After charging mine and checking in the morning it was 100% both airpods and case 97%.

My conclusions are if you open the case to check battery life after a full charge. That is it. You are done. After i checked twice my battery is just draining now. And i do not get why because after 11 hours they only dropped 3 percent in the case. And now i'm on like 81%

This is what I am thinking. Part of me thinks that this is how the case is meant to operate and that the Airpods are meant to be behaving like this. 24 hours of battery life in the case might just mean that you have to charge the case every day.

I've wondered this as well but there are a few flaws: 1) I haven't seen a single reputable reviewer who's mentioned that the poor standby
Haven't replied for a while, but have been testing a few scenarios over multiple days to get a better idea of battery life.

I have 3 sets of AirPods right now: AirPods 1, 2 and 3 I'll refer to them as.

Original multi day test of AirPods 1 and 2, without being used at all - just paired, full charge and then sitting in the case:
  • AirPods 1: connected to my iPhone (and a total of 7 devices) - case battery drained about 10% per day
  • AirPods 2: connected to my wife's iPhone (total of 3 devices) - case battery drained about 5% per day
I swapped the AirPods with my wife and I. Fully reset them, and forgot them from all of our devices. Paired and fully charged them 6.5 days ago, and let them sit unused:
  • AirPods 2: connected to my iPhone (total of 7 devices) - case battery drained close to 10% per day
  • AirPods 1: connected to my wife's iPhone (total of 3 devices) - case battery drained 4% per day (It's been nearly a week since charging and the battery is at 74% which seems decent)

Now, AirPods 3 - I have used these in addition to the other two sets, casual use trying to get an idea of battery life. Recently I tried something different. I forgot them from my iPhone, and reset them to default. Didn't pair them at all with any iPhones or other devices. Gave them full charge and let them sit. After 2 full days of sitting idle, not paired, battery life is 100% case and 100% AirPods (I paired them to check the battery level, then unpaired them and will check again in 2 days).

I really think something unintentional is happening when they're in the case. We've seen when the case is closed that bluetooth communication to the iPhone is stopped. But wonder if they're still doing something else and if it's related at all to how many devices they're paired with.

Could the difference in the results of testing between you and your wife be due to differences in your proximity to the Airpods. E.g. During the test in which your wife's AirPods had 74% after a week, was she (specifically her iPhone) out of range of the Airpods for prolonged periods. There are some reports of proximity affecting rate of drain.

Great report though, thanks. All pointing to software/firmware problems.

I tried to avoid that as much as possible actually. I kept both our AirPods on a shelf in the same room while not in use. We both have very similar work schedules too. Basically a monday to sunday test as well.

Still though, I think back to how while in the case they aren't actually communicating with the iPhone so proximity shouldn't be an issue. Who knows though. I find it interesting that whichever set of AirPods are paired to my account (with double the number of paired devices) ends up with double the standby battery drain.

I've been keeping track of mine over the past three days. The level that the case drops is hugely varied. Sometimes it dropped quite a bit. Sometimes hardly at all (and I mean with the AirPods fully charged.)

Crucially though, ignoring the weird figures reported by the battery. I am actually on track to get close to the claimed 24hours of playback.

Here's my chart for anyone who might be interested. The AirPods and case were both charged initially to 100% and since then only the battery in the case has been used to charge the AirPods. The case has not been recharged at any point since the initial charge.

I'm afraid what you are seeing here is a little bit par for the course in current tech writing. Very little, if any of the tech websites are much more than mere PR channels for the manufactureres I think.

Instead of providing real, in depth usage experiences they just repeat some specs. But I guess that still gets them their clicks...

Been a while, but it's been my break from work. So been having some family time.

Though, at the weekend I did have my Genius Bar appointment. They had DoA stock, and switched them out there and then for me. So I am on my 3rd set, so far. Left them at home for 9 hours untouched today after a full charge I was out shopping with the better half. They are on 94% when I returned.

I think I am consigned to accept that this is a software issue, that hopefully Apple will resolve, in the meantime it may the case that if you want to travel with them, you just need to unpair them while travelling. Hopefully, Apple are quite quick with this fix though. In the mean time I am just going to enjoy my AirPods, and keep an eye on how long they last. As after £160, 3 weeks of monitoring, and 3 Genius Bar visits. I want to enjoy them. And, they really are quite a wonderful piece of tech to enjoy.

