I’m at the point that I’m not sure I want faster data. Click on a long video by mistake and I already blow out a bunch of data allotment before I can back out. Not sure I’ll realize a meaningful practical benefit.

Well said. Wireless data allowances need to be changed for this to make sense in a lot of countries to not further rip of the users.

True. There’s always second world countries and so on. ;)

Second world countries outside like the EU - like Switzerland, Japan and the USA you mean? ;) Anyway, best we don't take the thread off topic. As for the £39 billion the EU is asking Britain for as the divorce bill, maybe the EU will spend that on creating 5G inside the EU. You can thank us later. :D

No point in a 5G iPhone when most people won’t be able to access 5G this year. It’s better that they wait and make a 5G phone that is compatible with all the network bands than put one out which has limited compatibility. I still remember the iPhone 5 4G debacle in the UK. It was sold as 4G capable and when 4G finally launched it was only compatible with the 4G of one carrier.

5g is barely in a few U.S. cities and will only be in a few more by the end of the year. Additionally, it will only be in certain areas and neighborhoods of those cities. https://www.lifewire.com/5g-availability-us-4155914

Manufacturers are in pissing contests to confuse customers into buying this years’ phones that have 5G b/c the market is saturated and sales have plateaued.

There is very little benefit to very few people to get new phones that have 5G capabilities.

I’m not saying there’s no benefit, neither am I saying pushes into new markets and technologies are bad for customers, but what I am saying is that for now, for most people, it’s a gimmick. Period.
I don’t think it’s a gimmick. I think it’s just not applicable to the Western market yet. I’m sure they already have 5G in Asia.

Pretty sure that’s what I said, and it does make it a gimmick at the moment.

Also, U.S. and China are leading 5G rollouts. Korea also approaching.

There are reasons why Apple should release a 5G phone:

1.) Marketing. 5G Android phones will be releasing soon. Next year they will all be 5G.
2.) Future-proofing. Apple loyalists may not jump to Android to get 5G capable phones, but many just wont upgrade their iPhones until Apple offers a 5G capable phone.
3.) Image. Apple’s image is already taking a hit. They’re offering fewer features, dated hardware for higher prices. Offering last-generation-network-access-only doesn’t help their image.

The latest rumors today say (possibly) no 5G iPhone until late 2021 (at the earliest). That’s a long ways away. 5G will be well known, heavily marketed and readily available between now and then. 2.5 years is a lifetime in tech years.

Apple’s foolish Qualcomm battle has painted them into a corner they don’t want to be in. Apologists will come out in droves defending Apple and downplaying this issue, but it’s exactly that: an issue.

I remember when Apple released the iphone 5 in the UK. It was supposed to be future proof with 4G compatibility. Yet when 5G eventually launched in the UK it was only compatible with once carrier. That wasn’t future proofing. People on the incompatible carriers were sold iPhones and told it was 4G ready. It wasn’t.

Did you mean 4G there? Something similar happened to me with ym 5, but it was the carrier's fault - my phone could use 4G but it didn't roll out until at least 6 months later.

I've been showing 5g a lot lately. It just started a few days ago.

That’s not 5G, that’s 5GE which is not real 5G, just glorified 4G LTE, AT&T being sneaky there...
AT&T’s 5GE Explained: What It Is, And What It Isn’t
What is 5GE?
5GE, or 5G Evolution, is merely AT&T's name for its latest and greatest iteration of LTE, which utilizes specific technologies, like 256 QAM, 3-way carrier aggregation and 4X4 MIMO that will play a role in 5G's ultimate development. 5GE is available in 400 markets and counting.

That said, 5GE in all practical terms does not deliver an experience that is ostensibly different from what's already available with 4G LTE. In fact, other carriers like Verizon and T-Mobile already have it too, have for years and simply call it LTE Advanced.

They should have called it 4G+ or or LTE-A.

Honestly, I would have been very happy with 4G if I could get 50-150 Mbps regardless of whatever you call it.

In Delhi, 3G/4G are both patchy. And it’s very common to fall well below 4 Mbps or even 2 Mbps and often no data in several spots around the capital.

Anything faster than 15-20 Mbps is a rarity.

Kind of a similar situation here in South Africa, here in Johannesburg we have wide 4G LTE coverage with some spots having LTE-A while others have normal LTE, and majority having 3.5G, once you get into the outskirts around the country you drop to 3G or even EDGE (2.5). Dead spots mostly found in the more mountainous areas.

I would just love to have 4G LTE-A in wider coverage before they jump on 5G, but we already have 5G sites in testing, despite patchy 4G.

Why does everyone insist on 5G? What's so special about it? Isn't 4G fast enough for everyday use?

Oh well, for those not interested in tech progression, you could always tie yourselves to your 4G tower in protest. :D
