if you travel more, trust me, the iPad is a killer device.

my iPad runs as a windows 7 tablet (remote desktopping)

my iPad can play any movie of any codec via streaming on-demand

my iPad (wifi) can be tethered to my blackberry

i listed only a fraction of what the iPad can do. i love the iPad.

Maybe you could sell this idea to Ballmer...

I've worked with 'computers' since 1978. Really. I used to boot them by setting 16 physical switches to make a byte of code; repeated the exercise many times to get the computer to a usable state.

I've seen a few designs since then :)

Most of my work has been with Unix and Windows systems, but I find I have different needs at home.

The first Apple computer I worked with was a Lisa, the one before the Mac. The first Apple product I actually owned was an iPod 'classic' 60GB. I upgraded that to an iPod Touch, which I in turn upgraded to an iPhone 3GS, which I in turn upgraded for an iPhone 4

And I am a very happy owner of an iPad (64 GB, 3G).

I find I use my iPad for most tasks (when I can get my wife to give it back; and she's an IT-hater), the iPhone when I need serious portability, and the PC when I need serious processing power. For me it's a balance of tools that works well.

But I have to say, the one I actually enjoy using is the iPad. Can't say enough good things about it :)

Things I use my iPad for in a usual day

  1. Answering work email on the commute using Mail.app and web mail based services
  2. Organising my day using Omni Focus for iPad (Brilliant app)
  3. Reading Magazines & Technical Books (in PDF format), I don't use it so far for any novels.
  4. Minor edits of Mac created Pages and Numbers documents.
  5. Browsing the web
  6. Maps using GPS (not every day)
  7. The odd game of solitare :)
  8. The odd tweet using Twitterific
  9. Check Weather
  10. Talk to work colleagues using BeejiveIM
  11. Check Train times for my commute

Recommended Apps (ones I use at least once a week)

OmniFocus - Best todo list / GTD planner
F1 Live Timing - If you like F1 this is brilliant! (Moto GP one also exists)
BeeJiveIM - Expensive but the best IM program supports lots of IM services
Pages / Numbers / Keynote - MS Office on the go
Where's Wally - Loads of fun :)
GoodReader - The best PDF/Document reader
EyeTV - Stream your EyeTV picture to your iPad
AirVideo - Stream any Mac compatible video to your iPad even ones not in the correct format using transcoding!
CoPilot - Great SatNav app (I use the iPhone version on 2x)
AirDisplay - Use your iPad as a second monitor on your Mac

If you'd invested your money in watercolor paints instead, just imagine what great stuff you'd be doing by now! Or piano lessons!

I bought my iPad knowing how I was going to use it, and here I am, using it. Not because of some app, not because it was cool, but because I knew what I was buying. How come you didn't?

LMAO! I feel exactly the same way about this one.

I play Angry Birds all the time, one of my favorite games. Have you looked at the reviews? If you've only played once, you have absolutely no idea how challenging and addicting that game can get. So, you know, thanks for being insulting. You know, what you find "childish" and boring is what others find fun and relaxing, and what you find important is what others find incredibly dull. (I'd hate to see what you think of Osmos if you find Angry Birds lame.)

Well, I spent hours playing Angry Birds last night.
Bastard.

I think you may be absolutely right. Looking back at it, my research on the iPad did not extend beyond an article I read on the Onion website. You convinced me, I'm going to go sell my piece of **** iPad wifi and buy an iPad 64gb with 3G with a data plan ;) Sorry. I can't use my iPad for work because the Bloomberg app isn't as good as a real Bloomberg terminal :(

I just want Google Finance for the iPad/iPhone - Yahoo is **** just like Bloomberg, and i get News Bulletins via e-mail from ADVFN so i don't need their app, i am seriously considering getting a Google Nexus One phone just for the Google Finance App!

I still love my iPad.

But the lack of multi-tasking and iOS4 in general is really taking it down for me big time.

Since I've gotten my iPhone 4 I've used my iPad less and less. It all boils down to the lack of multi-tasking.

I've gone back to using my MacBook and PC laptops more in the last month than I had used them in the entire first few months of owning my iPad.

If I didn't own an iPhone I might have gotten an iPad 3G. But my iPhone 4 does everything the iPad does portable, except a few things that I would never realistically use away from home, like Pages. My iPhone 4, in fact, does more. Thanks to the camera.

The iPad also has a problem with app support. Far too many developers have the attitude that if their iPhone app works for the iPad then thats good enough. Then you have other developers that try to charge you 2-3x as much for the iPad version running at 1024x768 when the iPhone 4 version, costing significantly less, runs at 960x640. Why should I pay $10 for a $3 app just for an extra few pixels? I bet in a week here we'll see Madden released separately for the iPhone and iPad, one costing $9.99 and the other $14.99 and they'll be the exact same game, just different resolutions.

So, in short, the lack of iOS4/multi-tasking, and the way app developers either ignore iPad or try to milk it for far more than its worth is killing it for me. I'm sure that once the honeymoon period starts wearing off for people they'll think the same way.

I think if the prices are to high people will not buy them and the prices will drop to a level where most consumers are happy. I believe pricing is just like the App Store when it launched, it is having a period of adjustment but the customers will drive the pricing, I don't think that the pricing alone will effect the iPad or kill it overall. When most apps are less than a round of drinks or a bus ticket I don't think this a big deal.

Also I have to say I am willing to pay more for an iPad app as a well designed iPad app can be great for productivity compared to the same well designed iPhone app. Screen resolution is less of a deal as the screen size. With an iPad you can do so much more.

For example OmniFocus on iPhone was handy to use for checking off tasks but not really organising etc, the iPad app is so good I use it more than the OS X version!

I agree than a re-skinned version of the same app for more money is milking it but for every app milking it there is one which has been fully redesigned for the iPad screen often with new features, I don't have an issue paying more for an app like that. But just like you I don't like the reskinned app for an extra 2 or 3 pounds when you get nothing more for your money.

Oh no. Are you saying the iPad doesn't multi-task? Is this new? How could this happen that after 3 months the iPad still does not multi-task? Surely Steve Jobs must have mentioned this in his presentation that the iPad will get iOS4 and multi-tasking in the Autumn upgrade.
