I do overseas long haul flights, 16 hours or so. QC 35 allows me to plug into the airline entertainment. Yes the are a little bulky in my bag, but well worth it.

When I have/want to communicate with the stewardess flight attendant, I simply slide the appropriate cup to the side a little so we my communicate.

My company also allows me to sit more towards the front ? of the aircraft, so space isn’t that much of an issue.

You guys really can’t spare 30 minutes to recharge them during the flight?!

For me, the extra room is quite valuable. I’m done with Bose.

Nah, everyone carries a bag anyway with iPad,chargers etc, i returned airpods bought the bose 700, way better, had the Qc35 before them too.
I would hate to be on even a 3 hour flight with AirPods stuck in my ears.

After hemming and hawing for a week, I decided to buy them. I am happy so far. I was amazed at the ANC but turned on Transparency for the drive home from the Apple store. I got a good seal with the medium buds and they were comfortable for the half hour drive home. As someone else had said, in this mode, it seems to help with my tinnitus. My Bose SS Free's served me well, but were uncomfortable laying in bed, I had to pull one out of my ear every time my wife asked me a question, and I need ANC since I will be flying more frequently.

I had the opportunity to use my new Airpods Pro on 2 Southwest Airlines flights this week. Each flight was about 2 hours each. I can provide my feedback and comparison based on having used Bose Quietcomfort 35 and Bose QuietControl 30. On flights I enjoy watching movies on my iPad Pro and need earphones that cut out the surrounding noise to make an enjoyable experience such that I can focus my attention on the movie and not strain to hear the sound.
  • Noise Cancellation
    • Bose Quietcomfort 35 - The best I've ever used for cutting out jet engine and wind noise on a flight. So I am using these as a reference for being a 10 out of 10.
    • Bose QuietControl 30 - I would rate these as 8 out of 10 for noise cancellation. They are very good and take up much less space in my carry-on laptop bag then the Quietcomfort. The only downside of these is the neck-band and inability to use them for phone calls (more details on that at the end of this review).
    • Airpods Pro - 7 out of 10. These are almost as good as the QuietControl. I can hear a little bit more of the engine and wind noise but not enough to be significant. They provide an enjoyable experience watching movies on my iPad with the volume level at about 75%. The outside noise does not impact the experience. This is the most critical use case for the Airpods Pro and airline travel. YES - these can replace the Bose for an enjoyable flight watching movies or listening to music.
    • Airpods (original) - 1 out of 10. They have no noise cancellation but I am throwing these into this category as a reference point. The original Airpods are simply un-useable for flights. Even with volume on max on my iPad I cannot enjoy a movie.
  • Battery Life
    • Bose Quietcomfort 35 - easily the best battery life by far. You can go weeks before needing to charge them
    • Bose QuietControl 30 - The battery life is much better than Airpods Pro. These are rated at 10 hours and can easily get you through most round-trip flights.
    • Airpods Pro - if your flight is over 4 hours better find a book to read after that :-( I rarely have long flights so I don't anticipate this will be issue 90% of the time I am traveling. Also you can put them into the charging case for 15min and get a quick charge. If was going on an overseas flight I would bring one of the Bose headphones with me. Great tip by farewelwilliams is when battery is getting low just use one APP while charging the other one. This is, of course, is not ideal because it defeats the noise cancellation completely (unless you can plug your other ear!).
  • Comfort
    • Bose Quietcomfort 35 - Excellent comfort in the short term but the pressure pushing on the outside of the ear does get a little annoying after about 2 hours.
    • Bose QuietControl 30 - The comfort tips are excellent and have almost no fatigue. These are number one for comfort in my book
    • Airpods Pro - not bad, but don't *push* them into your ear too much as it seems like that is what makes them get tiring in the ear. Taking them out after a 2 hour flight is an instant feeling of relief. Funny sensation is that they still feel like you are wearing them for about 10 minutes before that goes away. Overall I would say both of the Bose headphones are better for long term comfort. But they are ok for up to a few hours at a time.
  • Convenience / Portability
    • Bose Quietcomfort 35 - they take up *way* too much space in my laptop bag. They are terrible if you want to take them off for a quick conversation, like when the stewardess asks what drink you want. You have no where to put them and they don't rest well around the neck.
    • Bose QuietControl 30 - The carry case it thin and easy to slide into a laptop bag so size is ok and much better than the Quietcomfort in that regard. With the neck band they are easy to just pull out of your ears for conversations and listening.
    • Airpods Pro - easily the winner of this category for portability. And transparency mode makes it great for talking/placing your drink order! With transparency mode there is no reason to take them out of your ears to talk/listen to flight announcements.
Overall I would say the Airpods Pro are a great choice for flights. For me the biggest issue with the Bose solutions is portability (or lack thereof). The Quietcomfort are simply awesome cans - but they don't carry easily. The Quietcontrol are a great solution, but they are awful and simply unuseable for phone calls. The microphone on the Quietcontrol has a well known serious bug with amplifying background noise that is transmitted to the person you are talking with during phone calls.

If you want to carry only one set of headphones and use them for flights, phone calls, etc, and they fit in your pocket to boot, the Airpods Pro are the best jack-of-all-trades (and master of none). I am planning to use them as my only-carry headphones from this point forward.
Thank you so much! This is exactly the review I’ve been waiting for!

I travel a lot (QC35 last at most 3 days for me due to extremely high use) so I wanted something that’s light and convenient for times when I am charging the Bose. Looks like the APP will be great for that.

By the way, I appreciate the comparison to the original AirPods. The scale really allows me to visualize how the APP will compare.

