I would expect the next revision of finder to have a bit more graphical bite. It still is way functional. I prefer functionality over purty colors. I like how the poster up there said, "Apples and Macs"... LOL.

Windows 7 has VASTLY SUPERIOR wallpapers and themes included than any OS X .

Considering Apple and Macs are supposed to be design-centered, it's ironic Microsoft's OS has much cooler psychedelic and anime wallpaper than the kinda stale Leopard and SL wallpaper.

Look at this -

2hr1sn5.jpg

Yeah... because I totally buy an operating system for the Desktop Backgrounds....

And there is totally no way, anyone with a mac can type in "Windows 7 Turtle" into Google Images, download the image and set it as a desktgop background.

Microsoft didn't design this, they just employed artists.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Iconfactory <--- Look at the 3rd paragraph down. A small amount of proof that Microsoft Employ artists. I wonder which company does the desktop backgrounds....

Nice dock by the way... where did you get that- ... oh yeah.

Ooh... look! I've done the unthinkable!

the REAL Jersey Shore
obviously satire, or a shill...

It is a stunning realization - Windows 7 is the Mac Killer, the beast prophesied by Jobs that would appear from the West and rend a...It was a total immersion into Mac OS X culture, Starbucks, and a new Bohememian wardrobe from Urban Outfitters.... I smugly glared at non-Mac users while sipping green iced yea and reveled in utter Mac glory and the Mac brotherhood....The Windows 7 interface was fresh, fast, and made me want to be productive....while on a Mac , for some odd reason, makes me tend to lose focus and just kind of goof around....this phenomenon has been widely observed, and attributed to hidden registries in OS X that make you want to look at icons and just feel good just chilling....I am a PC user, that got tired of Windows and switched to Mac because it looked cool, used it exclusively, and realized that Windows 7 makes me productive in a way that OS X somehow doesn't.

It seems OS X does the opposite effect - it creates a procrastinating effect, akin to smoking a blunt.

I am not sure what is funnier, the original post... or the many replies thinking this is a serious discussion. A quick question... how many of you thought the "balloon boy" was "real"?

I will now go back to my heightened state of procrastination, obviously brought on by hidden feel-good registries...
cheers....

PS: after seeing the awesome "turtle unbound" desktop, in which the creature is unfettered by dock icons tethering him to our earthly realm, I did want to offer something of real use to this discussion. MacRabbit.com makes an awesome utility called "Deskshade". Most everyone is guilty of dumping a bunch of crap all over their desktop, myself included. Deskshade is way easier than calling the crew of CleanSweep to come in and declutter... it simply hides all of your stuff under a desktop image (that can be toggled on/off). It gives your computer a clean looking slate, which is always less stressful than facing a million little icons strewn about helter-skelter. I think it used to be be free, or I got it bundled with something. Now it is $19... and worth every penny. cheers, michael

I'm actually on the fence to buying win7 pro. After reading this thread, I'm leaning not too.

Among other things, I support desktops at my company, so I was leaning to getting win7 prior to our adoption of win7 (summer 2010). After reading this thread, it looks like win 7 may just be all eye candy sitting on top of vista.

While the OP is working heard to justify win 7's superiority, I'm not seeing it based on what others have posted. It looks like a decent OS from MS but its still windows.

btw, I'm not completely ignorant in windows 7 as I played with the beta and RC. Its just hard to justify dropping 260 - 299 for the professional version of win 7 (and yes I need that flavor over the home edition).

Surely this whole tread is flame bait, c'mon, really. I mean why did anyone bother to post, it is obviously an attempt by a 10yo to start a flame war. In his OP he states OSX distracts him, then he offers up that affliction on the art world as a desktop, and that is supposed to be less distracting? LMAO, is it the 1st of April?

(I'm not pointing this out as a flaw of Windows, but as a genuine question)

Did your Vaio come loaded with tons of crapware?

Are we really comparing 90 day trials of Norton and Microsoft Works to iLife here?

My Vaio didn't come with any crap, and if it had done I would have blamed the store and/or Sony for it. Then again, I buy my PC hardware from a reptuable reseller that installs Office on everything and removes Norton and McAfee as standard if it's on there, replacing it with programs like AVG.

Having said that, there were a couple of small, fairly useless Vaio applications on it, but those were easy enough to delete and I can understand why some inexperienced people might find them useful.

Don't forget to keep your virus protection up to date, and run a spyware program every morning.

You do realise that those run automatically in the background once a day in this modern world we're living in, right? And sensible people schedule them for, say, 3am when they aren't using their computer? (And if they aren't, a bit of slow down for a couple of hours doesn't hurt).

Oh, and not forgetting that Apple itself suggests you use anti-virus protection on a Mac.

I have W7 on my Macbook. I rarely go into SL any more because there's no reason to. W7 works very well and runs all the applications I use for business, leisure and study.

