I had an opposite experience of the OP.
While my dog isn’t an escape artist and is smart enough to know where home is (she knows the location of every dog water bowl in this city, it blows my mind), this past weekend I had to go away on a business trip and last minute found a dog sitter who lives outside of the city. I didn’t have time to acclimate my dog to the new person and my dog would definitely not find her way home.
What did the AirTag on her collar give me? Peace of mind. Worth every penny.
While I was away, I couldn’t find my keys and pinged them. While there, I noticed that my dog’s location had been updated regularly. It consistently showed her where I expected her to be. I never felt compelled to call the sitter to check in on my dog because the AirTag gave me peace of mind.
The dog sitter hadn’t paired her phone to my AirTag and I hadn’t put it in Lost Mode, yet it was still using the iPhone mesh network to routinely locate the AirTag. This was super reassuring.
When arriving to pick up my dog, I tested other features such as locating my dog with the AR Find feature. I picked her AirTag up a good 100ft away, down the street, which accurately showed me the direction she was in.
As for sound pings, it makes sense that they would be limited to when close up. You really wouldnt hear it when far away so the AR distance and direction feature makes more sense.
