Still genuinely interested in the answer to this.

All your photos stored in cloud, download one to edit / share etc so it’s on your phone.

How does it go back ‘into the cloud’ without deleting it off your device hence deleting it from the cloud I assume?
It keeps a low res version in the photos app on your phone. It decides what photos to keep the full size version. For me, this seems to mean recently taken photos, photos recalled frequently, and favorited photos. I have about 450 GB total in the cloud, but on device storage is only taking up ~3 GB.

I was initially hesitant to press the "optimize" button, but I must say when I did, I've never looked back. Very seamless operation (at least for me). Photos usually download almost instantaneously, and videos may only take a few seconds.

So, in short, the full sized photo is on device initially, and then the device/software determines what is most efficient to keep local after upload. Deletion from phone manually would mean (eventual) deletion from iCloud.

I understand this might not appeal to all, but it has worked great for me.

I went with 512 but I really think 256 would have been fine. A lot of that space is probably going to be an unused waste. I might try to cancel pickup on it and go with 256 instead.

I ordered two units of iPhone from apple online and collected on day 1.

One is 512gb and one is 1TB.

I opened the 512gb and used for one week and sold away the sealed 1TB for extra storage for profit and I ended up only spent the price of 256gb for the 512gb which is nice.

I think 512gb is decent storage while 1tb is a bonus if u really need to take prores 4k video.

I currently have 480GB out of 512GB used.

So I would definetly go for the 1TB model.

512 for me, gotten by with the 256 the last couple of years but getting down to 40gb left. 512 should do me more then enough for a couple years

I was for 512GB until I read for all functionality 256GB was minimum. Because I keep my devices for quite a long time I ordered the 1TB max version.
Crazy thing is that it’s now over 2k euros and twice the price I paid for the 256GB iPhone X.

i settled with 512gb in the end.

managed to sell the extra 1 TB unit for extra profit.
so i ended up paying only 256gb price for the 512gb unit which is good.

Went to a Gorillaz concert this week, and all the new photos and videos I took consumed 87GB. It was a mix of mostly HEIC, but there are some raw and ProRes.

Somewhat glad I got the 1TB. With some diligent management, probably can get by with 512.

Was that the show with Matt Berry doing "Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head?"

yeah. 512gb is a safe storage option. 1TB is a bonus of course.

i dun mind to stick with 512gb since i only paid 256gb price.

anyway. now with the slow lighting port, 1tb iphone backup is very painful process...

Been using AirDrop to transfer, but it’s not a great option either.

sometime if files are too huge especially video files, airdrop will also be interrupted maybe sometime.. cannot complete the transfer..

quite irritating...

never had space problems with my 64gb XS, so went 128gb. okay its still new, and apps will get bigger, but i've over 64gb of space, and over 10gb of my apps is 3 games that i so far havent played and might never played on it (civ vi, easy golf, diablo immortal)

photos, im happy with being on icloud and also on my mac. at the minute im on the 50gb for 99c but before a big holiday soon ill have to up it to €3 for 200gb.

movies are only any use when on a plane and ill have my ancient ipad air 2 for that. music, i tend to listen to the radio, but i pay for itunes match. games, i download lots of them but only play 1 or 2.

Does anyone know of a good shortcut that helps with this?

Maybe a transfer to Mac or cloud every X days. Or maintain sync?

I suppose this is the job of Adobe cloud or iCloud sync, but was wondering if there’s some other workflows others have cooked up as alternatives.

1TB. That’s what I have. The cloud is no good if you don’t have internet. Nor does the cloud save full resolution. Plus it may take a while to download the photos.

Wait...it doesn't? I thought iCloud would safe the original file, and only keep the lower res on-device. If this is true, that sucks. Does iCloud only store the 'adjusted' or 'processed' copy?
