For those using Beta 1...

Does El Capitan run stable enough to use as an everyday operating system?

Mail works? Most programs work? That seems to be the case from what I am reading thus far, though I want to be certain before installing it.

And, yes, I am well aware one should not install a beta as an operating system.
And, yes, I am well aware that it's best to install it on a second partition
And, yes, I have a copy of it outside of being a developer -- and so do many others -- so no speeches.

I would have waited for the regular user beta in July, but if enough of you think its stable enough to run, I will back up my current Yosemite and then install the beta as the main operating system.

Thanks in advance to those who are cool enough to answer this question without the normal warnings.

So far it hasn't been bad. A little laggy, some apps aren't working but most are good.

Anyone want to list MAJOR apps that are not working, or perhaps provide a link that may already exist on this subject?

Thanks, guys, for answering my question in a straightforward manner. That is what I was hoping for.

There's a "Sticky" thread for this at the top

Aaah, my apologies. I see it now. I should have looked harder

the only issue I have is Facebook doesn't load properly sometimes, but I'm not a FB addict.

Yeah, I couldn't get Facebook to load the next page after I typed in login info, although I do have 2fa turned on for it. Fixed it by going to m.facebook.com, logging in, and then went to Facebook.com, and it all worked fine.

[EDIT]: Haha, never mind, the page only loaded a few posts, didn't load the chat bar, and stopped when I refreshed. Gonna just use mobile.

It depends on what's your workflow. I've try it for few hours, the OS itself is very smooth, in fact, better than Yosemite. However, quite a few apps doesn't work. Some 3rd party hardware not working at all (which works in Mavericks / Yosemite without any extra kext).

It's obviously focus on performance, but not compatibility.

Im having the same problem with Facebook, lol. Other than that, most of the apps I need run stable. I am using this on a secondary machine, my primary iMac will stay with Yosemite for now.

Agreed! It's hard to gauge whether a beta will work for one person to the next depending on the apps they rely on, the machine they use, etc. etc. With Yosemite I read all kinds of issues from some folks while others (including me) had no issues at all. Yosemite has been a dream for me. Having said that I think I'll wait for the public beta on this one since I need my MBP to run without the usual small app glitches of a first beta. YMMV

Works great for me with the exception of Logitech control Center.. Gone back to an apple mouse for now. :)

El Capitan is working much better for me than Yosemite did.

Creative suite doesn't seem phased by it, Lightroom isn't bothered. Not found any software that doesn't run well yet.

Oh wow, so it's not just me....

If anything, Pinning Facebook has prevented me from checking it at 'crack addict pace' whenever I have 1 notification. Which is a nice addition to my life.

I can definitely see this is a beta, but it has nothing to do with Yosemite and iOS 8.
I'm in love with both new OSes. :)

Edit : Oh, so I was about to accuse Bell Canada about my Facebook and all my network problems. It looks like El Capitan's the one messing it up.

Just have to say this, because it bears repeating every time an OS X developer preview is released: There are likely lots of internal debugs switched on for debugging until the final product ships. Typically, whatever we get in Fall should perform a bit better once these are switched off.

In my experience, the OS is very responsive, particularly in UI animations. I guess this is the end result of Core Animation running on Metal now.

I'm seeing big time crashes in Mail since adding my POP3 gmail account. Mail won't even run. It crashes, gives me the option to sent a crash report and reopen Mail. As soon as I reopen Mail, it crashes again and the process repeats.

Otherwise, it's not too bad, but with Mail out of commission, it's a non-starter for my daily driver system.

My past experience with previous betas was, that they become stable after beta 5 or 6. I wouldn't upgrade my productive machines before that.

Agreed, though strangely I think I only encountered one issue through the whole Yosemite beta process. Well, at least so far! I'll probably wait till around the time the PB hits to give it a try on my daily driver.

I recommend to just make a small partition and install it. You can still access all files and apps from your other installation.
