People always think this and that "doesn't make sense" and then Apple goes ahead and does it anyway. ;)

But unless they improve MagSafe a lot, i do hope they will take a bit longer.

It will make more sense when it's reality. Kinda pointless to argue about it now when we don't see what Apple provides alongside it for solutions. This has been an inevitable step for years now though.

I need the port to use a card reader to DL photos from my real camera occasionally so I hope they don’t kill it off.

To make it fully waterproof - in the same way that the apple watch is waterproof.

Expect to see people snorkelling and filming the sea floor etc in the marketing video for this device.

I have a feeling that this model will be similar to the iPhone X in that it’ll be presented as showing where iPhone is going in the future.

2022 is my bet, on at least the pro Max model - which will have extra battery life, as Apple will able to fit in a bigger battery due the lack of ports.

Finally, as to the charging speed question - don’t people charge their phones overnight? And if you have phones with 18 hour or so video playback hours, surely that’s enough?

At this point the "portless" talk for next year is all rumor/conjecture. Not putting too much stock in it. That said:

Unpopular Opinion: I WANT a portless phone. To me, the port is the biggest security liability of the iPhone. I'd pay extra for a model without a port.

Having an opinion is not amateurish, you might not agree but to call it amateurish is uncalled for.
I was just highlighting some changes or features removed by Apple over the years.

I personally hope it doesn't happen.
Yes it is amateurish to form an opinion without any of the relevant facts to back it up. It's literally the definition. Oh what the internet has convinced some people of.

Come on everybody, you’re not in the Apple spirit of things. A port-less phone just means you’ll have to overpay for wireless chargers and wireless Air Pods. Don’t be upset, Apple is counting on you to toe the line and get with the program. After all, USB chargers add to environmental waste, but MagSafe chargers are, well, expensive, so Apple approves! Giving the user options is just not the correct thinking here.

True, not producing anything is best for the environment. A few MacSafe chargers are probably less of an environmental impact than shipping a charger with every iPhone.

I think it does make sense and it has been done before. HP/Palm had done it back in 2011 with the Veer (the smaller version of the Pre). There were no ports on the phone. USB and Audio were done with magnetic attachments. Granted, this was barely out before HP shut down all of the WebOS hardware products, but it still existed and thought of back in 2011. This had wireless charging and no ports. I think Apple can do it with the iPhone and use a MagSafe/Smart Connector combo as a means for USB connectivity if needed. Again, very little is requiring you to connect to the iPhone and the comments about CarPlay, companies have created a dongle to bring Wireless CarPlay support to a car that does not currently have it.

Not happening next year but it's happening. Apple just don't care.
My favorite fake Henry Ford quote:

They have to include some sort of smart connector with fast data transfer. No way their going to use ancient/slow Wi-Fi data transfer for data backup. Being Apple, maybe they force iCloud upgrades 🤔.
WiFi can be faster than usb 2. ymmv depending on location.

So helpful. I have a 2020 and it's still USB CarPlay.
A year ago when my car awaiting part I had 2 replacements. One with wired CarPlay. One with Wireless. I was more comfortable with wired since used to plugging phone in for charging.
my car doesn’t have CarPlay.
my phone now supports wireless charging so wirel may work.

I have a new Mercedes on order with wireless charging and wirelsss CarPlay so I have asked my dealer to check that iphone 12's will work with the wireless charging,.
If Apple do go portless with phones next year, they will have to tread carefully in light of the fact that a lot of wireless chargers don't work with the new phones. The last thing they want is to sell phones that can't be charged because of incompatibilities with certain chargers including in-car charging......unless of course their strategy will be to force people to go down the magsafe route.

It certainly doesn’t make sense to me either. It’ll put an end to plugging the device into the car and listening to music for me. This drive to turn everything wireless might be great in the boardroom but it limits a lot of consumers.

If Apple ever makes a port-less phone I would have to assume it would be a non-flagship model, maybe specialty model, something like what the SE is. The port issue goes far beyond charging and data transfer for many users. If the device has no port, that means it becomes nearly useless for music creation. Users would not be able to connect audio interfaces to the phone and therefore using it as a recording tool (which many musicians do nowadays) would be out of the question. There are various other devices that also require a Lightning or USB-C port.

Apple: "Were removing the lightning port. The 95% of you with wired carplay, please go buy this ****** Chinese product that we don't endorse. We've also worked out a deal with every car dealership in America to give you an extra $129 on your trade in towards a car with wireless carplay."

Well then don’t get the hypothetical new port less iPhone if and when it comes out. My Tesla Model 3 does not even have CarPlay and I “survive” with just using Bluetooth and a Nomad Qi charging pad with my iPhone 12 Pro.

When they go portless (which is at least a year away), I’m guessing the whole lineup won’t go portless right away. Also, if wired CarPlay is important to you, don’t upgrade until you switch cars. Also, look at the iPad lineup, there are models with lightning and modes with usb-c.

If what I heard is correct the next gen magsafe will have a NFC chip for data to replace the Lightning port as a loophole to the USB-C issue in Europe. The downside is my source also said that year gen will only consist of the box and the Iphone under eco friendly justification. Though any Qi charger will work you will need a "Magsafe +" charger for data or linking to your car... oh and a USB C to USB 2.0 dongle

Getting rid of the ports, does not necessarily mean getting rid of the ports.

I know, that sounds contradictory, but there’s absolutely no reason why they couldn’t adapt the MagSafe system to incorporate a data connection on the back of the iPhone with contacts. These could be visible, as on the iPads, or hidden under the glass as an inductive fashion.

Just because there’s no hole to stick an adapter into, doesn’t mean the same functionality cannot be implemented in a different fashion.
