UK upgrade solution

Hey folks

Useful news - Jigsaw in the UK are (still) selling upgrades to CS2.3, and it includes a free upgrade to CS3 when it becomes available.

The cool thing is that the upgrades to CS2.3 are considerably cheaper than the upgrades to CS3!

For example, to upgrade my CS1 Premium to CS2.3 Premium is £399 + VAT and delivery (comes to £468.83 and £10 delivery).

I find that much more acceptable than the > £700 Adobe are asking via their online store for the CS3 upgrade.

It might not be quite as cheap as trying to get the US version of the upgrade, but it does avoid the hassle factor, import duty, VAT and other "hidden" costs (how good an exchange rate do you get via your credit card?), and the uncertainty about registration.

The other up-side is that I can start using CS2 versions of everything (and I assume the PS CS3 beta) right now, while we wait to see how long it takes for CS3 to actually get released.

I don't know how long this offer at Jigsaw is going to last, so it might be worth getting in quick.

eh? when I called adobe yesterday morning, they said that it was locked in and I would have to buy a new copy if I wanted to install it on the mac.

That's odd - I called today about this (admittedly in the UK) and there was no problem changing platforms for Studio 8 and Adobe CS 2 - although I have to upgrade to CS2.3, but this includes a free upgrade to CS3. By far the cheapest way to upgrade to CS3...

Cost of business

its the cost of business.

if they need a specific piece of software in order to run their business, then its a no brainer: you buy (or more likely upgrade) to the new software.

Besides, even a really small print shop could afford the $1000. If they can't, then they probably aren't doing the type of business (i.e. working with pros) that requires cs3.

This is debatable. If you are a very small shop who can afford to stay on the bleeding edge and doesn't depend on what the majority of the industry is using, then upgrade to CS3.

I worked in a print shop which spent millions of dollars on industrial printers, yet they skimped out on providing adequate tools to the creative department. Those people were (and likely still are) were running off of the first generation of PowerMac G4s, and the designers had piecemeal versions of Adobe products. One person might have InDesign CS, but Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10. Another person might actually have the entire CS2 Standard suite. The company wouldn't even standardized everyone with the same tools!

And then there are even the issues of having to deal with external clients. I've seen several cases where the only reason to keep Classic mode around is to support Quark 4, for those clients who STILL haven't migrated away from OS 9, or for those people who bought Quark 4 years ago but don't want to upgrade to version 6 or 7 of XPress. Same idea can apply to virtually any popular application, whether it be Quark, Word, Excel, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.

In the end, do you NEED CS3, or merely WANT it? For those with Intel-based Macs, CS3 may be more of a Need than a simple Want due to being a Universal Binary, similar to the situation of upgrading from Photoshop 6 to 7 (Mac OS X support).

It sounds a bit weired to me since CS2 premium costs $399.00 (academic price) and CS3 Design Premium is $599.00. There are $200 difference.
If it is true, it might be a great deal, but I wonder if they confused between "CS3 Design Standard" and "CS3 Design Premium"

We got the same from our UK supplier... so it's not bogus. I can't be bothered with the messing around though. After all, it's not my money I'm spending. :D

I just got my CS2.3 Design Premium upgrade thru from Jigsaw, with info on the free upgrade to CS3.

Seems genuine. I'll be calling Adobe tomorrow to ask about the upgrade (though who knows when it'll ship).

For anyone in the UK, as well as signing the petition, it might be worth contacting Watchdog (a prime time consumer complaints tv show)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and_radio/watchdog/contact_index.shtml

This is precisely the kind of thing they'd love to get their teeth into, so head on over and send them details.

The more complaints they get, the more chance there is we'll see the head of Adobe UK getting shamed live on national TV! It would also raise awareness of the issue.

Questions for Multimedia..... or anyone who knows!

Hello,

As an visual communications student i would be very interested in purchasing my very own copy of CS3 either Design or Master (fingers crossed i have enough money).

I have browsed the uk education store after reading multimedia's post on education pricing, etc, and i am now very very interested to see that the master collection is on £450 for students.

My questions are:

1. Is there any major difference between the commercial versions and the student versions of the packages in regards to 'what's in; the software ie does the student version have exactly the same features as the commercial?

2. Having read the T&Cs where it states that the student purchased versions should only be used at home by students not on institutional or commercial computers.
If i purchased the software now as a student (i finish my degree this year) and then go on to work in the commercial sector would i get in any trouble for publishing commercial (profitable) works using my student license?

