Did you do the gradient test? or the solid color test.

Look at the color transitions. Its easily noticable on the Color LCD profile. Adobe RGB (1998) remedies this a little.

I've plugged it in to an external monitor. A noticeable difference.

I clicked that link.. all colors blend in very well. Looks perfect! I'm using the Color LCD profile.

I clicked on the link with my Desktop that has the Samsung SynMaster 204t and it looks the same as my mac.. nice, smooth

Download LCD Test 2.0b, run the gradient verification w or w/o Quartz. It should be noticable especially on the Color LCD profile.

Look closely at the green gradient towards the right. If you see "feathers" or something to that extent spanning out--that's the banding. it's slight, yes, but on any quality LCD or external monitor, it is non existent.

On all of my calibrated monitors including external, there is slight banding towards the dark end but nothing out of the ordinary.

If you want perfect gradients, pay $2000 for a Eizo LCD otherwise enjoy the Mac. I doubt any of you actually have a need for perfect color renderation and transitions in the first place.

the screen is bad

when i edit a photo in aperture and then hook up my mbp to my acd the photo looks bad very bad

I can't find a download for the 2.0b. The original website says they are updating it etc...

Are you calibrated? That would cause a discrepency between the displays.

Banding is only one of the problems. My MBP is week 45 and what makes me "uneasy" are also viewing angles - its impossible to have a "normal" view without dark patches moving when Im moving my head (Its hard to describe this). Also antiglare filter which looks like dirt on the screen. MBP screens are not Pro - thats for sure.

Oh ok, I see your banding issue with the green. This would be interesting to do on other LCDs. I did try it on my external and received a little banding with the green. I'm not too worried about it if my external showed it because thats about as professional as you can get without spending tons of money.

I guess I would I need to ask, what do the past notebooks show? Like the powerbook G4 etc..

no noticeable banding on my iBook G4 800Mhz. Some banding on my samsung 920n panels (but then they're not expensive panels).

No banding on my mother's powerbook G4 15" 1.5ghz and no banding on her old Pismo powerbook G3 400mhz either.

Are you able to look up the monitor on the LCDs that don't show banding and verify the colors allowed?

I know my relatively cheap Samsung 753DF CRT had extremely little to no problem with gradient. Better than the MBP screen at least.

Has anyone brought this problem to Apples attention? If so, what are their explanations or reasoning? I don't see if affecting me since I don't do high level photo editing, but there is an audience out there.

anybody know how much does new screen for macbook pro cost and is it possible to just buy a new one and change it? I thought that this could be idea. I don't think that this will be so complicated. only need to buy this one, which will fit :) and what about connectors? they are all same, or there is difference? we need an engineer here ;) this really could be nice idea, though...

yeah, maybe that will. but I'm out of choice, because my apple center won't replace mbp, and they don't think that this is a problem. but maybe it can be done without any signs of changing ;)

I haven't taken my laptop to the Apple Store because I know what they will say, "Does it work, looks fine, bye bye." Thats how all computer companies work.

About replacing your LCD and not telling, no comment. I always fear that somewhere a "Void if broke" sticker is hidden and if broken your screwed. If you didn't buy Applecare and you are near the end, go for it. If you did purchase applecare, I wouldn't attempt.

Has anyone taken their laptop back to the Apple Store and complained and received a replacement?

the main problem of my screen is grain. everything else is fine. I didn't have a chance to show it to my apple center. Just know that they won't do anything.

But I read some stories of replacement screens just because of the grain, but it's all was in US. I'm not from US and we don't have Apple Store, just Apple reseller. Maybe one day I will go and show them...

p.s. I don't have apple care, but my guarantee just started :)

So.. we have a few issues here:

- grain - which is probably not related to panel itself but to the antiglare coating?
- viewing angles - again its the bloody coating - funny thing is that there were people complaining about it before C2D - see here: http://www.osnews.com/story.php/14974/Review-Apples-MacBook-Pro/
- panel being unable to display gradients because of its specs? 247k colors?

Now what is the solution? Obviously Apple will not recognize it as a problem and I can assume that getting replacement will not help. So what users who are unhappy with screen can do?

I just did the leg work and found out more about the monitor that we know as the 9C60.

Wow, in Windows it is absolutely disgusting without colour calibration on this LCD. I never knew Windows can look so bad.

i just dont trust apps that cant spell "viewable area 15.9'' (40.5 sm)" how
big is 1 sm it should be cm, it cant count either F12 tells me that 15.9" is 40.38cm. ooh maybe thats it 1cm = 1.03 sm

Well, I trust the main details, like manufacturer and model number. It's obvious that one of the main problems with the large 17" display is uneven backlighting resulting from one backlight. AU optronics' new 17" model is a response to that. We don't know if Apple plans to use that display though. Hopefully they will and that should improve the situation dramatically.
