At this point the "portless" talk for next year is all rumor/conjecture. Not putting too much stock in it. That said:

Unpopular Opinion: I WANT a portless phone. To me, the port is the biggest security liability of the iPhone. I'd pay extra for a model without a port.

If you want a portless iPhone so bad a flathead screwdriver goes a long way

My phone’s Lightning port is broken for a while now - I’m basically only using wireless charging ever since - and have somehow managed to survive! Sure thing, my AirPods helped

Getting rid of the ports, does not necessarily mean getting rid of the ports.

I know, that sounds contradictory, but there’s absolutely no reason why they couldn’t adapt the MagSafe system to incorporate a data connection on the back of the iPhone with contacts. These could be visible, as on the iPads, or hidden under the glass as an inductive fashion.

Just because there’s no hole to stick an adapter into, doesn’t mean the same functionality cannot be implemented in a different fashion.

That’s true but might make the iPhone thicker when trying to use it with wired head phones, especially during exercise. Not a huge fan of Apples direction sometimes as it often makes things more difficult for the user when they market it towards making life easier.

I can’t argue with that. But we’ve had decades of Apple changing standards, ports, even the underlying hardware. Removing ports, drives and so on and so on. Yet here we are, still buying their products. We always end up adapting, or moving to a different platform :D

I’ll be honest I’ve never used Apple for my computing needs apart from iPhone and iPad. My wife has used Mac’s for 20 odd years and I’ve seen her frustrations at times. One thing I’ve learned with Apple and that’s yes they do remove ports and hardware, but this just means you have to buy double the amount of adapters lol.

Had my MacBook Pro for nine years. Still works perfectly and meets all my needs. I exchanged the SATA drive three years ago for a SSD and its faster than it was when it was new

Going portless will also break Apple CarPlay. You have to be plugged in to use CarPlay.
For many cars, yes, and that's reason enough not to go portless. But that's not a requirement of CarPlay and it's not true of all manufacturers. For example, CarPlay works wirelessly with my BMW.

Wireless works for Mercedes as well. Unfortunately technology moves on and people get left behind unless they keep up. Wireless across-the-board seems to be the way the future

I hope not, for many of the reasons OP mentioned. In particular, wireless charging is bad for the environment. Apple should keep the port and let consumers decide whether or not they want to use it.

How long should they keep a port for? One year, three years, ten years? Things move on in gradual steps. There’s been rumours about Apple going port-less for a couple of years now so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone when they do. It’s gonna happen and at least it will give people a chance to prepare for it

That’s great to hear. Macs do tend to perform better for longer than PC’s from what I have seen but unfortunately I can’t use them for my job otherwise I’d make the jump.

What those ******s at Apple need is some good old fashioned competition. Androids are light years ahead because of exactly that...the only thing they've learned more recently from Apple is you can actually get away with charging $1000 or more for a phone. Praise be the captive market.

I RMA'd my Mini last week, back to Android. Enough of this nonsense.

The only thing the end-user ”wins” if this does happen is better water resistance. Can not think of anything else.

Possibly better security too, those graykey boxes won’t work on them since no lightning port.

Going portless at this stage would have me giving up Apple for good. DFU mode impossible, wireless charging is subpar with their own Magsafe, and I'm still bitter over headphone jacks gone.

Given the sheer number of iPhones out there, I would say that they should keep it until wireless charging works as well and loses no more power than wired charging.

it will likely come to pro max only first for until MagSafe charging is strong enough that it can be depended on. Apple likely will think with all day battery life one would only need to charge once and thats on your wireless charger at night

And the Pro as well I would think. My findings about MagSafe is that it works really well and charges my 12 Pro very quickly. My MagSafe charger runs very cool when charging as does my phone. I have had no issues except to reboot my phone on one occasion when for some reason, it didn't acknowledge the MagSafe charger when it clamped to the back of the phone

How does that fall in line with the topic?

Not sure. Still plenty cavities in the device hence the water resistance is unlikely to change.

What exactly are they light years ahead of exactly? Android does things better than iOS just like iOS does things better than android...

Think you will find apple can get away with charging high prices for phones not sure android can