The problem is that many reviewers are using test ones. They will be reviewing multiple products, and won't be leaving them sat there, or spending a few days looking at their standby life.

Add in the fact that they will probably have to return their Press samples, they may not have that opportunity either.

I'm guessing Apple will make a fix for this, but not say anything about it in the update notes.

While I do agree that opinions on many tech sites should be taken with a grain of salt, if not ignored completely. I tend to read them just to glean some information on products, I'm not usually interested in their opinions.
There does exist the possibility that some of them, certainly not all I suspect, but some may not have had any issues with their battery life. Indeed if I were a reviewer I'd be praising the battery as I'm on track to get at leat close to the claimed 24 hours of playback from a single charge.

Monitoring the battery level and it's discharge rate has shown some wildly varied drops. From quite a large percentage, to barely any at all. So what would there be to complain about? That some of the numbers seem strange at times? But they still manage to perform as advertised.

Maybe these "professional" reviewers should spend some time on forums before they finish their reviews and gather information from more sources. If I were basing a review solely on my own AirPods I would have no idea, or suspicion, that some may be experiencing battery issues. So they could at least mention that there have been reports by others of just that.

Anyway that's partly why I ignore some reviewers, they could do further research into the products. Although I suspect that some of them get their palms greased by reps. It's just a feeling I get from reading their opinions on different products.

It's also why my own website, which is obviously primarily focussed on my app development (as it should be) is going to have a few changes (it's a bit of a mess just now as I'm in the process of changing it.) But I'm resurrecting my blog and I intend to offer up my own unbiased, independent opinions on products as well as the tech world in general. Along with offering help and advice articles.
No I'm not a professional writer as you'll tell from reading my posts. But it's just me waffling on with real information. It's not a money making scheme, no adverts, no sponsorships and certainly no backhanders from companies. If something deserves praise it will get it, if there's problems, they will be mentioned.

I received mine from launch stock on Dec. 19th, ordered in first 5 minutes that they went live in Apple Store app. No battery issues here whatsoever. Had the case/AirPods fully charged this past Monday, didn't use them while working this week, and case was at 87% when I went to use them Saturday to work out. Very happy with these. Great for the gym too.

sucks to hear some people are having faulty AirPods, when production kicks up some hiccups happen. mine have been on standby for the last 2 days and i checked about 5 mins ago before i go out and its at 79%

Haven't posted in awhile but these things continue to baffle me. Those of you that have been following know I have had my fair share of battery issues. Well... had everything fully charged and used them for about 3 hours last night. Pods were at 53% after and case still at 100%. Put the pods in to charge overnight and this morning they were at 100% with the case at 91%. Just checked probably 10 hours later and the case is still at 87%. Previously it would be around 75%. This is a great improvement! It may be too short of a duration to hope it will be the new norm but I was happy to see improvement.

I ordered another pair that will arrive tomorrow (will end up giving a set to my wife) and will report back on their battery behavior once I have been able to use/charge them for a bit.

No matter the outcome, I would like to thank the fellow posters here for all of the analysis and comments! It's refreshing to see that people can still have a rational discussion online without it resorting to negativity and bashing.

Yeah, it gets better with some cycles. But there's still the issue!

Here's where I'm at the third time logging this thing.

All sensors turned back on (auto ear detection, double tab for Siri), and only checking the battery level when taking them out of the case to use and also when putting them back in the case after using.

Still early, but at least over the last 48 hours so far, no evidence of any high amount of standby battery consumption. Could still get a big drop in next day or so to bring the average discharge rate close to the 1% per hour my other two logging tests showed. Otherwise, this third test might show an issue with opening the case and closing it without removing the AirPods to use them? I think I'm starting to suspect a bug somewhere in that action.

Here's just a quick update to add to my previous three days worth of monitoring.

Across the three days (with just one full charge of AirPods and case at the start) I totalled just over 20 hours of playback time. Bit short of 24 but I'm not complaining.

The battery levels reported by the case weren't consistent. When the AirPods were fully charged the case would sometimes have a large drop reported, sometimes hardly any. But overall it panned out.

