Question: When you guys have music playing and take both airpods out (R+L), the airpods pause. When you put both back in, do they automatically "turn on" and start playing music again? Just asking, because mine resume when I take one out and put that one back in, but if I take both off and then put both back on, they don't resume. Also, when I first take them out of the case and put them in, they don't play anything. Just want to know if that's supposed to be the case, or I am doing something wrong.

I'd love tap to skip track added but is this a device that can be upgraded through patches?

Wear both AirPods: no auto playback
Remove one AirPod: pause playback; resume when AirPod is put back in
Remove both AirPods (or one AirPod, if wearing only one): stop playback; no resume when AirPod(s) is / are put back in

I remember when the Apple first started with the white head phones - many folks HATED THEM and still do, but apple never went black with them ... I'd be very surprised if they ever offered them in black.

Except these aren't iPods, which were a decidedly consumer oriented product. The AirPods are a companion to the iPhone, which targets the business community in large degree, and we've already seen Apples designs for a BT headset for the original iPhone decidedly aimed at Enterprise, and have precident of it in black only. Moreover, iPods were essentially unchanged, with Apple not really introducing their current wide selection of color choices until after the iPod was in substantial decline. It makes perfect sense to offer black as a choice now. And it makes sense not to offer it initially, not knowing how well these will sell, and not knowing how well they will be able to keep up with demand initially, much less manufacturing delays. I would expect to see a black model by the next iPhone if not the Spring, though I predict that the charging case will always be white regardless of the color of the Pods themselves. in the meantime, they have a significant marketing edge, as the AirPods stand out, for better or for worse, and have an iconic look that ties them squarely with Apple. A year from now, that won't be as important a distinction as most everyone will know about AirPods.

You're right, black Airpods are not coming. Soon.

I put black adhesive thin paper on the stems of the Airpods. It minimizes the white & provides a different look.

More importantly, they will differentiate from other Airpods, especially when my wife gets hers.

They don't impede any of the functions.

I'd thought about that, but weren't sure if that'll impede reception quality?

I also thought black looked so cool, that I'd wait it out as I always get black/space-grey iPhones.

But I actually think, despite my olive complexion, the white buds blend in with my skin & the black buds would stand out more.

I'd love tap to skip track added but is this a device that can be upgraded through patches?

Initially, I'd hoped for a single tap feature to be added, but keep in mind, you're always single tapping the buds to either push them back in or check they're still there, so having a single tap function makes accidental skipping a potential annoyance (big one imo).

The 'slide finger down stem' suggestion sounds like a good one, but we may need to wait for Airpods mkII for that.

So to introduce volume controls, best way I can think of is assigning a triple-tap on one pod to decrease & triple-tap on the other pod to increase.

Now to skip tracks, I'm possibly going overboard, but assigning quad-tap on one pod to restart current track/skip back & quad-tap on the other pod to skip forward may be the most unobtrusive way to go?

Or, if we could customise things, I'd have:
• Double-tap for volume adjustments
• Triple-tap for skipping
• Quad-tap for Siri

Although, if the tap sensor area were expanded, two-finger tapping could be introduced, which would reduce the amount of taps required (certainly take out the ridiculous quad-tap wannabe-geniuses suggest)...

Realise this won't work for single Airpod use, but I'll let Apple take over from here...;)

Here
Mine arrived today (a day early!) and after a while of usage I have some comments for any interested:

  • The magnetic feel and auto paring is just as reviews state: seamless.
  • Switching between devices is easy, but not seamless. I had to select them using Control Center on the iPad.
  • Range Varies on File Type: The range using my iPhone is excellent. I can walk all over my (admitted) small house (1300 square feet) and just outside fine. Didn't test their limit, but never had an issue. However, I sync 256bit audio from iTunes to my iPhone. On my iPad Pro I have ALAC lossless. While in the same room or the next room the range is fine, but three rooms away I started getting some skipping and audio drops. The files I listen to are usually around 7-10MB in their compressed form and lossless form is usually about 3x or 4x as much (one file when from 9MB to 27MB). That's a lot more data to transfer, so range is limited. However, there really isn't any point to listening to lossless on BT headphones. That's just what happens to be on my iPad.
  • Battery life seems on par with Apple's number, though it's too early to tell.
  • Audio quality: I listened to some of my more jazz-ish base heavy music. The audio is slightly richer, but not night and day compared to the EarPods.

Overall: I'm pleased. They're exactly what Apple promised and the experience of no cable is very freeing. I can't help but think about how long I've spent untangling cords when I get out of the car and get my AirPods out or how uncomfortable the pull and tug is when you run the wire under your shirt. I'd love to exercise with these, but I won't. There also won't be the enviable snag when you're cooking and the cord catches on a cabinet or handle that forceable pulled them out of your ears or your device out of your pocket.

Got mine a couple hours ago. I'm going to be returning them.

