Gen 1 IPP owner here, I have a feeling this could be a considerable update, at least on the surface. It seems like with each year we break to the forums thinking this could be the year that the iPad gets a much needed change, and then it never happens. This year feels slightly different as there have been plenty of rumors in regards to welcomed change. (Display, possibly USB-C connectivity, etc...)

The downside to all of this is that I still feel the device will be hindered by iOS. This years update to iOS was strictly performance based, and while that means a new iPad with better internals will make the device fly, it will still face the same limitations as to what the device is truly capable of. Obviously time will tell, but I feel like until iOS receives an overhaul the iPad will always face limitations on what the device could truly be capable of.

I guess I'm "cheap" in Apple's eyes since this month I only went with the iPhone 8 and the aluminum (GPS only) Series 4 Watch. I still haven't decided what I'll do iPad wise yet, but I will definitely consider upgrading from my current 9.7" Pro depending on what they show us here next month.

I like new things, and wish I could go onto the upgrade program, but don't like the idea of leasing either. If they made a program where you bought it outright and then had the option to upgrade it each year for a reasonable fee, I'd be all over it.

It does. Sell your phone to Apple and put that gift card towards buying a new phone outright.

My Xs Nax and SSSB watch arrive on Friday and I sold my 10.5” pro last Wednesday in anticipation of the new iPads. Really miss it so hoping they will announce the new models in October
similar situation here - far too a good offer on my iPad Pro to not sell it - will be checking release info constantly until the new one is out - its in use every day, almost as much as my phone

Do you know the price difference between the trade in value of last year's X and this year's model by any chance? I actually have a 7 plus and they offer very little for one of those. If the difference is $100 or $150, that's a good deal, but I've got feeling it's much, much bigger.

I'm just curious as I'm not actually planning to do that myself (don't have the last model) but in the future would love to get a new phone each year for trading in my last one (in immaculate condition) and paying a nominal fee.

Update
I just checked myself - an X is worth $525 in trade back. So people who paid $1000 last year, need $475 plus the price difference of the new one. For me, that's not as good a deal as the leasing version where you can upgrade each year. It's a shame they seem to want to encourage people to lease rather than pay for the phone outright.

I stuck with 64, but the last monthly installments I made were for the 8+...so it's still a big jump.

I went with 256gb, but I got the regular AC+. I have never lost or gotten a phone stolen. So I don't need that.

Sell on Swappa for $800ish.

I went the opposite. Thought about the Max, but decided on keeping the 256GB iPhone X that I picked up at a good price about 2-3 months ago, switched over from my 7+ that had soon to be expiring AC+ and was able to sell it for a price that I was pretty happy with.

Just recently found a really good deal on a 12.9 iPP 2nd gen (512GB cellular model). I had the first gen 12.9 for a long time (since Jan. 2016), but switched to the 10.5 at the end of last year. Missed the bigger size of the 12.9 though and got rid of the 10.5 awhile back. After going without an iPad for awhile, I'm glad to have the 12.9 again. Plus I still had my old 12.9 Smart Cover to use with it.

I quoted a post about someone wanting to pay a fee to upgrade each year. The only way to do that is to sell your phone and then use that money towards the new one. Apple’s trade in value is essentially an upgrade fee.

What kind of “nominal” fee are you looking for?

Aside from slower battery life, I've noticed no real performance degradation on my 2015 iPad Pro 12.9." I have plenty of storage space. I just upgraded to the new iPhone XS MAX, which I believe will take up some of my iPad tasks (such as movies) while traveling. Finally, I may be buying a new Macbook this year if Apple delivers on a nice, 13" Macbook in a new form factor. Given all of this, upgrading the iPad seems low priority. Thoughts?

I kept my iPhone X and will be getting a new iPad Pro when they come out. I find the iPad Pro to be a better deal than buying the newest MacBook Pro. Performance wise, the iPad Pro 2 performs on par with base model MacBook pros. I feel productivity is finally getting to a point where there is negligible difference between IPad and Macbook. I expect geekbench to be around 1400-1500 which will put it at around 30-40% better than iPad Pro 2.

A fair one.

If you lease your phone, you're only expected to the pay the cost of the phone plus AC and when it's paid off, you can upgrade quite painlessly, paying a slightly higher fee for the next model. Apple's trade in value is pretty low and does seem to suggest that they want people to lease only.

If the leasing people could only get an upgrade if they paid an additional lump sum of $400 each time, for example, I doubt they'd want to. If the people who pay for their phones outright want to upgrade each year, they have to bypass Apple (representing the easiest route) because of the low trade in value and instead sell privately to get a more reasonable return.

I've never done either, but it seems a bit biased towards those who don't pay in full in the beginning.

I'd be curious to know how X owners feel about the trade in value Apple have put on their phones and whether they think it's a good deal or not.

I just checked out the iPhone forum (where this discussion would fit in well) and there are strong feelings on both sides as to whether people think the trade in price is a fair deal or not. For those curious about it:

I'm on the complete opposite spectrum lol.
My iPhone 7 Plus is working just as good now as it did on launch day. My iPad Pro 10.5 hasn't changed either. The only thing the phones since X was released has that I can't have is the dang animoji.

I’m the complete opposite. My X from last year will suite me fine but I really want to replace my 9.7 iPad Pro with a 12.7 iPad Pro. Still on the fence whether I really want to wait or just get the current model out now.
Don’t think need to wait that long to see what is introduced then can get current or new.

I agree. If I could run a vagrant vm and vs code on an iPad Pro, I’d probably never go back to a MacBook again.

I pay monthly for my phone, so I am not in the same boat exactly. I'll sell my 10.5 and replace it with the new Pro when it comes out. It'll probably cost me $200 to upgrade this year.

I know they haven’t been announced yet, but based on the rumors that the 10.5” will roughly stay the same physical size but increase the screen to 11” due to smaller bezels, and the 12.9” will stay 12.9” but shrink the bezels making it physically smaller....do you know which of those two iPad pros you would choose?

I will likely stay with the 11 inch. The 12.9 is very nice, but they would need to significantly reduce the overall size and weight. I need the best combination of mobile and desk use, which the 10.5 has done a great job with.

Yeah, i’ll Probably go with the 11” iPad Pro as well. Wish Apple would update the iPad mini with an 8.5” screen, slimmer bezels & pencil support. That would be the ultimate travel iPad imho. But I don’t think that will ever happen.

Not skipping but will be selling my iPad Pro and try to recoup some of the cost towards the new iPad

Probably good timing now before any news has leaked. Smart. Although the resale value shouldn’t dip too much after they’re announced.

Agree. Unlike this years “s” iPhone update, the iPad Pro update is going to be a major redesign. Not just physically, but under the hood as well. As far as iOS limitations, I dunno. That’s changing too. Adobe plans to announce a FULL version of photoshop for the iPad in 2019. I am really looking forward to this next iPad update. Hopefully in a few weeks.

Have been using my 10.1 less and less since the iPhone was delivered.

Can’t tell until I see what apple releases next month.

Let me just say this, if they offer a 4K screen on the iPad...i don’t think I will be able to resist.

Time will tell. It’s hard to take  serious about iPad being a laptop replacement when there are so many limitations in place. I normally start projects on my iPad and finish them on my MacBook through iCloud Drive. The redesign will be welcomed for sure, but I would like to see what this device could truly be capable of.