Any feedback on these matters would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

We (me and a design colleague) just did the same thing here. Ordered two copies of CS2.3 Design Premium which arrived today.

Phoned Adobe and they have registered us for the free upgrade for both copies which will ship when it is released (should be end of the month, but maybe 2 week May).

Very happy about spotting that deal, we were panicking it was going to cost us around £3000 (we are a very small business of 2!), so have saved about £1100 doing it this way.

Just to add to previous posts. Those elligible for academic pricing can purchase Creative Suite 2.3 Premium now for $389.95 and order a post-upgrade to Design Premium from Adobe for $5.00. Therefore, saving $200 off Creative Suite 3.0 Design Premium.

It's a great deal!

Adobe will ship the post-upgrades in "late April."

Do you have a link to that deal? I work at a university and have not seen anything like this yet. Thanks.

Adobe is not advertising it. However, contact your academic reseller and ask about the "CS 3 post-upgrade."

More information on the policy is available at:http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_15304

You must contact Adobe Customer Service in order to process the post-upgrade. The upgrade is free, but a $5.00 shipping charge (and local taxes if in certain states) will apply.

I was told by Adobe's Customer Service today that this a limited time offer for users who purchase Creative Suite 2.3 Premium between the annoucement date and the release date of CS 3.

It's not weird if you dissect the current 2.3 Premium bundle, which includes Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Professional, Go Live, Illustrator and Dreamweaver.

Design Standard CS 3 would lack a web editing product. Therefore, Adobe has decided to offer Design Premium CS 3. It just happens to be closest bundle to what the customer originally purchased. As a bonus, the customer gets Extended and Flash.

Adobe, for once, is putting customers first.

This is an excellent deal. I hated the fact that Design Premium would cost $599. Thanks to this deal, it will hopefully cost $399, what it should have cost in the first place. :) I've already ordered CS2.3 Premium. I should be getting it any day now. I suggest anybody who's thinking about this to do it now because it will end the minute CS3 officially starts shipping which could be any day now.

Would this work for those of us that bought before the CS period (I think I bought the Design Suite with PS 7, InDesign 2, GoLive 6, etc)? If so, whom do I call to get in on this deal?

After reading about the free upgrade deal from Adobe I decided to make some calls. I called three people at Adobe from the customer support number and spoke with two educational resellers. One of these is the student store at the university where I work. The deal is if you purchase CS 2.3 Premium you can upgrade to CS 3 Design Premium for free. This works on edu and the commercial version. There are other deals like this. CS 2 Standard gets a free upgrade to CS 3 Design Standard. You have to purchase between March 27 until June 25th. So I bought the CS 2.3 Premium for $399 and I will get a free upgrade to CS 3 Design Premium that would have cost $599. The even cooler part is the upgrade will not be edu so I get the commercial version of CS 3. Wow. There is conflicting information on the Adobe site about edu software being used for commercial purposes. The main page for the edu store says no edu software for commercial use but the FAQ says you can. So this deal gets rid of that conflict. The upgrade PDF from Adobe does not mention anything about CS just CS2 so no free upgrades from CS.

I made a bunch of calls today and did this deal today. Thanks for the heads up. I bought CS 2.3 Premium and will get the free upgrade to the non edu version of CS3 Design Premium for S/H. This costs me $399 instead of $599 and gets rid of the EDU software. This was because there is no upgrade to EDU from EDU. Just a straight upgrade from EDU. Thanks again!!

Thank you all for the information! I just bought CS 2.3 Premium from Journeyed.com for only $379. What a sweet deal for a $5 upgrade for CS3 Premium! Thanks again to all of you!!

Does anyone know if this is the same in the uk?

I am a student graduating in a few months and need to buy some legit software, the student price is fantastic but i am confused as to whether or not i can use it after i graduate?

Answers on a postcard!

I would encourage everyone thinking about the free upgrade deal where you purchase CS 2.3 Premium for example and then get a free upgrade to CS 3 Design Premium. I went to our student store on campus where I work and picked up my copy of CS 2.3 Premium. I had them order it a few days ago. I was told this was one of 60 copies that particular distributor had in stock. So if that is true supplies may be dwindling in other places. I am calling Adobe today to get the upgrade processed. :D

I also pulled this one. Awesome deal! I ordered the upgrade but I am confused about faxing the receipt.
What info do we need to include?
(I'm assuming customer id and order id.)
Fill us in if you have any more info.

thanks

Adobe CS3 for Mac was leaked last Friday, if you know where to look for it.

I'm surprised since not that much software escapes from production nowadays before going on sale. Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to launch it before actually selling it :(