It's a home run from MS although I still prefer the Apple hardware.

And that's just that, your opinion. Most Mac users aren't doing that and seeing how Apple is selling more and more Macs, Windows 7 hasn't put any dent in their business.

Windows 7 has VASTLY SUPERIOR wallpapers and themes included than any OS X .

I think the OS X Finder looks terrible compared to Windows 7 explorer.

Windows 7 seems "fresher" and new, and the grey and aqua theme is looking very long in the tooth.

Aero is better than grey/metallic grey.

Look at this -

2hr1sn5.jpg

Damn that is hideous.

I've been using Windows 7 since the R.C. and now own Windows 7 Professional (for free.. thanks to MSDN). I use it via Boot Camp to run Windows only applications (i.e. Visio Basic) and play games.

It is a lot nicer than XP was, and far better tuned than Vista. But it is still Windows - copying files means that Windows Explorer window will not function (or be laggy) until the file has been copied.

I've had a relatively good experience with Windows 7 - the GUI is pretty sexy (though Windows Explorer is fugly.. when I use that and go back to Finder, Finder just seems so much more refined and easier on the eyes), I love the aero themes etc.

But will I want to move back to Windows..? I'm too accustomed to Expose, the convenient keyboard shortcuts (CTRL requires me moving my hand where has CMD's position my hand remains stationary), and just that OS X works relatively well.

I have said, "what the hell is this thing doing..?" a few times since I've been using Windows 7 natively.

I don't get that - and I do a lot of copying in Win 7 (multiple gigs containing many thousands of files) I'd say you're doing something wrong.

And whilst the above sentence is 100% accurate, I'd also like to say that it's the exact same response I get in this place when I complain about OS X doing something I don't like - usually Safari being the laggy piece of crap it loves to be.

It's amusing that you are quick to tell someone with Windows problems that they are 'doing something wrong', whilst insisting that your own alleged OS X problems are Apple's fault somehow.

That's kooky logic, man.

well thanks. This thread is a hoot overall... but really, you should check out the ap, it is one of my desert island aps, just for its zen-like simplicity. I wish I could clean my house this easily, lol.

This brings me some peace & order to my work environment (at least when I am not subliminally distracted by imaginary OSX hidden gobblygook).
cheers, michael

I guess maybe it is the speed of my hard drive that isn't exactly helping - Finder can beachball sometimes when copying/duplicating large files, but only briefly. Windows Explorer just becomes "un-responsive" for the duration of the file being copied.

My hard drive is 500GB 5400rpm..

That's kooky logic, man.

The kooky logic is thus

Every time I have an OS X problem - I'm told in this place that it's my fault.

Yet this guy has a problem, and immediately assumes it's Win 7's fault, not his.

Where's the logic in that.?

THAT is the kooky logic.

As a computer "power user" who has used computers for over a decade, and macs for just 3 months, I have come to a conclusion. In the 3 months I have been using a Macbook, not having to defrag (windows based computers out of the box inherently start to degrade as the "registry" becomes polluted / it's inevitable on most systems), not having to worry about viruses, I have not had such a worry free experience. Couple that with the powerful Unix backbone architecture and it is a win / win situation for me. If I want to play games, I'll install a Mac game or Bootcamp, mostly I game on 360.

In my opinion, for my experience, Apple has done me right. Seems like every time I bought a Windows computer or laptop in the past I started out on top but things always progressed downhill. With the 3 months I've used OSX, I expect that my feelings will not change 6 months to a year down the road.

Everyone's opinion will differ, freedom of choice-make your own decision. It's nice not having to choose between O.S.'s though, since bootcamp is built in. That was rather nice of Apple.

On a side note, don't you just love how when you buy a PC you have to immediately start uninstalling applications and shareware crap? I didn't have to do that with my Mac. It came with everything I needed, and full versions at that. Norton 120 day trial!,Bongos/Zongos/Weatherbug/Toolbars Oh my!, Online Poker, Yahoo Games trial, Office Trial, shopping report, Ebay companions, you don't see any of that crap on an Apple, well unless you install it.

Just goes to show you, Apple has a good thing going. If they lower prices,
and up more configuration options, I think they will continue to do well. According to NPD and Betanews, they have 42% of the desktop market. That is _one_ brand mind you. The other half is composed of many different
Windows based brands and systems. I guess that is why they have such a high valued stock.

Flame my post if you will. I rather like Windows 7. Since 95, I think it is the best. Vista was a freaking monster that should crawl back into it's cave.

When you can buy a Windows laptop at Best Buy for $200, $1,000 for the cheapest Mac Laptop looks like a whole lot of money.

Even though the MacBook has superior specs to a cheap Windows laptop, most people just use their notebook to surf Facebook so they don't care about the specs as much as they care about the extra $800.

$200 laptop versus $1000 MacBook
SAME AS
$20K Honda versus $100K BMW
