I have one on my new labradoodle for a couple reasons and after seeing people test them out, I’m confident that it would do its job if he ran off. Think about what happens when you lose your dog. He runs off, likely staying in your neighborhood or being picked up by a neighbor or animal control. If either happens, the neighbors will usually travel around for a bit looking for a possible match to the owner. If animal control happens to pick them up, they are in contact with a lot of people, especially once they reach the facility. At some point in either of these scenarios, the dog is highly likely to come in contact with multiple people using iPhones which should give you at least some idea of where he is or is going. Even if he is evasive to good samaritans, you will still likely receive pings as people try to catch him and get a general sense of his location. Add that with an attached phone number to the collar and you are highly likely to get your dog back.

Personally, I have a thicker leather collar on him so I was able to take a good tape and wrap it around part of the collar. You’d hardly recognize anything is there, let alone a tracking device.

Initially, I was using the iFixit hole method to attach and it actually worked well but I wanted it moving around a lot less long term.

He looks so enthused. 'You put WHAT on me? REALLY? HOW COULD YOU?'

I had a GSD that would need one, and a 500' rope. He would wander off if you weren't watching him. He was a fantastic dog, aside from that... You never know...

Haha yeah that is actually his happy face. The poodle/lab crazy hair gives him permanent RBF.

Hah! Funny... I had a Cocker Spaniel that had his furry phases. He loved the Wookie look in the winter, loved being brushed, and scratched, but in the summer would beg to be shaved down, and loved running around 'nekud' and would love on us for shaving him. His usual facial expression was something like 'Okay, human. Just try to impress me! I'll wait.' He would sit there and just stare at me. I could win a 'stare down', but he was very judgemental. ??????

He didn't seem to be RBF as much as 'I thought there would be cake'... :D:cool:

Just to cheese him off I used to blow in his face. Then he took to sticking his paw in my face. 'Stop that, it's annoying!'.???

Too funny! My mom had a small dog that would carry around a pillow almost twice as large as it was. It was hysterically funny to watch, and it was very determined, and frustrated since it was really hard for it to carry the pillow around. It got caught on furniture and rugs, etc, and it would sometimes bark at the pillow. Strange dog...

You guys do realize if you drill a hole through it, you're impacting the water resistance, right? :) Not exactly ideal for something that would be hanging around your dog's collar. :D
??‍♂️ He has played multiple times in the hose and it still beeps and shows online. I switched to attaching it to the collar itself instead of a ring so if this one ever goes out from water in the hole, I’ll just get another one. It was the first and last time I’ll put a hole through it but was worth a trial to me considering the price of holders is more expensive than the tag…

Maybe the Apple ones - the Belkin keyring holder is less than half the price of the AirTag.

OK? A hole is free. If it worked, free is free. It works but I don’t like it so I won’t be doing any more tags that way and don’t recommend it to anyone. Not for lack of water resistance but because the battery cover comes off fairly easily and I worry it’ll pop off. Was worth the potential $30 loss to me to find out if I could save on holders. Apple or 3rd party.

Working on a new AirTag Dog tag that has a cover that goes around the AirTag and will have a personalized engraved metal insert for Dog/Cat name and info on it and will be priced under $20 (Air Tag not included of course) with better quality then the options coming out costing twice as much.

Basically wanted it for my dog and felt the overcharging for materials and personalization was greatly over-inflated pricewise.

Stay Tuned

I do agree that having a family network where specific airtags can be shared with a trusted group of people is a good idea. especially if things like pets are some of the popular usages for these tags.

Potential $30 loss vs $10 for a holder… makes sense

I'm glad it still works I just didn't understand your logic :)
I wanted to try it for myself after watching ifixit do it, so I did it knowing I could potentially lose $30. Not much logic to misunderstand. You seem bothered by my decision to tinker with a $30 device…do you need me to spot you $30?

Yes but you said you tried it to try and save money on a holder, which doesn’t make sense as it was a bigger potential loss.

Anyway calm down, I’m glad it worked out. Enjoy your airtag :)

He arrived!! He flew all the way to Vancouver from Korea, then got stuck in customs for hours as there was apparently 50+ dogs on the flight so they had a lot to process. All told the poor guy was stuck in a crate for over 20 hours :(. He’s doing great though. Such a great and well behaved little guy already. Put the air tag on and it didn’t bother him at all.
