lil more help please :D

Hey there, I want to first thank you all for contributing, this has been a very informative thread. I'm still seeing adds in Safari, Chrome, and Moviebox so I want to see if theres any step I missed. To provide a little background, I've rooted my HTC EVO and jailbroken 5-10 iDevices starting with the iPhone 4. Also built the computer I'm typing from.

Currently I'm trying to block any and all ads on my
jail broken iPad 4th gen (iOS v6.1) &
jail broken iPhone 5 (iOS v6.1)

-I've renamed /applications/AppSheet.app to AppSheet.bak via iFile
-I replaced my iOS /etc/hosts file with one from someonewhocares.org/hosts
-I have 'AdBlocker Cracked' & 'AdBlockerNetworks' installed and set to "on" for the apps listed above.
-hard reboot

Still seeing ads, any step I'm missing or something else I can try? Thanks again for any help.

That's all you can do honestly. Keep in minds you'll never be able to block 100% of your ads. You can try finding a better, more up to date hosts file and try that. I don't use that hosts file you mentioned. There are others available too like MVPHosts, which is probably the most popular and up to date hosts file on the Internet, and one of the cracked repo forums has one too. Also whenever you see ads, you can add them to your hosts file to block all ads coming from that ad provider. It's tedious but can be easily achieved. But keep on mind you'll never be 100% ad free. Hope this helps.

Also did you turn off location based iAds in location services? This helps a little bit too.

Here's a link to an updated host file as of 3/27/13http://www.dropbox.com/s/brtl9gnxbrtf0ku/hosts

Haven't had to use the ad block app from cydia since using this file. IMHO works better then the ad block app.

Sweet--thanks for this (and thanks to Bumpy for instructions). Just installed; nice to be pretty much ad free. I'm the type who gladly pays to get ad free apps, so having to deal with really intrusive popups and that in Safari gets on my nerves. This looks like it will do the trick!

It would have been nice if I had this file before I purchased Adblock lol#

do i just put this in my hosts file?

thanks!
you have to replace your old hosts file with this one (e.g. using iFile). you find it there: /etc

you may also have to rename the downloaded file to hosts (as it may be saved as hosts.txt). ps: don't forget to restart your device after replacement of this file!

Cbs & nbc

The use of the hosts file from Dropbox works wonders.

Yet I have noticed one issue that I can't seem to figure out.

Both the CBS and NBC apps are both blocked from playing any video at all now let alone any videos let alone ads.

I know from experience they both use akami servers so I think it's probably the same thing blocking both.

I have done a tcpdump to try and figure out which hosts entry is causing it, but so far I have not any luck.

i was having problems with youtube and removing adblocker completely fixed it.

if you have the latest host file you dont need adblocker - and it works much better anyway.

hope this helps.

not sure which version of the host file you may have, but here is the latest i found - i put it in my dropbox for you:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fdkafnyzh0xrovx/hosts

its from the 13th june 2013.

chances are it wont fix it since it probably has even more restrictions, but can't hurt trying.

Thanks for the latest file but still no go.

Oddly the same videos I am requesting work fine in XBMC with the "Free Cable" plugin from the device, so it's just the CBS/NBC apps are refusing to function.

i trust you've tested these apps again with the original iphone host file?

if you did and they work you know for sure that is the problem (the host file).

nothing you can do about it in that case. either you live without those apps or without the ads.

I have tested it/used said apps many of times with the original hosts file.

Like you said I guess I will have to decide one way or an other what I want to do.

What I may try, is seeing if I can make a simple script that will put the original hosts file in place when I want the apps but use the edited one otherwise.

Thanks again.

why dont you add those two sources (CBS, NBC) to an app like flipboard and watch the videos from there?

it should work ive never had any problems with flipboard....

Not sure it can work in my case cause Flipboard seems more for their news videos vs TV shows.

Nfl.com

Ive updated the hosts file with the most recent one on this thread, it works great. I did notice that now the nfl.com fantasy football no longer works (app or safari). I reverted back to the stock hosts file and it works, so I know its something in the new hosts file. Is there a way to see what its blocking so i can remove those from the hosts file? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well what I did to attempt to fix CBS/NBC apps on my end is with the ad-blocking hosts file off (stock hosts file) is run tcpdump like this:

tcpdump -s 65535 -w file.pcap

Then open it in Wireshark on my PC.

Then just took out the lines blocking whatever the app needed according to the dump.

Though that got into a headache so what I simply did was, made a script "hon" and "hoff".

So normally when just using the iPhone hon is on everything is blocked, then if an app refuses to work, I just run "hoff" and go back to the normal hosts.

Also the app "Docs" refuses to work with ads blocked, also "More" on SBSettings refused to work also but it offered to auto unblocked it's necessary parts for me.

Basic Ad Block

I've been using Basic Ad Block to manage a custom hosts file for a few months now. If you install this repo:
repo: http://cydia.myrepospace.com/basic

Then from there install Basic Ad Blocker; you will have a very light on resources wee tool that from memory, also installs an SBSettings toggle to switch out and in the host file. This is all it does, and the fellow that did all the hard work updates the host file from time to time, though I'm sure you could always edit the thing by hand if you wanted to. With this and the name change hack for iAds, that is all I do for ads on iOS, and thus far I very rarely see any - especially via Safari and the like.
Hope someone finds this useful.

Can somebody tell me how to install this? I am going to have to get rid of AdBlocker if I add a website to the blacklist for blocking e.g a forum with annoying ads it not only blocks ads but it will block me from clicking certain threads why is this?

Anyway looking for an alternative and this seems the way to go

Use iFile or ifunbox to move the downloaded file to /private/etc and replace the existing host file, make a backup from the original first!