Last night I gave the case and AirPods their second full charge, then just left them (unplugged) and I only had a 1% drop overnight. That's been 12 hours, so again wildly different considering one of the drops I had before was 17% in just under 13 hours.

I'll probably monitor them across this charge as well out of curiosity's sake. But as they managed close to their claimed battery life despite the weird battery levels, I'm inclined to just get on with enjoying them and not worry too much of the battery level has big drops.

my experience has been-

massive battery drain, did reset, some drain, and then from last night to this morning I think it remained at 83 percent before and after,

is it possible it takes a few battery cycles for it to get its grip on battery life? maybe the reset helped too,

we'll see if it remains consistent or not,

slow battery drain wouldn't be the worst in the world, but when it started off it was bad!

I also have ear detection off, automatic pause/play was inconsistent for me taking in and out of ear, and putting in case stops music anyways, plus I like doing one ear listening sometimes,

touch still on, for pause/play

also if 10.2 silently pushes an AirPods firmware update, I'm on 10.1.1 haha

That's my bet as well. I think they are meant to search for paired devices every time you open the case by design and there's good evidence from this thread that they don't go back to sleep for a while afterwards even if you just close the case again without taking them out. Only question is, is that by design or a bug? Don't know.

I strongly suspect the bug is somewhere in the action of opening the case and closing the case without using the AirPods.

In log 1, tracking the use and case charge from 100% down to 0% the average rate of % case charge used per hour was 1.06% per hour while in standby, in the case, not being used.

I then turned the double tab function off, and turned off automatic ear detection. In log 2, also tracking the use and case charge from 100% down to 0%, the average rate of % case charge used per hour was 0.82% while in standby, in the case, not being used.

Log 1 took about 73 hours to go dead, and I used the AirPods about 5 hours.
Log 2 took about 89 hours to go dead, and I used the AirPods about 6 hours.

I'm at the 73 hour mark now of Log 3. All the sensors were turned on, and I've only been checking the case charge as I take them out of the case to use them AND when I return them to the case after using them. Nothing else is different. (also, I've never reset or repaired the AirPods)
The case is currently sitting at 75% charge, with about 3 hours use of the AirPods. That translates into a case discharge of 0.13% per hour while sitting in the case not being used.

I'll run it down to 0%, but so far this looks to have resolved the issue. I feel pretty comfortable saying after 3 days that this is vastly different results than I previously had and not just the usual battery meter variation and randomness of flat readings and big drops.

There's some unanswered questions though:
- is it enough to simply take the AirPods out of the case, then put them back to avoid this bug?
- do you have to take the Airpods out, use them briefly, then put them back to avoid this bug?
- do you have to take the Airpods out, use them until say the charge goes below 95%, then put them back to avoid this bug?

Don't know the answers to those questions. I generally use them for at least 30 minutes at a time, but would be curious to see what happens if I take them out, use them for a second or two, then put them back. Or just take them out and put them back in without using them.

Here's the logs for anyone who is curious.

With set 3. Just over an hour of playtime. But 36 hours of standby. And my case is on 70%

I think I finally have a good set.

It seems that mine drain even when I took them out of the case, connect and then put back.
I think I'll give up and just enjoy till they update it.

The reset only shows proper operation (slower discharge) until the AirPods are connected to another device (like a Mac); once that happens, the problem starts all over again. People who aren't having issues are only connecting their AirPods to their iPhone and nothing else. The bug is in the multi-device connection. Reset and only pair it with the iPhone without using it on any other device (note that there must still be a little bit of discharge since it's always polling for a signal—but it shouldn't be anywhere near the 1%/hr. that many are reporting).

How do I avoid the connection with the Mac? When I pair with the iPhone, it syncs with iCloud anyway for me

Not surprising anymore, but 4 days off charge without the AirPods being paired (just paired them now):

Really seems like something is happening after they're paired.

Curious about this too. Maybe by manually pairing the AirPods by pressing the button and going to iPhone - Bluetooth settings?

The upside though is that it seems totally fixable.

Exactly what I'm thinking. And hopefully it does happen. In the meantime though, I'm going to just these AirPods and not worry about them anymore.

That sucks. I wonder if there's any other ways. I definitely don't use my AirPods with one of those macs
