Hi guys, after upgrade to iOS11, I have the problem again. Resetted AirPods 3 times already, unlike with iOS 10, it doesn't help anymore. =(

Not sure what the issue is? Ringer and audio playback volumes are independent, as well as speaker and headphones settings. Turn your ringer down, leave your volume up.

It’s user error.

But then when you stop using Airpods, your ringer volume is too low for the speaker.

There needs to be independent ringer volume settings for the Airpods & Speaker, that auto-set when each output is in use.

I do agree that very often users just don't know things and I am ready to accept my mistakes because I want to learn.

But as Ralfi noted above, I am not wrong this time: if I drop down the ringer volume, not only it won't blow my ears via AirPods anymore, but also i won't hear my iPhone ringing when I am not wearing AirPods. I want that every sound which comes via AirPods would use Headset volume settings, and I want Ringer volume only affecting Ringer sound from Ringer loudspeaker.

Update: since the new iOs 11.0.2 update became available, i decided to re-try the recipe https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/airpods-and-alert-volume.2024420/#post-24770299 of user RadioGaGa1984. It did not work for me the 3 last times that I tried. But this time - voila! Some more details: after forgetting and re-connection of AirPods, I had somehow my custom message sound replaced with standard one. It was the standard message alert tone which came through on AirPods Headset's loudness. Then, I replaced the standard sound with mu custom sound - and it also did not sound at maximal loudness of Ringer Loudspeaker.

Seems this is some kind of bug withour guaranteed reproduction. I decided not to update to iOs 11.0.2 to enjoy a few weeks of my AirPods, because after last update I could only use them occasionally for conf-calls and had to take them off right after the call is over to save my ears.

Not sure what to say. I’m sure you know what you’re doing, and are having some software bug.

That being said, I haven’t been able to reproduce it myself. My volumes work as described.

This is really very easy to replicate.

1. Unlock your iPhone
2. Make sure your phone is NOT on silent
3. Open Control centre, put your volume all the way up
4. Open Settings > Sounds, put your Ringer/Alert volume all the way up
5. Turn off "Change with buttons"
6. Connect your AirPods and put them in your ears
7. Play a YouTube or Instagram video or something, adjust volume with the buttons on the side of your phone so that it's comfortable. Even make a phone call or listen to music at an appropriate/comfortable volume.
8. Turn off music/videos and close your apps
8. Put your phone in your pocket
10. When you receive a phone call or a text message, the ring or notification will be at full volume and will blow your head off

It's very user unfriendly and seems like a mistake to me.

Because if you don't want this to happen, you have to go into Settings > Sounds and turn the ringer/alert volume down. But if you forget you have done this, then when you put your AirPods away and your phone rings the ringer is going to be very quiet and too bad if your phone is in another room or something - you won't hear it.

It means every time you connect or disconnect your AirPods you have to remember to also change the ringer and alert volume, or else risk bursting an ear drum (with AirPods in) or missing a phone call/text (when you put the AirPods away).

Now complete the above steps again, but this time plug in Apple's standard cord headphones. You'll notice a different result in terms of notification volume.

It appears that every user of Airpods has this 'Loud Message Alert Sound'. :(
I wanted to check: did anyone report to Apple Support? Any feedback?
This bug is really hurting me every day.

I just now talked to to Apple Support , they told me to send feedback . It seems that people are not reporting this problem ! They are going to get back to me and I'll post here if a solution is found .

I sent feedback and urge everyone to do the same . Here is the link the tech advisor sent me to do so :

I also rang Apple support today and they also directed me to the feedback form after I gave them steps to replicate the issue.

That's when I stumbled across this thread, as well as some others including on the Apple discussion forums.

I've actually tried with my old EarPods and Beat X and the problem is the same . I guess I never had a call or notification when using them before .

Perhaps this problem has arisen because people wear AirPods in a different way than how they wear headphones? I admit that I've often got my AirPods in when I'm not listening to anything at all.

If so, as AirPods become more widely adopted, I'm sure more people will have this complaint.

I saw your post on another tread and was wondering... has that volume issue been always there or is it new with iOS 11 ?
I've only had my AirPods a couple of days .

It's been happening since this thread was created - December 2016.

People need to report this.

My alert tone's even more ear piercing than the default one & it's been really jolting me whenever it comes through. I've had to slightly lower my main volume to muzzle the sound, which is fine as the phone's always on me, but Apple really need to add the logical independent alert tone volume for Airpod usage.

Ooops , I hadn't look when the tread started ....

I've reported it with the case # as soon as Apple Support sent it . The tech I spoke to said I should do so .

I also have this issue since ios11. On iOS 10 the ringer volume would match the audio volume I had set with my AirPods. Now if somebody rings me the volume is loud as I like to keep my ringer full volume so I can hear the phone when not using AirPods. It is so annoying
