get a perfect one. I didn't have the strength to do that for my iMac so I took one that hummed when the brightness was dimmed.

OK, I'm confused. Why did you ask for a completely new one? Why didn't you just ask for them to fix your return key? You were EXTREMELY LUCKY they gave you a SR. In all my experience with Apple they don't just give you a new computer for something so easily fixed, they FIX it.

When I just got my new MBP SR I had looked at them in the Apple Store beforehand and had noticed that a few had the odd "3mm" difference in the way they closed and it looked uneven. But, I had decided before even going to the store that I would open it, turn it on, look for obvious defects, and then leave. If anything was wrong, I would still be at the Apple Store to show them my immediate discovery. I bought it, opened it, noticed no physical defects, saw a slightly yellow tint when viewing at angles, calibrated the display, fixed the problem, and went home.

I think you should ask Apple to do what they normally do and fix your old one before demanding a new one.

As the OP with the problems, out of interest (and since a similar question was deleted from the Apple Discussion forum - along with the entire thread about my problems - censorship eh?), can I ask my fellow Mac users - what make of pc notebook would you get if you were not going to get an Apple - and why?

What kind PC Notebook? I have always been extremely happy with HP computers. I currently have two one of which I purchased a week before Christmas. It has XP, preinstalled 2GIG ram, 120 GIG HD and a 15" Glossy Screen, DVD+-/CD burner. I paid just over $1100 for it.

I also have a two year old HP, a ZD8000 17". This thing only came with an 80GIG GD and XP with 512MB ram. Last month I finally upgraded the ram to 2GIGs! The thing is awesome and has a 3GHZ Intel. Only problem I had in the two years was the power brick failed, I ordered a new one on Newegg and had it two days later. I paid just over $1600 for it.

Now I also bought a MBP two days ago and am very happy with that, none of the issues I am reading about on this forum. I purchased it at BestBuy. I haven't gotten the AppleCare yet, I have time to do that later.

I wasn't "extremely lucky". Apple, like many others, has a policy of allowing an upgrade if one comes out within 14 days of your purchase. The fact that one did come out, together with the fact that my return key was sticking, meant that when I contacted Apple they said they'd replace it.

Because you shouldn't need anything FIXING on a brand new laptop. No wonder Apple has **** quality control, people like you just accept it.

Exactly! $2000+ purchase better be perfect. Everytime I bought a new car, the cars always had a few chips out of the paint. They never had a problem with me bringing the car back to have them fixed, it is expected actually. I even bought a new Camaro back in the 90s and it had some of that ugly blue plastic that new cars come coated with to protect the paint. Some of that was left on when I drove out with the car. A week later, I took the car back and they used some solvent on it and for some reason, he took out a buffer and left ugly marks on the trunk. Being very upset, the dealer manager asked me what I wanted done, I said I wanted the car replaced, two days later it was. Though that car was nearly $20,000 and the MBP is $2000+ there is no differance. A product should be perfect in appearance and performance when we pay money.

Same with those people paying $600 for the iPhone. Not happy with it's performace, get an exchange or refund, it's that simple, it's our money and we all work too hard for it.

I wouldn't buy a PC notebook, especially now because Vista comes standard. But, if I ever was forced to have a PC laptop, I would get a Vaio.

I'm not gonna get a PC - I can't face it. I'll wait a month or so and reorder a MBP, and hope for the best.

Vaios are pretty, usually, and you can get the small ones so they are nice yes. However the parts are usually junk and no where near as durable as many other laptops. If you are going to buy junk (a windows laptop) it might as well be cheap. Dude get yourself a dell.

i returned my pre SR 2.0 core duo cause i awas having all types off issues, i got my 2.33 in and havnt had one problem with it, even though today my battery isnt wanting to recognize

How do you arrive at the conclusion that Apple has ***** quality control? Have you looked at the statistics of customer satisfaction of Apple compared to other manufacturers?

Because atm, Apple has really bad quality control.

Simple as that.

When multiple people have to return computers multiple times for the same problems, there is definitely a problem.

It seems like the problems have increased since the statistics were updated, probably due to higher demand of Apple computers. I'm sure soon the wrinkles will be worked out, but right now, Macs are gaining much popularity, and it seems like Apple hasn't adapted.

I got my 4th MBP today and so far it seems fine, apart from the display flickering on less than max brightness. I first noticed this against a plain dark background but while I've been using the machine this evening it's hardly noticeable. Gonna leave the battery to drain tonight as part of the calibration process, so as long as I don't have the power issues as with the previous machine I think this one might be a keeper

Still a very slightly wonky return key again of course :D

Poor quality MacBook Pro - Brand New!!

:eek:Just received our new MBP. Optical drive started making very funny noise and Apple wanted us to send it in for a replacement. Before we could do that it just "went black" while on the web. Tried restarting, made it to the Apple screen and then it went black again. Quality of computer seemed poorer than our PowerBook G4. Needless to say, we are asking for a refund. Really need our laptop, but very upsetting to pay $3500 for something that doesn't work. Apple won't admit they are having problems with these - and while we may have been "unlucky"- shouldn't this problem have been checked and found BEFORE they shipped it?? Be careful. Will wait until the "bugs are worked out" before ordering again. We've owned Macs for over 20 years, and this has never happened. We expected better.

The powerbooks didnt seem to exhibit those problems (at least the 12" and 15" ones that i had).

I still believe that the 12" PB is the greatest writer's computer ever made. I've had mine for four years and have dropped it at least half a dozen times (a few onto very hard wood floors) and it's still going strong. A couple minor debts, sure, but damn, that computer is well built and there's no way that I'd give it up.

My 12' pb drinks more coffee than i do on any given day. Well not so much anymore....with the new mb and all. But I still pull ole silver out of his resting case for a bit of surfing just for old times. Keeps him happy in retirement i guess. Now if I spilled even one drop of coffee on new blacky i fear it would be the end of our relationship.

That truly sucks, and you must have terrible luck (no offense). I was worried reading these boards about problems, but than my first macbookpro seems to be perfect. Only thing that seems wrong with it is the side view being yellowed. But i'm pretty sure that's normal.

I don't blame the OP at all for being upset. In the past 6 weeks I have purchased both a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. Both have been perfect, but I would certainly be less than pleased had I been forced to return one or both of them 4 times.

A quick Google search found this article: http://news.com.com/PC+users+cant+get+no+satisfaction/2100-1041_3-6105569.html

It is almost a year old, but confirms what I think has generally been true over the years: customer satisfaction ratings for personal computers overall are low, but Apple leads the pack:

Apple Computer led the pack among computer individual vendors with a rating of 83, a 2.5 percent improvement over last year's score. Dell, under siege all year for its customer service problems, rebounded from 2005, improving its score by 5.4 percent to 78.
