Well well well... I figured it out maybe. My wife said could be from because I suspended the device on Verizon? I am like you did what? She said she thought since it might take a while to get fixed she went ahead and turned off the service. We have reactivated it.... it can take up to two hours for it to be processed. She feels bad. I am hoping that's what it is.

You don't need cellular service to turn Find My on and off. If the device was working properly, you could use your Wifi connection.

Would connecting it to my MBA be an option?

You can absolutely do a factory reset using the MacBook by downloading the restore file and erasing the device, but Find My will still be turned on. However maybe if you reset it and shut it off after, it will be able to be removed using the Find My website. You can also try removing it from the devices list on the Apple ID website and on iCloud dot com. Removing it from all three might do the trick. Usually removing a device from one is enough but perhaps not anymore.

Otherwise, it's not good. Activation Lock is great for preventing theft and resale I guess but I really don't like it, especially as a buyer and seller of used Apple products. It was one thing to make sure of a clean IMEI. But now with Activation Lock you can get screwed so easily when buying used iPhones for cheap and trying to resell them. It can turn itself back on too, with an Apple ID that wasn't the most current used with the device as a bug. And now it's on everything Apple makes. iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and now Macs. It's a bear to deal with. And it's on by default.

Well the cellular thing worked or it was just blind luck. I checked the find my app and it was showing up and allowed me to both erase it and remove it from my device list. So I will call Apple again tomorrow and get it sent out.

Hopefully this will be over soon.

Yikes, that’s upsetting.

I had the first iPad Pro and loved it. Used it in my garage when I was doing a ton of work on my car. Cleaned up and threw away all the boxes and parts…guess I ended up throwing away the iPad as well because that’s the last time I ever saw it.
Bummer. I’m still rocking the original iPad Pro. The wife won’t let me upgrade.

I wonder if Apple Care+ I have will cover this.... I don't expect it to.... But very upsetting.

AppleCare+ will most certainly cover it - that’s pretty much the point of AC+ - to cover these kinds of accidents. The only situation where it won’t be covered is if it’s lost I think. Otherwise any kind of accidental damage is 100% covered by AC+.

Given that it’s bought in 2019, there’s a small chance AC+ might have expired though, unless you’re on the monthly plan.

My 2019 iPad Pro was on my cars battery while I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my car. I was on a FaceTime call with a friend who is a mechanic. I had a pry bar and flashlight in my hand. I lost my balance somehow and the 3 foot pry bar ended hitting my iPad and it went flying. I still don't know exactly what went wrong. It was in a case but well I will let the pictures do the talking. View attachment 1798816

It will cover it at an incident charge. Won’t be an issue at all.

That's the entire point of Apple Care+, to cover for accidental damage.
It sounds like you didn't do this intentionally, so... just submit a claim, pay the fee and get a new (refurbished) iPad.

What on earth were you doing with your iPad in your fireplace?
LOL. Burning it, of course! No more of that pathetic Apple crap!

No, seriously, it was when COVID had just started, and I had a makeshift office set up in the living room. I went to move to my desk and the iPP slipped out of my hands and landed on the brick of the hearth. It was truly a first world nightmare.

That said, I was truly impressed with Apple; I had dreaded the whole replacement because I use my iPP every day, but since the replacement arrived first, that wasn’t a factor. It worked out quite well.

I'm excited to hear how this ends. Hopeful AppleCare+ comes through for you on the replacement!

Good god man! If Apple won't help you, buy your replacement at Costco, so if it happens again, you can just return it. Costco will take anything back.

They have a dedicated 90 day return period for electronics though, worth a read.

In the end this of course will be covered by AC+ as that’s what it’s for.

Well after several back and forth with Apple they denied the claim. Long story short they said the damage was beyond accidental and looked like intentional act of destruction. It wasn’t. So I have to payoff 400 bucks more on a machine that’s in the landfill. Not very happy with Apple.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out, but even in your OP you said you didn't expect it to be covered. Hey, you tried and there was a chance it might. What will you do next?

Did you actually visit the Apple store?

"Looking" like an intentional act of destruction is an opinion, not fact. Besides, what possible motive could there be for "intentionally" destroying it? There's no profit motive. It's not like a person can somehow end up with more than 1 working iPad whether or not an AppleCare+ claim is made.

I would personally escalate it if I were the same situation. Email Tim Cook maybe.

Yeah, how can you tell if a broken screen is intentional or not by looking at it? They just look broken. If you didn’t try in store, I’d say try it (with a mask, of course!)
