I have just ordered a refurb 2013 rMBP and currently do not own any Adobe software. I was planning on purchasing the $10 a month PS and LR. My only hang up is that on some forums people seem to feel that this is a ripoff and dislike the Adobe subscription model.

To me $120 a year seems great, I have no student pricing. PS alone runs hundreds of $$ and LR5 is $150. I feel like I'm missing something.

To those who don't like the subscription plan, why? I'm not trying to pick a fight either just want to make the best choice before I purchase software.

The Creative Cloud subscription is fine.

Some disadavantages are:

- Not owning the software (having to connect to the net every 30-days)
- Losing all things you saved in the CC if you ever discontinue
- Being forced to buy Lr and Ps even if you just need one of them

Other than that it is a great deal with free upgrades and suncing between devices for a very resonable price. Go for it :)

I love my subscription. Works great when I have a huge shoot of 500+ pictures, I can have them sync to Lightroom for iPad and flag the keepers without sitting in front of a computer.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds great to me and I am sure I'll love it. I have always used PS at school but never been able to afford for myself.

Would definitely recommend it. I started off on that deal and since switched to the full Creative Cloud deal and if you can afford it it's more than worth the money.

You don't lose your work, if the subscription expires, in fact, in LR, you can keep using the app for most thing. The only module that won't work is the edit module. LR won't let you edit images if your subscription expired.

Thank you. Good to know!
But I think you cannot access the images in the cloud.
Or can you?

Is there a reason for PS? You can do alot only with LR. I have LR (bought one, not subsription and never get any product needing a subscription) on my mbpr and i dont need PS to do anything. Surely LR isnt a PS but quite capable still, so the question: do you really need PS?

If you like more PS, have you tried free GIMP?

For a hobbyist I see minimal need for PS. Even as a pro a lot of people get 95% of their work down in LR.

At least then you can have the option of owning it forever and having a one time investment rather than time on time to just open what you've already shot.

I still rely on PS a lot. I tried to replace it with Pixelmator but not good enough for now.

If you are actually USING this software, $10 is not much money. If you have Adobe LS/PS open 10 hours a week that i only 25 cents an hour. But ion the other hand if you use the software two hours a month this is not for you.

Most people here are waiting for Apple to release "Photos" before making a decision. I am one of them but I really don'r have high expectations. I think Photos will be aimed at iPhone users. But I want to see it.

I'd stick with just using iPhotos for a few months until we can see what Apple releases. I really hope I'm surprised.

the combination of iPhoto and Pilelmator is really powerful.

On the other hand if you do a LOT of work then LR and PS is the best combo. But PS' learning curve is very steep and it is not of use to casual users. I would ONLY buy (or rent) PS if you intend to use it maybe three days a week. LR has a less step learning curve but is still not for casual users.

iPhoto is useless.
And waiting for the Photos release will be pointless.
:apple: leaves anything even semi serious to Adobe now.

Subscriptions are the future. I have CC and MS Office subscriptions and Netflix.
All I need.

The subscription is a great deal, but less so if you don't use PS. But it is still the standard for photo editing, so it's worth learning to use, even if you only use a fraction of its capabilities. And there is more help out there for PS than any other photo editor.

Don't worry about whiners on forums. We all do it, but it really isn't a solid basis for making a decision like this. I calculated my cost for LR and such over the many many years I've used it, and the sub is still cheaper. Some folks managed to do it more cheaply, often by skipping updates, and I'm sure they aren't happy. But there are alternatives (maybe Apple will provide one, maybe free, maybe as capable, but we have no idea if they will, and when they will).

To be honest, I think the subscription model is fine. PS CC doesn't really offer much of an upgrade from CS6, so I am sticking with that for the time being. I also purchased LR 5 as standalone software so I don't have to rely on the subscription model (yet).

That being said, I would not be opposed to moving to the subscription model if the next version of PS offers significant upgrades to CS6.

Just another happy user of the LR/PS $10 month sub. I switched to LR from Aperture after the trial. Some will argue that if you don't use PS its not worth it. I'm not a heavy PS user, but even if LR can do it (whatever edit you need), PS does it better. I still do basic edits in LR, but sometimes you need heavy lifting - and for that PS is worth having.

I have used PS heavily in school so I feel like I need it, but I have never used LR and it sounds like it will do a lot. I do occasionally shoot a time lapse that I need PS for, or other software and I do really like layering and putting together HDRs from bracketed shots. Either way they come together wether I need both or not and for a dollar more a month than netflix it is a steal! Thanks for the input everyone and happy new years.

Yes but don't be suprised to see those subscriptions climb when the next versions come out. Of course by then people will be hooked, and won't notice thier $10 a month has become $15. But you will have no choice by then.
Personally I'll stick with LR5, then when 6 becomes available see if you can buy it outright or not (but I doubt it).

They give PS to schools??? HOW CAN MY SCHOOL GET A COPY? The best deal I've found is an education discount, never anything like a free site license.

Seriously, you guys are complaining about $10. This is professional level software that is intended for use in a business. Because it is rental, not capital you can deduct the full amount. I think people forget this when figuring the cost to rent vs. buy.

You can't deduct any amount unless you are self employed. I am not.

You mean does Ronald always throw an awesome birthday party or does the :apple:fanboy always make good points? ;)

:apple: fanboy always makes good points of course!

Mr McDonalds party's aren't all that to be honest. We went to his farm, but all the animals were missing!

Adobe subscription question.

it doesnt matter how pro the software is, if you dont need it. i have ps on my win laptop and lightroom on my mbpr. and because im not a graphic designer etc., all i need to do to my photos can be done it in lightroom too. paying 10 us dollars (here in europe were i am it is 16 us dollars) what they are asking it for now, would costs in a year the same amount that buying the lightroom. after a year you either have it, if you bought it and if you didnt, you just dont have anything.

Edit. Removed some wrong info...

But that's not a long-term solution either, it'll just be a matter of time until you need RAW support for a new camera model or LR5 stops working with the version of OS X du jour. Either you accept that you'll pay for a subscription or look for another solution. It's not a coincidence that there are alternatives to several Adobe products that have bubbled up (e. g. Serif's Affinity as a replacement for Illustrator).
