Memory compression, as I understand it, uses a processor core. The new mini has two; wouldn’t it make more sense then to give the system the 16GB of memory?

Also, I’ve read that TRIM is only supported on Apple’s own SSD’s under Yosemite; so what happens when a user DIY’s a SSD in a 2012 mini?!? Wouldn’t it be better then to get a 2014 mini w/ Fusion instead?

Furthermore, disabling kext signing isn’t a good solution, because it’s global and is a huge security risk.

For all of these reasons, I still feel getting a 2014 mini w/ Fusion/16gb of memory to be the best choice. The i7 would also be nice addition, if affordable.

I apologize for this off-topic post. Maybe I should’ve started a new thread; but I like to learn - I’ve already learned that the mobil i5/i7 have hyper-threading; something which I didn’t know before.

Anyway, OP, I’m curious to know what iMac you’re getting; or are you getting a mini?

-J.

Most seem pretty content with having the SSD manage itself and living without TRIM. However, you make a good argument especially as it saves opening up the machine.

Upgrade Mac Mini (2010)?

Hey guys, didn't want to start a new thread. I just received a mac mini (mid 2010) 2.4ghz 2gb Ram and 320gb HD. Is upgrading it really worth it? I plan to use the machine to browse the web (forums and shopping), use Word to create documents, (i may install kodi but I figure that would certainly require an upgrade), and sync my ipad/iphone.

It seems like the ram is so easily upgradeable that it's almost a crime not to. But do you guys think upgrading both the RAM and HD is necessary (minus the kodi thing)? I'm not savvy in this area so opinions would be great. Thanks in advance.

How does the mini run? Does it do what you want it to do?
Have you checked the activity monitor?

Thanks for responding. The unit is with my brother. He tested out for me and says it seems to run fine, no spinning wheel, but that's because it's pretty much stock right now. I won't have the unit for a few more days. I'll be sure to check the activity monitor.

If it does what you want it to, then there is no need for upgrades.
While an ssd will always make everything more responsive, the upgrade itself is quite difficult to perform for the average customer.
