Could a 64-bit FCP require more ram thus the need for the 8 core model? Just wondering why the Apple guy told me the 8 core would be needed over the 6 core for a 64-bit FCP.

will the base config 6-core with the 3GB still run faster than the base config 8-core 2.4GHz with 6GB if compared, or will in this case the 8-core be faster because of the 3GB extra regardless the lower clock speed CPU's

asking because I'd like to know what the best buy would be when one is not able to update on RAM immediately because of budget.

Is it so that the 3GB 6-core is kind of like a computer build for nobody with that low Memory?

programs that will be used Adobe CS5 (photoshop, illustrator, after effects....), painter for digital drawing (wacom) Pro tools (music editing)

to me, the 6 core is preferable to the 8 core

you can run the computer with 3GB or ram, but you will want to drop the $650 on four 4GB as soon as you could.

the quad core 3.2 will also run FCP quite well, consider that route if the money is really that tight

So long as the capacity requirement won't exceed 16GB, the SP Hex core will be a really nice balance of single and multi-threaded performance IMO at the $3699 MSRP ("sweet spot" if you will).

But not everyone even needs 6 cores, and the DP systems may be necessitated by the RAM limitation (Intel limited the 36xx parts to 24GB, but that's using 6x DIMM slots, so 4GB DIMM's * 4 slots = 16GB max for the SP systems).

is it even possible to buy four 4GB at that price 650$?

when i look at the apple store the only memory they sell is:

1x2GB = 150$
1X4GB = 500$
1X1GB = 75$

also is it possible to have like 2x4GB and 1x2G and 1x1GB memory in the slots, or do you always need to use the same GB memory modules? (3x1GB, 4x4GB, 4x2GB)

even if would have no money to update the GB in the first year...do you guys still recomand the 6-core or in this case go for the 8-core?

will the 6 core even with 3GB ram stil outperform the 8-core with 6GB ram?

Just ordered my 6 core 3.33 Mac Pro w/5870 and 8GB. Expecting delivery between aug 23 - Aug 27

And a pair of 2TB WD Caviar black 64MB Cache drives from amazon

Will be using it to ingest RED footage and Cut pro res 4444 on FCP and then to After Effects, Motion, AE again, and back to FCP. Immediately, every day, ****** yea!

I'm so happy!

GET ONE and you'll feel like me!

Now I feel all impatient and antsy because its this long wait... urgghhh..

Don't worry, you'll eventually feel that way too :p

I already feel that way!! Ships in 10-15 days here in Mexico and I'm driving 4 hours to receive it in Texas just so I can get it faster :eek:

my guess is the 6-core will still perform "allot" faster than the 8-core even with the 6cores 3GB against the lower clocked 8-core with 6GB.

could someone confirm this? i want to order but not before i'm sure this is the case.

Just wait for benchmark tests to come in.

But yes, you're probably correct. The 6-core will likely be leaps and bounds faster.

Hi All,

Question: Can anybody provide links, or additional info regarding exactly how many cores Photoshop CS4, CS5 can utilize, for which tasks?

It seems to be common knowledge that Photoshop can't utilize anything more than a few cores, but I'm looking for a little more detail. Because I spend more time in Photoshop than I do my living room, and sometimes create hundred layer, 9 Gig images, this (and of course RAM and Clock Speed) is a central issue for me when choosing between 4-6-8 or 12 core.

Thanks!

what a stupid move from Apple...its really hard to decide between the 6 and 8 core and you just might end up buying the wrong machine either way.

the 6-core would be a no brainer if it wasn't for the hilarious 3GB and outrageous prices to update RAM...also the fact that it only has 4 slots and a max 16GB makes it even more questionable if the 6-core is indeed a better option than the 8-core...even tho the 8-core has low clock speed there is atleast still the option to get cheaper RAM and for the future you could throw in two 6-cores and turn the machine into a 12-core when the prices come down on the 6-cores.

something tells me you will regret buying the 8-core now, but you will regret that you have bought the 6-core in the future = you always end up being screwed with these kind of configurations.

That's what I was thinking also but, I like having the extra RAM tray for extra expandability. I'm assuming though in normal use w/ an SSD the one processor 6 core would be better than the lower clocked dual processor 8 core?

I think 16gb will be plenty for majority of people, especially with an sdd, 6-core will be performing better than the 8-core on most tasks.

Yup, my thoughts exactly! On a brighter note... what a huge upgrade for me either way, from my circa 2004 G5 Dual 2.0. with a slowly dying logic board.

I have been asking this question for quite some time now. Seems everybody is quick to give their opinion of how many cores PS uses, but the answers vary greatly and nobody seems to have a source for their info. I hope you get an answer!

I agree. I called Apple Specialist again, second time this week. Both say the 8 core is the better deal for the future. I use FCP a lot. A future 64-bit FCP will take advantage of not only the extra cores, but twice the amount of memory.

So if you are going to upgrade next year, go 6 core. If you want your computer to last at least 5 years, both specialist say 8 core. BIG NOTE: Depending on the programs you use.

Call yourself to see if they say different.

i called but i gave up really...the guy i had on the phone was like "ofcourse the 8-core is faster, it has 8 cores!!" :confused: when i asked him about the 6-core and the higher clock speed all he had to say was " yes but an 8-core has two more cpu's" .....*me "ok...thnx for you're help, byyy"

for a 4000$ machine its a damn shame they cant even provide customers with some descent explaining or what about some statistics on the MacPro website? They are probably not showing those because of something fishy

Macperformanceguide found that most photography apps, including PS, don't support more than 4 cores. I'd hazard a guess that none of Adobe's products, aside from maybe the video stuff, support more than that.

the 6 is the one to get if your software doesn't support all those cores...of course, when newer versions of the software come out they might, but how long will that take? is the tradeoff in speed now worth the benefits in a couple years?