I posted this in passing in a different thread but this thread more appropriate.
Used on the plane for the first time yesterday and very happy. Accomplish the same objective as my wonderful Bose QC20i earbuds, being able to listen to high dynamic range classical music without cranking up the volume to an unhealthy level. Way more convenient than the ungainly cord/battery. I am keeping the Bose for use with in flight entertainment though! (Unless there is a good product that will redirect that to my AirPods? Hmmmm)
Important to note that I don’t notice any discomfort from APP even after several hours, which is the longest I’ve gone. I don’t think recharging for a bit during the flight is a big deal, I usually take a break from the QC20i because of ear discomfort from the wings anyway.

2 more flights later I continue to use the APP in place of my Bose options. No changes in my original post/opinions. The noise cancellation specifically as it relates to airplane noise is good enough for an enjoyable flight and allows me to keep the volume level reasonable on my iPad. For me a big advantage of the APP is they are a "one-carry" solution. Not only are they great for the airplane, they are great for walking around the airport and listening to music without big cans on your head. If you want to hear things around you (announcements/etc) just enable transparency mode, there is no need to take them off. If you get a phone call, they work great too. When I am talking on the phone with the APP I usually use transparency mode because I like to be able to hear myself talking and they work great for that. No other Bose solution offers that option.

Bose over-ear's will sound much better though than the APP and still offer superior ANC.

Great review and thanks for posting. I have the Bose 700 and the APP. APP is excellent for everyday stuff and will be for flights as well. But the Bose 700 (and the Sony WH-1000 XM3's and Bose QC35) are a different level of noise cancelling. you're right to rate it 7/10 and the Bose at 10/10. However for long commutes and for flights, I have to admit, the Bose gives me an extra sense of being lost in music/movies.
You're just more immersed in it. Also Bose / Sony block out other things more, like people.

That being said, it's still such a great option. I'm being very nitpicky here - the APP's are an excellent product. I would still bring my bose with me on flights though!

I think it’s fair to say that if you need every last bit of noise cancelling, or if you want to get the absolute best sound quality from your compressed music sound files, then APP isn’t your best choice. It stands to reason that larger headphones that physically occlude the ears and with bigger drivers will offer a superior experience than any earbud solution.

But for those of us who want earbuds for portability and comfort (I can’t stand over the ears headphones), APP seems to be a well thought out and well executed product, much like the older AirPods. Namely, true wireless earbuds that are easy to switch between devices, maintain a robust connection even under conditions like biking 20+ mph, and now with APP the ability to cut out distracting background noises like HVAC and jet plane cabin roar.

Bose 700 have a button on side to change NC from 10-5-0, no need to take them off or touch your phone at all, better than tap/swipe up/swipe down/hold volume/change, lol. Also way better for calls too than the pro's.
And i just hang around neck way better than putting pro's in the case and pulling them out and putting in each ear all the time.

Yeah, all this for only $150 plus tax more. If one can afford them, over ear ANC headphones are the way to go when flying.

I had 2 flights yesterday and compared my APPs to my Bose QC 20i. Basically about the same ANC and both worked well. Music quality slightly better on the APPs. With no music playing the Bose ANC is slightly better, part of this the Bose has some white noise playing that covers bit of the sound. The Bose have served me well but selling them and keeping the APPs.

If you remember to bring the charging case supplied by Apple with you on your next flight, you will find that the AirPods Pro are actually rechargeable:

You may be an exception, but most people who fly, take a washroom break after 4 hours of sitting down. It is also highly recommended to take a stretch break and "move around as often as possible by walking in the aisles when allowed" to help prevent deep vein thrombosis.

People comparing On ear, or Over ear headphones to In ear montors shouldnt really talk about personal audio rig in general. You are comparing apples to dish washer. Completely two different form factors and philosophy, like motorcycles and SUVs. On top of that, Bose is a mediocre audio company, anyone who follows personal audio tech doesnt buy that. There are tons of better manufacturers for the same price.

For long haul flights, I put my ANC over-ear headphones on before takeoff and don't take them off until we land. I will only remove them if I need/want to talk to my seat mate for an extended period of time. APP would never work for me in that regard. Not to mention the fact that over-ears will sound much better, offer superior ANC, and will be more comfortable for longer periods of time.

I think the answer is both. Short haul (under 3.5 hours) APP Long Haul - Bose. Though I flew JFK-SEA a few weeks ago and the only reason I was glad I had my bose was for the IFE, until I remembered you could watch it on your iPad over Wifi! The way Apple could absolutely dominate this market? Stick some tech in the charging case that would enable an included lightening to headphone jack (or USB) to let you stream anything you like, via the case, straight to the buds. Oh my, that would be a game changer.

In some cases yes, in others, they get a bad rap. The fact remains that they are the best for ANC, which is why I‘ve owned two pairs.

Personally I can't stand the "hot ear" feeling that over-ear cans produce after an hour or two. They also take up way too much precious luggage space. Currently I'm using the Powerbeats Pro which gave reasonable results even without ANC and have good battery life for being fully wireless. Looking forward to trying the Airpods Pro next.

Thanks for the review, OP!

Totally agree. I hate the hot ear effect. I tend to run warm so to add heat to my already warm body annoys the crap out of me. Can’t wait to sell my Sony cans and purchase the APP.

Anyone been on some turboprop flights with the APP’s?

Not with the APPs but I know turbos aren’t much louder on the interior than city buses and the APPs definitely make a trip on Miami Dade transit pretty near silent.

Flying out of Lauderdale Sunday.

Gonna put the APPs up against my QC35 and mark the decibel level inside the cabin of the 737s.
