Similar issues on my 2015 15" rMBP

Code:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8005c279d7): com_apple_driver_AppleUSBCardReaderInterfaceNub::setPowerState(0xffffff805e724100 : 0xffffff7f892ecf86, 2 -> 0) timed out after 30730 ms\"@/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.41.3/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5302

I have the same machine and have seen this kernel panic twice now, about a week apart.

10.15.2 seems to solve the problem. Waiting the final release.

Did you install the final? I did, and set up my 5 desktop workspaces without remembering to check first whether the issue was solved! I'd rather not experiment since if I have to reboot I lose my document/application set up.

At the moment I'm back to mojave cause I need to have a solid working machine.

I will be back in Catalina when .5 will be released :)

Well I gave it a try and no joy. Mac went to sleep and could not wake up. KP. Back to turning off all the energy saver settings. Grrr.

Having similar issue. 2019 loaded 15" MBP. (2) 4k monitors connected via Thunderbolt/Displayport adapter. Mojave had zero problems. Catalina started kernel panicking at what seemed like random time intervals. I narrowed down to the system going into sleep mode and then panic occurred. Unplugged everything, tested, system was fine. Tried everything one by one. It's only when monitor(s) are connected - which makes no sense.

10.15.1 - still an issue

Went to Apple Store and had the entire system board replaced (because that is your only option). Problem still exists.

Another forum mentioned the issue being related to the Displayport power/sleep switching functionality. For giggles, I plugged the monitors in with a Thunderbolt HDMI adapter... ALL KERNEL PANICS STOPPED. Are you serious Apple? Clearly the issue is related to DP. Whether it's specific to the video card or some other h/w combination is not clear. I've read multiple posts and watched YouTube videos about this and not all are 2019 MBP's. Leads me to believe it's an OS bug, but that's just me.

Just upgraded to 10.15.2 and switched back to DP - bug is still there.

Catalina is a trash OS.

The weird thing is that my KP errors are not consistent with other people having the same issue, but the symptom is identical. Try the HDMI option and remove anything that uses DP - just to see if it changes anything. I'm curious now.

First couple lines of KP log:

FYI: I've switched between two separate monitors; 4K@60hz and 1440@144hz via DP on MBP 16, zero issues with Catalina 10.5.2.

Have you tried turning off automatic graphic switching and see if it is better?

That's what is so weird about this whole thing. I've never seen something like this happen with a monitor. Yes, tried all combinations of auto graphics/no disk sleep, no power nap... same thing every time. remove DP protocol from equation and it works like a champ. The warranty replacement arrived with a clean Catalina install. I created a local account with no apps installed on the off chance it was related me; same problem. I also have multiple DP adapters and even tried direct USB-C (which is DP over USB-C) into the laptop... same problem. This is the 2019 15". I should have clarified.

I would honestly call AppleCare; this needs to go to the engineers to investigate.

I have a very strong feeling that if I remove my Time Machine drive (an external SSD) the KP problem would go away. I may try that, though having ongoing backups OR using some Eco settings doesn't seem like a very good trade off. Still, given how much I use the cloud I may have to rethink the necessity of my local backups.

I'm having the same issues with my new MacBook Pro (16")... I'm getting kernel panics pretty much every day several times a day as my computer goes to sleep. I have 2 4k external monitors connected via a caldigit hub to DisplayPort. Anyone found any fixes?

I'm not an external monitor user so am not super familiar with the various connection options, but I *think* someone mentioned that using an HDMI adapter in their chain somehow solving their issues with external monitors.

I'm having the same issue. MBP 15 2019 with 2 4K monitors connected via USB-C. I went to apple store last week and they suggested to replace the logic board. I still have the same issue with the new logic board. I ordered a new thunderbolt 3 cable from apple store (expensive). Hopefully it will fix the problem.

I can also confirm that I had the same issue before the Catalina upgrade.

Same issue with 10.5.2 on two 2015 MacBook Airs. setPowerState panics after nearly every wake up. So whatever it is, 10.5.2 didn't fix it.

I tried the suggestions of disabling disk sleep, resetting SMC and PRAM with no change.

But downgrading to Mojave, that did the trick.