The EarPods never fit in my ears. They would constantly fall out. My number one concern with the AirPods was that they would fall out and they do. Also, the sound constantly pauses on me. In the early stages of falling out, I guess they get far enough away that the IR sensor thinks they are out and the sound stops. If I push them back in, the sound comes back. I've activated Siri more than once when I do this as well.

I'm really bummed about this. I think these things are very cool and I'm disappointed they don't fit my ears. Wish these things weren't one size fits all. They definitely stay in better than the EarPods, but that isn't good enough. :(

I'll probably look into the Beats headphones with the W1 chip.

I am in the same boat as you.

I really wanted for them to work. I even bought some of the Earhoox and they work great. Holds them in my ears, but you would have to remove them when docking in the charger, then put it back on when removing. You get the picture. Too much hassle. I was also going to use them as a Bluetooh headset, but I can't have them fall out when I am operating on a patient, now can I. :)

Bummed.

Ugh! This is so frustrating, I love everything about the AirPods, charging case is genius, they sound great to me (I'm not an audiophile and mostly listen to podcasts) and they work great with my apple devices, plus I don't need any extra charging cables just my current lightning cable which I have at work and at home.......

There's just one issue, they won't stay in my ears! I can shove them in and they will be tight for a minute, but then they get looser and looser until they feel like they are on the verge of falling out. I have really small ears and the EarPods never worked for me, but I was hoping against hope that these would. Alas it is not to be and I'll be sticking with the jaybird freedoms and their stupid, annoying charging solution :(

Just reminded of the Junior Mint Seinfeld episode. ;)

Shame about the fit. You'd hope Apple make some foam covers that may make them accessible to more people.

Now as I've read about the battery drain issue I was wondering whether mine behave correctly.
So I've tested them from yesterday evening till this morning.
AirPods haven't been used during that time. I only opened the case for checking the status.
6:48 p.m. - 100 %
7:48 p.m. - 99 %
9:48 p.m. - 92 %
9:57 p.m. - 90 %
6:05 a.m. - 82 %
AirPods showed always 100 %.
What do you think, based on your experience?

Please note that I also experience sound quality issues with Siri that I've already raised with Apple support.
Andy

Update:
09:03 a.m. - 63 %
Without using the AirPods at all.

Update 2:
I've used my AirPods today down to level of 18% and charged them again in the case.
Case is now down to 8 %.
So I assume that my case is good for charging them once per day.

When you open the case, it causes some battery drain on all three devices. Also I suspect that there is some kind of deep power saving mode when the Pods are in the case and the case is kept closed for X hours. So if you keep the case closed and check on the battery status 24h from now, I would guess the battery percentage would be about 5% less than it is right now.

Of course it's possible that there is some bugs in the firmware or so that causes them to be in wrong power states or something like that.

Please note that I also experience sound quality issues with Siri that I've already raised with Apple support.
This I believe is a problem with iOS and Mac. I don't think any Genius can do anything about. I wrote about that in this post.

Hi Teidon,
thanks for your reply.
The case lost 8 percent between 9:57 p.m. and 6:05 a.m.
And then 19 % between 6:05 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. without doing anything.
Even without deep power saving mode that's a lot, I think.
I've already informed my Apple contact about that.

I saw that post. It explains the issue very good.
Anyway, I think that might only be true for the defective ones.
Otherwise everybody would experience the low Siri sound quality. Which seems not to be the case.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Daffie,
yes. It looks like an issue.
Anyway, it's still a great product. And I'm sure that Apple will fix everything for us.

Re: case power loss, I've just checked mine after not needing to use the AirPods for about 36 hours and I still have 76% on the case and 100% on the 'pods. So I would definitely say something is wrong with your case.

Sounds a bit extreme. I charged Airpods in case till 100% and unplugged it and left it overnight to see.

Last night: 100%
This morning: 96%

So a 4% loss overnight which equates to around 8% a day, which I believe is the normal.

Yea, it seems like a lot, but I had similar drain with mine. After few charge cycles and calibrating the battery the numbers the batteries report seems okay for me. Give it a couple more days and keep using and charging them. If it still keeps doing that, it's either a firmware issue which Apple hopefully can fix or the battery is actually broken.

I am pretty sure everyone has the same issue. Just that many people don't use Siri or something.

But if someone indeed has good sound quality when the microphone is active, it would be interesting to know what firmware version their AirPods have. Can be seen on Macs in Apple menu -> About this Mac -> System report -> Bluetooth -> somewhere under your AirPods. Mine seems to be "0x0331".

What's happening is that when the microphone is active, macOS is switching from the A2DP profile to the HFP one (i.e. from headphone to handsfree). HFP only supports "speech" quality audio at 8Khz mono

This is something I've seen on every bluetooth headset / headphones with microphone I've ever used on my Mac (including my AirPods) so it looks like a limitation / feature of macOS rather than anything specific to the AirPods

Sure. I'll monitor the batteries.

My firmware is 3.3.1.
You can also check via iOS if AirPods are connected. In the german version it's in 'Einstellungen/Allgemein/Info/AirPods'.
So it should be something like 'Settings/Common/Info/AirPods'.
