I had the 5 series from lauch day. Everthing was great until just this weekend when the bottom portion of the touchscreen stopped working. Several reboots later the problem kept coming back.

Received a 7 series yesterday and noticed the difference in quality as far as the white dots. Never would have thought to look for it and would just assume it is normal until I read about this problem last week with the 7 series and if I never had a clean 5 series to begin with. The one thing that stands out between the two is that the 7 series picture quality is much more vivid than the 5. When viewing pictures it can look a bit grainy. Kind of like with a Panasonic HD tv in vivid mode. Funcitonally I think the 7 series touch screen is much more active and responsive than before my 5 series crapped out.

One last thing different is very minor, my wife received her 7 series iphone and the docking cable doesn't have the pinch locks on them like mine.

edited- the speaker volume seems to be louder with the 7 series and a lot crisper in general however on Orba Squara song the guitar part in the beginning is distorted even at low volume. Really strange.

My 7 series is pristine. As are all the ones I just looked at in the store today.

Both my wife and I have iPhones. Mine is a 5, hers a 7. Before I even started reading about this, I noticed a difference in the screens. The 7 seemed to have better contrast, but it does have a yellow tint to it. Whites and grays look much better on the 5.

I also noticed the checkered/dot pattern on the 7. It's REALLY hard to notice if your not looking for it, but it's there.

So now I'm returning mine because of a sound defect and my wifes because of the yellow tint and checkered pattern.

I've already been waiting two weeks for the Apple store to call me about an exchange. They have new iPhones, but they said 'mine' hasn't come in yet. It had better not be a refurb.

Obviously they are getting the screens from two difference sources. It's too bad they aren't the exact same in their visual quality.

Are you serious? I was in the apple store at the genius bar and a guy was there getting his iPhone looked at. It stopped working for him for whatever reason, and he got a new one right on the spot, I can't believe they're making you wait.

do you mind going to the usage setting and seeing what it says about standby and usage??

Here is my usage for today:

3 hours 6minutes
1 hour of wifi browsing, including posting in forums, and multiple pages open
1 hour of ipod on shuffle
1+ hour of calls
sent about 5 emails, received about 10
sent and received 5 total text messages
Used maps, Weather, and notes

Standby 12 hours and 5 minutes

Battery left, approx 60%.

$$@@#$! I have a 7, should I be worried? Not really into have a $500 + device and it mess up on me. But its been known to happen to me.

Mine is a 4gb, is this unusual?

I've got a 5, no issues, and I'm liking it. However, I'm curious as to the differences in contrast. Has anyone taken a good side-by-side comparison photo to demonstrate? As in, a straight head-on photo of the two versions side by side with the same picture displayed?

Like someone said, its a "paranoia" thread. :) In short, if your screen looks fine - no worries! Not all 7 as evil little screens, but the ones that do have issues are 7s and not he 5s.

If you have a 5 series, be happy. I have seen a few side-by-side and my friends and I agree that the 5 is better - but a 7 can be fine too. Its when they are contrasted or washed out bog time, or have white dots all over them that they are a problem!

dude, I live for paranoia, after I read this I popped like 8 Xanax and started shivering in my corner, holding my iPhone and praying that steve would swoop down with a five series and save me. (he'd be wearing a cape obviously).

Well, I now have a 5 series in my hand. My husband has a 7 series and I'll be able to compare both when he gets home this evening.

Clearly I'd prefer the 7 as I can instantly tell the 5 is more washed out, less contrasty, less vivid, less rich. It's harder to read. The blendings of hue are less blended on this and I see striations compared to the 7.

This was a gift to me from the Tacoma area so if anyone wants the 5, maybe you'd get a good shot over there. I wish I could swap this for one at my store who has the 7's but I guess I'm SOL on that.

I'm sorry, but I definitely think the 7 is the better quality screen. Ours has zero polka-dots. I wish I could tweak this 5 series screen to get it like the 7.

oh son of a bitch!

I noticed three little dots in the bottom left of my screen the weekend they were released. I went in to ask the Apple "geniuses" what they thought and they said it was only dust between the screen. OK, no worries there I guess. Now, I see this. This kind of pisses me off but I don't know that it's a big enough deal to try and exchange it. Maybe I'll go in and talk to them, see what they say.

I beginning to think this entire thread (and this one too) needs to be deleted. There have been quite a few people who were completely happy with their phone visit this thread and then freak out about something they didnt notice before.

If you didnt have a problem with the screen before reading this thread, you still dont have a problem.

