I think I know what's going on. I used NoOTA or something similar before. Maybe it's carried over somehow.

When I restored to 8.1 it told me about 8.1.1 but stopped once I used Pangu.

I can't think of any other reason. I doubt Pangu blocks updates itself.

Pangu removes the OTA update launch daemon

It makes sense, because after 8.0.1 users were stuck on 8.0.1 and couldn't downgrade to 8.0.0.

Makes sense to leave 8.1.0 open in the event that there was a repeat of 8.0.1

You were able to downgrade to iOS 8.0 after 8.0.1 was launched

That could be it, I know that Battery Percentage is always on for me, even when unjailbroken and turned off in settings. So makes sense some smaller stuff can carry over in backups.

Still being signed. I'm selling my 5s jb. Did a fresh restore to 8.1 and new jb no problem

I wrote a couple days ago that a buddy of mine restored to 8.1.1 because he couldn't get 8.1 to restore. Well today he was able to downgrade to 8.1 FROM 8.1.1.

Anyone else wanna give it a try to see if it works? It would give some truth to my theory that Apple is keeping 8.1 available for people who have trouble in 8.1.1.

Wouldn't hurt to try if you're stuck on 8.1.1.

i wish it killed that evil bubble from OTA.

Ahhh, so you have the (1) on your Settings but Pangu is blocking your update?

Right, I get it. Mine has no (1) on the Settings icon at all.

Update: My iPhone is stuck at the Apple logo again! Third time I'll be jailbreaking 8.1 :(

It only happens when I do a full reboot. And, annoyingly, Pangu picks it up but can't go further because of the passcode lock. So far with Cydia and stuff it's only been Springboard restarts.

I think I'll leave the passcode off for a while. Good thing about living in Japan is I'm not constantly worried about having my iPhone stolen. Heck, people here leave phones on tables in Starbucks to reserve them while they order!

That's strange what do you usually install, it's gotta be one of those

Did you jailbreak using the latest pangu (1.2.1)? or have you updated pangu in Cydia? I remember early on they had grief with using a passcode

Thanks for the replies.

First time was Pangu 1.0 on Mac. Second time was Pangu 1.2.1 or whatever the latest PC one is(I was at work when it happened!).

Third time, this afternoon, was Mac again(same Pangu).

Passcode and touch ID were turned on well after restoring the backups each time.

As for Cydia stuff:

f.lux
SwipeSelection Pro
iFile
CCSettings (this time).

I'm not installing anything right now, just left Cydia and will see.

And as I said, it would lead to fragmentation like Android

Nope. Fragmentation would mean different hardware. Many users' sticking with / downgrading to old iOS versions is much-much more manageable for app developers - this is what i referred to. If we do look at people's using third-party apps, that is...

That is, Apple's allowing for downgrading wouldn't necessarily mean anyone downgrading is suddely presented by a lack of third-party apps. With an abndance of old iOS versions, devs would surely put more effort in making their apps compatible with those versions. Again, it's much easier than on Android as there are very few iDevice models.

Plus, right now if you download an app that doesn't work with your version of iOS it lets you download the most recent version that was.

Of course, people on older versions will miss out on newer features...

The fix for that boot loop issue is to jailbreak *after* you restore your old backup and synced files.

There's some type of corruption in your old jailbreaked backup that the new jailbreak fixes. Worked for me on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air.

Really? Thanks! The first two times I followed the directions exactly - restore(from DFU mode), jailbreak, restore from backup.

This third time I wasn't paying attention and did restore, followed by backup restore and finally jailbreak :)

I still haven't installed anything via Cydia and I'm backing up to iCloud so if it goes funny again I can restore at work. Hope Apple still signs 8.1 for a while longer!

So what? Just keep "signing" the older versions so we can at least go back to what came with the phone when we got it. I just want my older phone to run like it did before I made the mistake of updating. I don't give a rat's ass about "fragmentation". The only downside is that I won't be able to use the new iOS features and won't be able to use some newer apps that require newer OS versions. A minor inconvenience at most.
Why do people talk about fragmentation like it's the end of the world? If I restore iOS 6 on my iphone 5, the end result is no different than if I'd never updated in the first place. And plenty of people do that.
I personally think Apple should be legally required to allow users to restore their phones to the iOS they originally shipped with.

Trying to downgrade my iPhone 5 to 8.1 but keep getting an error says the firmware is not compatible, that's before it's even tried. I click shift and restore, select the ipsw and get the error.

I'm in the UK and have downloaded an 8.1 ipsw GSM from redmond pie.

Any ideas?

A few ideas:
Maybe you downloaded the file for the wrong device/carrier by mistake?
When I've downloaded ipsw files from Redmond Pie on a windows machine, the file saved with a .zip extension. I had to manually change to .ipsw to get iTunes to recognize it.
Maybe the file was corrupted? Re-download and try again.
Reboot everything and do DFU restore.
Burn some incense, say a few Hail Mary's and bow toward Mecca ;-)

Good luck!

Then Apple wouldn't be Apple, their closed system would be open..like Android.

You say that like it's a bad thing :)

It still wouldn't be open, unless you jailbreak.

IMO: jailbroken iOS > Android > stock iOS.

Haha, it'd done. Strangely enough it wouldnt work with the GSM one but the CMDA one worked fine.
