where we can see this?
I'm not sure but I know I read at least one person saying their fan was quite loud doing normal tasks, they returned it and the new system was quiet.
where we can see this?
It's both. Well when gaming anyway the gpu gets insanely hot and the fans go into overdrive but they can't bring the temperature down.

I have to say, after spending 3k after tax - I wished it performed better in games. I know the slim design is affecting the heat dissipation because games run fine for awhile but then it gets sluggish eventually when the imac overheats and throttles the card down....
we need a solution
u woulda think apple figured out a way because its unfair to spend so much for a video card and not get all ur bang from it because of heat
my takeaway from the thread;
1) I found that GPU is generally hotter when running Chrome instead of Safari.
2) iStat and GPU-Z for me is reporting startup temp ~15c higher than ambient temp even after immediately waking from deep sleep... I feel somethings wrong there... either with the programs or with how Windows and OS X reports it
3) On normal tasks, I found OS X to be cooler than Win7 under bootcamp.
4) When playing games, Win 7 was cooler, allowed higher settings and gave better fps.
These are great observations, very useful to note. I've noticed that Chrome hits the GPU and the CPU harder doing the same thing. Really makes a difference on a MBP.
BTW there's nothing wrong with the temperature sensors here. The GPU is small piece of silicon, easily capable of heating up 15C in a fraction of a second as soon as it's on and dissipating tens of watts.
Does that mean it's normal for all gpu to be around 15C higher than room temperature when you start your iMac? I think my m295x is also usually 15C higher than room temperature, if not slightly more.

you wish. light activity after sleep mode like writing this post brings the m295x to 56C with 25C ambient room temperature, which is ok since fan at 1200 rpm is hardly noticeable unless it's very quiet.
even though I was lucky and don't have the mission control issues or the youtube issues with the m295x, the gaming issue with gpu diode temp and consequent fan speed remains. delivery will pick up my imac next week to have it returned. will probably use my macbook air until either design flaw is fixed or a smarter gpu choice is offered.
I have been working on benchmarks for around 50 games and apps over the past week; a continuation of some of the work I did when the 2012 680mx iMacs were released two years ago.

But heat and the throttling I have experienced is a big problem for anyone wanting complete performance. As it stands, is the screen worth a GPU that is only 3-5fps better than a stock 680MX, and worse than an overclocked 680MX? My heart is breaking, I would have paid anything for a 980mxThoughts?
So is the M290X actually the better buy?
So you saying unless you want to run an external monitor the i7 and 295 are pointless?
Is it a hybrid? The extra memory of the 290x would definately help with digital imaging.

thanks. fan speed of 2004-2124 rpm is still to high for me and too loud; tested it with smc fan pro.
apple sucks, seriously. I've been waiting for a decent mac and seriously considering buying an old one now since gpu and fan cause more problem than the nice screen adds as benefit. I'll wait for another year until the change back from amd.
Finished single player campaign of COD: Advanced Warfare at 1440 and everything on max with no AA, it was buttery smooth throughout and never got sluggish. Maybe your issue is with the game? I played under bootcamp windows 8.1, from external USB3 SSD.
Not sure if this was posted or not. Barefeats.com posted benchmarks comparing the 290 to the 295, and surprisingly - the 290 beats the 295 on a couple of them. Makes no sense right? They guessed it is due to faster clock speed in the 290, but I think it may have something to do with the issue we're noticing here.

If you game on an iMac, you do so with headphones obviously.
i did but through my open headphones i still heard the fan noise which was about 40db.
Received my i7 4 retina iMac the noise of the fans and comments about high temperatures are making me worry about hot days in summer. These days in November outside temps are about 10C, I am worried what iMac will do, when outside will be very hot and not necessary AC in the room.
Anyone out there using RiMac in tropical conditions? Will the fan go on even while surfing or doing regular stuff? What do you think? I am seriously considering sending this one back and wait for the revision. These 100C processor temps look no good at all.
i now found out why my win8.1 bootcamp wow fps was so slow: energy settings.
putting them to high and you'll get 80-120 fps with 4k resolution and medium settings in wow and full fan speed/noise.
putting them to energy saver you'll get annoying 40-60 fps with 4k resolution and low settings, however it kinda lags and gives me headaches but fan speed/noise is more moderate and rather tolerable.
edit: i7 and m295x. if you can stand the noise, this is quite the game experience!