I have a phone with a 7 series screen, and it has the dots. But under my normal conditions of use, ---which dont include full brightness, one inch from my face at a 30 degree angle, in a room devoid of all other light,--- the dots cant be seen. If they can bee seen during normal use,and you dont have to hunt for them, then yes its a problem. Otherwise I suggest all of the 7 series owners sit back, relax, and revel in the fact that your screen has richer backs, and more saturation than the 5 series screens.

Damn ....

Remember that an 8GB iPhone is really only a 7.81GB iPhone and a 4GB iPhone is really only a 3.9GB iPhone, so the 8GB model loses an extra ~100MB that the 4GB doesn't.

(The way companies advertise a GB = 1000 bytes when computers see a GB = 1024 bytes...)

Flash memory seems to be in a base-2 number system so I think the actual capacity of the iPhone should be 4 GiB or 8 GiB (4.29 GB or 8.59 GB)... my math could be wrong...

Call me crazy, but I just got a 5 series and want the 7.

Am I the only one who thinks the 7 is better? It's gorgeous compared to the washed out pale 5. I'll try to take comparison pics tonight thought I know this will be tricky to do accurately.

I'm seeing the polka-dots on the 5 series. I've never seen it on our 7.
But I only see it with movement. Switching the screen orientation or similar movement. It appears for a second then dies away.

I'm noticing more pixelization on the 5. Overall not as nice a picture as what I remember from my husband's 7 as of last night.. Will better compare later.

I heard that you can't see the proximity sensor on the 5 series phone.

Can anyone confirm this? It's visible on the 7 series under bright light right above the little speaker slit at the top of the phone.

i didnt even know what a 5 series or 7 series was until i opened the thread and wasnt thinking that mine was any less prone to defects. I was thinking of bluetooth pairing with the bmw 5 series and 7 series but turns out it was the screens.

I didnt come into this thread for a long time cause I thought it was gonna be comparing this phone with another phone and saying how one is like the 5 Series (beemer) and the other is like the 7 Series (beemer) :D

Did a serious comparison of every section in the 2 phones tonight here.

Photos/wallpaper were far more detailed in the 7 series. More depth.
The important thing for me was during the day when reading websites, I found the 5 harder to read and almost blurry compared to my experience with the 7. When the 7 came home, we loaded identical sites and we both agreed text on the 7 was sharper/cleaner.

I wish I could swap this 5 for a 7, but there's nothing really wrong with it other than a less sharp/detailed screen. I don't want to take advantage of Apple here. :(

I'm on my third iPhone. First one I had was a 7, second a 5, and now my third is a 7. The 5 seemed washed out to me and was a lot brighter than my 7. I noticed that the 5 had the white checkered problem on the screen, but is not as visible as it is on the 7. To me the 7 looks a lot better than the 5. Also noticed the 5's I have looked at had dead pixels and the 7's didn't. I also compared my 7 with my cousins 5 and his gives a more washed out/faded look. If you have a 7 keep it. Stop worrying over nothing. Also my first 7 did have a squeaky case, but the one I have now does not. The dots are not a big deal to me as long as the phone works. Plus the speaker on the 7 is much better than the 5.

:apple::apple:

EDIT: One other thing when I had the 5 model screen the battery was really bad. After using it for 30 minutes talk time, 1 hour of web use, and about 6 hours of standby the battery was at 20%.

all of this talk about how one series is better than the other makes me think of the saying " the grass is always greener on the other side " or in our case the screen is always nicer on the other side. I have a seven series and have no problems with mine. I do have the dots but they are only visible when the brightness is up all the way. Other than that i cant even tell they are there. Im just happy im fortunet enough to even own an iphone.

As others have said, even within 5 and 7 series there are variations. My wife's 7 series is much more colorful and contrast than my 7 series. Side by side, I can see why some people would be upset but it doesn't take away from functionality. I just need another reason or flaw to exchange my phone now:(

Chak - I think you're right. It's not a matter of 5 vs. 7.

Hopefully, Apple will allow some type of tweaking for gamma, saturation, tone, etc. in the future or there will be a hack. Then we can create a look tailored to our tastes/eyes.

WOW! I have to say, I read this thread laughing at y'all for your obsessiveness. My Dad and I both got our iPhone's on opening day. They were both series 5. I exchanged mine for getting bad battery life. It turns out I was given a series 7. I just put them side by side. There is a BIG difference in screens. The complexity of the shades is so much nicer on the series 7. Having said that, had I not read this thread, I would never have noticed. The difference is also not as noticeable at 50% brightness. The biggest difference is at the full brightness setting.
