pretty sure there are a lot more people that think Airpods look more ridiculous than BeatsX.

In the short term, yes, but that's simply because we've conditioned ourselves into seeing wires around people ears/head as the norm.

Stand back, and neither is more ridiculous than the other. In fact, there's a good argument that the AirPods look less ridiculous by virtue of them being much smaller. They look obtrusive now because they're new, but if an alien landed tomorrow oblivious to all ear/headphone wearing behaviour, they'd likely find the AirPods more unobtrusive.

If they find time between the probing and munching on our brain proteins of course.

Given your parameters what is not an annoyance now will be later, trust me. You have the new toy syndrome.
I've had mine since 12/21 and I don't feel any annoyance with them at all. But then again I ride the train everyday underground with the stock apple earphones and have gotten used to the outside noise.

I'll probably regret it when I'm old and gray and yelling at the kids to talk louder because I can't hear them.

I was a bit skeptic about the AirPods, but after having spent the last few days with them I can honestly say that I haven't regretted purchasing them at all. I just can't believe how easy they're to use and the quality of the sound to me is fine.

Of course, these don't replace my QC35s when I'm on the plane or on the train, but I use them at work when I don't want to entirely block out the world.

I never thought I'd like the AirPods, but since getting them I love them! It's just like a cloud of music following you around! no weight of headphones or cables, no yanking the cables, collar doesn't catch the cable notches, no rubbing noise from the cables, free head/body/arm movements, doesn't drop even if I shake my head somehow. It really is just a cloud of music following me around.

I just received a pair of Beats X as well as AirPods ... was really looking forward to the Beats X (I like isolation - living in Tokyo means lots of noise) but I have to say it's the AirPods that have really blown me away. Not so much the sound quality (although it's good, the lack of isolation is annoying) but it feels like I'm in the future when I wear them. Sounds dumb, but wow - being completely wireless is AWESOME.

Sorry for the pointless rant, just thought I'd share. These things are awesome. If you're on the fence, go ahead and take the plunge. They're amazing.
Get some EarSkinz and you'll get some decent isolation and increased volume... but you lose tap and sensor functions until they actually make some EarSkinz with the proper cut outs.

I looked at those but actually the biggest annoyance for me would be that they don't fit in the case with the sleeves on ... :(

Anyway, a couple of weeks later and I am still blown away by these things. THIS is Apple at its best: a product that really feels "magical." I'm actually tempted to return the BeatsXs because I find myself using the AirPods 95% of the time. I absolutely love them!

I agree. Great product. Only thing I dislike is the horrible sound isolation. I was at a Panera Bread today and had to crank up the volume much louder than I preferred just to even hear what I was listening to. That's my only knock on them. Otherwise they're wonderful.

That's the main thing keeping me from getting them. I'm terrified of damaging my hearing, so I try to stick to isolating headphones.

Forget it, you will get better isolation and better music quality with a pair of AKG K240s at half volume which are open back headphones. They are less than half the price and blow the Airpods to smitereens. :)

Ludicrous comparison.

I am sure he was interested in my comparison since his concern was noise isolation from the airpods and the headphones I mentioned were open back as well. And since they are much better sounding as well at half the cost, ...

Wireless buds or IEMs are more portable and better for working out. I just need them to isolate, be comfy, and stay in place. I have a nice pair of bigger cans that I use at home (HD555s).

Totally know how you feel, OP!

I've been using BT earbuds for a while - several cheapo sets. I usually go around with one side in my ear and the other side dangling.

Turning my head would often pull on the earbud.
Audio would be one channel only unless I went through the effort to switch settings.
Switching among source devices was a pain.
Poor range

Took a day or two to get use to the feel of them in the ear but fine now.

Airpods: so much just...works better.

I don't have a single complaint about these little pieces of magic. I have never worn the earpods, I've always worn Sony Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones when I'm outside, and Bose QC35's when I'm inside / on planes. Both of these have done the job up until now. I also bought the Bragi Dash late last year when I heard that the airpods had been delayed. Bad mistake! I've never managed to get these to fit my ears, and the Bluetooth is just awful! So I decided to give the airpods a try.
What a miraqle of engineering these little bits of plastic are! They fit my ears, and feel quite solidly set, no feeling of falling out, even when I shake my head to the heaviest heavy metal. Just the right amount of bass, and the volume is more than I need. I have no problems with drop-outs in the Bluetooth, and they seamlessly connect to my apple watch from my iphone.
I do hope in future versions they use some of the Bragi Dash taptic controls, ie 1 tap to play, 2 to fast forward etc.
but at the moment I am more than happy with being able to control with my watch...they were made for each other!
Well Done Apple!

Ok you guys are starting to convince me that I need to take the plunge and get a pair of AirPods. I'm coming from Jaybird BlueBuds X which sounded good and performed well, but I lost them last week (got out of the car with them sitting on my lap, and they must have fallen onto the ground - didn't realize until I was home, 2.5 hrs away from where this happened). So now I need replacements. The EarPods fit well in my ears, so seems like the AirPods would work for me. I am still on the fence regarding lack of isolation - there are times where each is appropriate - but the merits of being able to hear what's going on around me are worth thinking about, and the convenience of having no wires at all is super appealing.

I almost pulled the trigger on a pair the other day - my local Apple Store had some available for in-store pickup, but I waited about 5 minutes too long and lost out. So here I am checking stock daily again... haha.

I do plan to use these on occasional plane trips, and while many say they aren't good for that, some say they are fine. I suppose I could always bust out my wired Sony cans for that if the AirPods don't cut it.

Or if possible, select a seat as far away as you can from the engines of the plane.

Well, our next major plane trip will be on a 787 (will be our first time on that type of plane), which has whisper quiet engines, so I think I will be in good shape.

I'll be interested to know how it goes. Thanks.

I managed to grab a pair from the local Apple Store last week. Thanks iStockNow! So far I'm really enjoying them (though they are not perfect). I posted a review here:

AirPods, new owner views, problems and questions

The long flight on a 787 is this summer, but we do have a brief flight to LA in two weeks on a 737, so I'll see how that goes. I do get a partial seal in my ears with the AirPods, so there is some external noise reduction. Not like isolating earbuds, but more than zero.
