It is not productive to say a thread should be closed because it does not apply to current Apple products.
In this sub forum, yes it is. If it was in the general discussion sub forum I would agree.

This is the Zen thread for the whole site. It is irrelevant in which subforum it is located.

Actually it is.
Same as if someone posted something about any other non apple related product.
But I see where you're going with this and I won't engage you further. I have no time to waste.

It seems boutique PC vendors will be able to sell TR systems this year.

Which makes sense, as they could just buy retail parts.

Mods: Why is an AMD CPU thread that's irrelevant to Mac Pro systems still running in the Mac Pro forum?

How are "boutique PC vendors" relevant to anything Mac Pro?

The iMac Pro shows that Apple's future is looking at Xeons, not ThreadKillers.

Isn't it about time to move this to the "alternatives" forum?

TR Alienware exclusive in 2017?

You will still be able to DIY.
really?? that's dell and why would they lockout HP / Sony / lenovo?? as well the smaller guys.

Still just think of an alt history apple with an 1st gen mac pro with amd cpu's with more pci-e (Yes back then the Intel one had less then the g5 ones and AMD systems with NFORCE PRO had more)

Maybe it is, maybe it is not. Apple has to go with Xeons this year, because Thunderbolt 3 protocol is not open to everybody, and AMD cannot use it freely in their hardware. Next year is the year of release of Thunderbolt 3 protocol, and also, the supposed release of Mac Pro 2018.

Because others may get "exclusivity" over Epyc CPUs. HP Also got first deal for offering Vega GPU in their computer(HP Omen).

There are rumors about this situation, why Dell would get the exclusive deal with AMD, but nothing concrete. Something about internal politics however.

I have asked before you guys, what do you think about possibility about Dell jumping ship from Intel to AMD for CPU deals. This is not exactly "jumping ship", however in Dell there is currently huge hype over AMD(actually, not only in Dell). Count out what Dell has announced over past few weeks with Ryzen and RTG hardware solutions. And are always first to integrate Ryzen/AMD GPUs on their hardware. On the other hand the management is too scared of losing money from not offering Intel. Their brand appeal is much stronger than AMD and Nvidia.

But hardware value is also very strong, and Dell, and others sees this. AMD offers Broadwell-E 6900K CPU for 350$, currently. That is exceptional value.

I think if this happened it means Dell bought basically the whole Threadripper OEM allocation for 2017.

But maybe a Threadripper PRO will come a couple months after launch.

Which would explain why this is an Alienware deal, and not Dell.

I like how you completely changed your tune from before when TB3 was not announced to go cross platform.

Before you said 'even though TB3 is licensed by Intel, AMD/Apple can buy a $10 controller and make it work!'. Now it's 'We have to wait until TB3 is cross platform'.

I also second/third that this thread should not be in this subforum. There is absolutely no rumour to suggest Apple is planning on using AMD processors. What we have here is a case of AMD releasing a processor that is supposedly feasible to put in Macs (which is actually not even true, but I'm not gonna go into the details of that). This thread is an example of alternative hardware.

https://videocardz.com/70266/amd-epyc-7000-series-specs-and-performance-leaked

So AMD decided to combine 4 Ryzen dies into single CPU, for 128 PCIe lanes, but even in 8 core config, made from 2C/4T cut down CPUs.

Prices are very good.

4000$ for 32C/64T, 180W TDP CPU is very impressive. Previous generation Intel CPU with 24 cores was almost 9000$... Im wondering if Intel will be able to compete on pricing...

P.S. It is apparent now, that biggest, and possibly best technology AMD invented for their internal purposes is Infinity Fabric.

I thought that maybe AMD would not make 1 core per CCX CPUs because of lack of severly faulty dies.

Maybe there could be 4 core Threadripper then, but probably anybody buying into this platform wants at least 8 cores.

A question would be if AMD would make 8 core Threadripper based on Ryzen 3, asumming this consists of only one CCX.

Are you sure 8 core Epyc is not using less CCX?

All of Epyc CPUs have 128 PCIe lanes, hence 4 Ryzen dies. All of them also have maximum amount of L3 cache, so it is one core, per CCX.

I think indeed, Ryzen 3 must surely be Raven Ridge without GPU (1 CCX).
You are close to reality ;).

Are you saying Ryzen 3 is Raven Ridge with GPU disabled or that Ryzen 3 is Raven Ridge (which might include some models with GPU disabled)?
AMD has the flexibility of using every die they make: Zen or Raven Ridge for Ryzen 3 CPUs.

What is important in this context is that for AMD its much better to sell fully enabled CPUs, which are the majority of all of the dies they manufacture, for lower prices, than cut down the working ones, and sell for even less.

I think soon enough it will be obvious what AMD is planning to do.

Raven Ridge is a kind of Zen.

If there's a specific Ryzen 3 die that does not have a GPU at all, it is lacking a name.

More correctly: Summit Ridge die, and Raven Ridge die ;).

That is what we are looking at.