I had an issue which was superficially the same: my iMac would have to restart almost every time it slept, only after upgrading to Catalina from Mojave. I was already irked with Catalina for a number of smaller things, but in this case resetting the SMC was the solution.

Warning, rant below. Short version - iMac was restarting when asleep longer than 2 hours. Unchecking everything on Power Saver fixed it. Really, I think it was specifically the unchecking power nap that did it. Hope it helps someone else. I have a 2019 iMac on 10.15.3.

Wow. I got a new 2019 iMac in October. Worked fine for a while and then just kept shutting down every time it slept for longer than an hour. Went round and round with Apple support suggesting the most remedial things over and over again. One time a support person told me to start the computer while pressing specific keys on the keyboard, about 15 seconds later I told her, "okay, I am logged in now." She said "ok, you'll just have to wait and see if the problem occurs again." I said "but we didnt do anything but restart." She said "You didn't select all the things to reinstall the OS?" I said "Umm...for one thing, you didn't even tell me the right keys for that and second, do you think the OS installed in 15 seconds? Really?" Another person was convinced it was my RAM replacement even though it was approved AND I had already had the company replace the RAM once, AND I had already put the old apple RAM back in and that wasn't working either. It is so clear they have no clue, no matter how many you talk to. They finally made me bring it in, said they were getting the same error but did not know why and replaced the logicboard. Got it home and worked for a while and started doing it again! I called support, got a bunch of the same old "restart" instructions and then they finally threw their hands up, acted like I was being ridiculous and said "software issue, figure it out yourself or return it. Quit bugging us, don't bring it in again." I know my software and my computer, I knew better than that. I finally found some error log codes and scoured the internet long enough to find this discussion and my solution! Know what it was? I turned off power nap. No one in support ever mentioned that. Wouldn't that be a good starting point for a computer that can't wake up? I didn't wipe the computer clean and install every piece of software one by one waiting hours in between each to recreate the problem like they suggested, didn't return it like they suggested, didn't pay quadruple for Apple brand RAM replacement. I changed one stupid little setting. Sorry, had to vent about how incapable they are. Thank you so much for ending my misery with this solution!

Still happening with 10.15.3. One 3440x1440 monitor connected to a 2014 MacMini through DP. I am now waiting to see if disabling all energy management will alleviate the problem. Seems like an issue with DP + (high res) monitors + monitor sleep/wake functionality to me. I would prefer not to downgrade to Mojave, so I am hoping Apple will fix this - perhaps even before launching 10.16? :-/

Similar if not same problem for me on 10.15.3 in a Mac Pro 2010, but I believe it is due to a faulty SATA drive.

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800f2288b7): "IOUSBMassStorageInterfaceNub::setPowerState(0xffffff807a6dcf00 : 0xffffff7f90f0397e, 1 -> 0) timed out after 102069 ms"@/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.81.5/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5302

Disk Utility First Aid indicates no problem with the drive, but the issue seems to happen only when this drive is attached via USB.

Panic occurs within a couple of minutes (that seems to jibe with timeout of 102069 ms in crash report) and reboot occurs.

Tested same config with nothing changed, except a different drive attached in the USB dock and no problem ....

Thanks,

Mike

I have moved on and will just not have this drive connected when I sleep my machine, but for fun I did some additional testing:

Stuff like this can be tricky because I am on an older unsupported Mac Pro (Mac Pro 2009 with a firmware update to make it a Mac Pro 2010).

Anywho, mac panics when drive is connected via USB, eSATA, or when installed in the Mac Pro via the Intel SATA controller.

When connected to a MacBook Pro via USB DOCK to USB/Thunderbolt connector, no panic occurs when I sleep the machine.

Have a nice day.

I'm in the same boat. 2014 MBP, Catalina 10.15.5. USB 3.0 external drives and getting a kernel panic when the MBP goes to sleep. Several times I've come back from leaving the computer alone and it has restarted. It generally won't happen if the USB drives are not connected. For the time being I've turned off Powernap to see if that helps.

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8010815f27): "org_dungeon_driver_IOSATDriver::setPowerState(0xffffff8067616450 : 0xffffff7f90af4234, 3 -> 2) timed out after 100989 ms"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.121.2/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296
