I mentioned earlier it doesn't happen in any but the most taxing of 3D games. Far Cry 3 is one of those games, and it's from the bottom left of the display. Not sure what to think now given that some of you say you don't hear it. Hrmm...
Only two people in this thread (me included) seem to notice/have it.![]()
Hmm... really? You sure you just don't notice it? It's coming from what appears to be the bottom left of the system. It's there the whole time in Far Cry 3... It IS pretty subtle, but if you know what you're hearing, it's there. If you have any sound on/don't know what you're listening for, it's quite possible you won't hear it.
By the by, the new Devil May Cry game (if you're a fan like I am) is a fantastic game to show off the iMac. Maxed out at 2560x1400 and 60fps solid (I lock vsync, but I bet it's much higher fps with it off if you can deal with the screen tearing).
I just fired up FC3 and turned my sound and fan down and there is NO noise coming from the iMac mate. Unless it is similar to that CPU idle noise which some people cant hear. Where did you download DMC from?
Steam. $49.99.
I made a mistake. The sound is actually coming from the top right of the iMac, not the bottom left (that's embarrassing!). So if you're sitting in front of it, the top right (at the back) is where the sound comes from. As soon as I alt-tab out of a game, it goes away, and on a GPU overclock it's a bit louder.
Sounds like coil whine to me, and is sorta-kinda similar to the CPU idle noise (I know that sound well). But much louder. Though again, with the fans going full blast and if you're not in a REALLY quiet room, you simply won't notice it.
I just tested it in a DEAD silent room with my +200/+300 overclock with the fans on only 1800rpm and the imac was close to dead silent. It must be similar to the CPU idle noise as i cant hear it.
Interesting. Thanks for testing. I'm assuming you have an i7 model, too?
Yup. Just got my sister to have a listen aswell and she was laughing at me asking what i was talking about.
Well I'm not sure what it can be, then... Hrmm.... Not even sure that there's anything in the top right of the iMac!
Windows 7 user?
Yup, Win 7 Ultimate.
I think it's normal. I just googled some on GeForce coil whine, and this video sounds pretty much exactly it. From reading, it seems like some cards will have it worse than others etc etc.

Again, it's not blaring loud! I'm just pretty sensitive to all sorts of noises.
Not going to worry about it anymore.
Wow, i can hear the noise in that video, that is really bad.
Thanks for your answer!
How did you setup the 2.1 speakers on your iMac? I mean, the iMac doesn't have an input for those speakers, right?
Yea, USB. Other options would be the headphone jack ... watch that gets chopped come 2013![]()
Doesn't the buzzing from the iMac drive you a bit bananas? Or do you just tune it out?
It's not loud. Barely noticeable. I think it's because bootcamp doesn't raise the the rpm of the gpu fan signficantly -- i think I can get more stability by using lubbosfancontrol and manually setting the fan rpm higher as needed.
but the imac gets overclocked very loud when i playing far cry 3 and i'm a little bit scared! my girlfriend ask: what are you doing? thats sounds scary!
so is it dangerous? and i think its a little bit strange that the fan become so loud and the temperatur raises only 2 units up.
another question: do i need a fan-control tool? i think the imac regulate the speed itself because it gets very loud when the gpu is overlocked.
thanks
EDIT1:
now i get it: the fan gets very loud if the temperature of the gpu hits 87.
Ah so you hear the buzzing! I agree I hear it because the fans aren't spinning up as much as they ought. I should maybe use Lubbos, too, but I can't get it to read temp correctly.![]()
Yeah Lubbo does not read the temps correctly, i just set the min and max to around 2200rpm, overclock using MSI Afterburner, then keep an eye on the temps while im gaming using the built in OSD that MSI Afterburner has. GPU never goes above 80c like this.
which app do you recommend for the fan control under Windows 7? I'd like to try the OC with MSI Afterburner.
Thanks!
As there's no optical, and I don't have a thumb drive with me or a formatted external, it becomes a bit tricky.)
I was able to use FUSE + NTFS-3G to write the bootcamp drivers to my existing external without reformatting it. It can be a little finicky but it worked.
