It seems there will be 12nm Zen and Vega next year.

So I imagine the core count per die will not increase.

So far the rumors are a higher IPC, higher frequencies - able to sustain frequencies over 4.2GHz. Also hoping Zen 2 increases the PCIe lanes - 32 would be perfect, as I'd love to run with three M.2 cards (boot, active jobs, and cache/scratch disk space)

Increasing PCIe lanes would be the most important thing, as Threadripper is quite expensive.

Right - and not everyone needs 64 PCIe lanes. But going getting halfway there would be a huge plus. If I knew that was happening, I'd be jumping on a Ryzen 1700x build right now, then upgrading the CPU next year.

They also need to increase that IPC - the single core performance of the Ryzen 7 is lagging way behind Intel. For me, using Capture One Pro is a multicore monster. It will chew through all 8-cores. But Photoshop is single/dual core application. So finding that perfect balance between faster single core performance and fast multicore performance is tricky.

I believe Intel hit the sweet spot with the 7820X. Just wish it was $100 less expensive.

I think even if CPUs with more lanes came out, you would need a new motherboard to use them (not necessarily a new chipset).

And for it to happen, it needs to be possible with the current sockets.

Let's see if there'll be a custom version of this SoC in next Mac Mini, who knows, maybe next February or later. The start of the AMD era, and the beginning of the end of the Hackintosh era... New Mac Mini could be near the size of AppleTV and... it could actually run tvOS as well. Custom AMD APU with Apple A10 on same SoC. Two OS's run on one machine side by side. The A10 would work also as a security enclave and the gate to the SSD drive.

Mac Mini (good), Ryzen 5 2500U + A10, 8GB RAM, 256 SSD $499
Mac Mini (better), Ryzen 7 2700U + A10, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD $799

Mac Mini (best), Intel 8700k, Radeon RX 580, 16GB Ram (user upgradeable to 64GB), 256GB NVMe M.2 SSD (user upgradeable to 1TB + 1 extra user upgradable NVMe M.2 SSD slot) - $1,700

This is my 2017/2018 dream machine, and Apple will never make it.

Perhaps not *this* CPU, but Intel i7 8650U is available. 580 comes in a cut-down mobile version. RAM and SSD will probably be soldered on, though SSD might be a bespoke M.2-style solution, like some of the MacBook Pros are.

I want 6 cores, not 4. I wouldn't even care if the Mac Mini went double height for the "best" version. ;)

Studio quality 8k raw video stream needs 6GB(48Gb)/s read/write speeds....

Now, at editing they might need to run several 8k streams to cut and encode it.

It does not support RAID 5,6,50, or 60 :(

You should be able to easily RAID 12 drives (x8 GPU). Get on board 10GbE then. Assuming the motherboard allows PCIe splitting.

I've just built a Ryzen rig based around a 1700, Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K7 and 16GB of G.Skill TridentZ RAM. Liking it very much so far. I'm still pushing the boundaries of how far I can overclock it.

I make no bones about being an AMD fan (as a Scot, I'm used to backing the underdog), but I feel that this is AMD returning to the days of the Athlon XP and the first 64-bit processors.

I agree, there is significant overlap between the FX series and Ryzen in terms of pricing. Unless you are forced to upgrade an existing board, why invest in an old socket?
I think I will wait a whole year to get Zen+ and would like something more efficient, cool, and silent than my Phenom II, but cheap.

I finally ordered some AM4-compatible cooling components and will stick to the Phenom II for at least another year. FX is a hard sell if you already have an X6 at these Wraith prices and availability.

Not quite sold on water, at least with the stock TR4 solution.

Maybe I'll buy a bare used FX next time if they get dumped.
