Scratch that, For a new card they want $324. Else they want $150 to flash one you send in..
Yep, thats why lot's of people still buy GTX-680/HD 7970/R9-280/R9-280X, the last self flashed cards for MP5,1.

If you need a new GPU for hardware encoding/video editing with a MP5,1 and really need pre-boot configuration support, MVC is the only way to go.

But if you are [un?]lucky enough to have a 3,1 ... you can get a non Apple but completely usable boot screen with the GOP cards (like the RX580) and not have to flash the card. :)

Really? What's special about the 3,1?
Here are the relevant threads ... but for some reason it seems that the 3,1 can load "GOP" ROMs early enough in the boot/POST to be useful, allowing a native like experience. It lets you pick OS to boot, enter single user mode, use filevault, have verbose boot just like you'd expect.

For some reason the 4,1/5,1 can't do this.

Wonder why this is ? is it a hardware or software issue causing this?

1. The last AMD GPU that supports UGA pre-boot is Sapphire HD 7950 Mac Edition.
The HD 7950 Mac Edition EFI can be used on GPUs with the same Tahiti processors:
HD 7970, R9-280 & R9-280X.

2. After those, all newer AMD GPUs are "GOP" and won't work with MP5,1 "UGA"

3. MVC modified RX 580 firmware to interoperate with MP5,1 EFI/UGA combo,
the only way to have pre-boot support with a newer than R9-280X AMD GPU.

Hey buddy, just to double check (as you spoke concisely). ...

1. Meaning, read the 7950 ROM and write it to other Tahiti-processor GPUs
HD 7970, R9 280 / 280x ... if it fits on the ROM and you know what you're doing.
• Desolder, use a socket it fits in, copy the driverless mode, return it to the 7950.
• Use extracted info, edit (replace) target-ROM, update ROMs MD5, desolder / flash / replace chip (if it can fit the data!)

2. GOP ..? Ghost on POST..? What's this acronym..? And UGA is the resolution Macs require during POST..?

3. MVC = Mac Video Cards ... referring to the business which practices and saves a library of the above..?

Thus, the only way to have boot support on a DosDude MP5,1 with Catalina is either an:
• HD 7950 Mac Edition
• A flashed GPU
• Use OpenCore or some analogous bootloader..?

Thanks dude. Much Appreciated!

About flashing cards, we can almost say that is completely obsolete (some very specific situations may still require it or be easier to do with a flashed GPU, like diagnostics or to run very old macOS releases that don't work well with OpenCore).

If you still want to flash your Tahiti GPU, there is a thread specific for flashing it and also this reference post:

2. GOP ..? Ghost on POST..? What's this acronym..? And UGA is the resolution Macs require during POST..?
POST = Power On Self Test.

UGA and GOP are EFI/UEFI protocols to interact with GPUs, not resolutions.

Please use the search/google it and learn about anything that you don't know, these acronyms are very well known and no need to re-write it here.

3. MVC = Mac Video Cards ... referring to the business which practices and saves a library of the above..?

Catalina is obsolete since September, Apple won't release Security Updates even Catalina having several security failures being actively exploited completely unpatched. It's dead and buried.

Dosdude1 abandoned patching since OpenCore/OCLP gained traction. So, learn to use OpenCore/OCLP and move your workflow to BigSur/Monterey.

Thanks dude. I will assume (since DOSdude1's method is "obsolete") it means even with OpenCore there's absolutely no performance penalty ... and nominal risk of even a problem if a customer asks for one ... with it becoming a headache, potentially requiring shipping ... once the OpenCore is is configed and possibly saved to a backup just in case..?

Thanks

Patching is even more risky than with OpenCore/OCLP, but you have to assess the risks and learn about all possible issues and workarounds yourself, like having a Mojave fail-over disk and etc.

Has anyone noticed their 5,1 freezing when waking from Display sleep/screensaver with their AMD Radeon RX 580? It seems to happen to me every other day where I have to force reboot by holding the power button for a few seconds. I've tried digging through Console logs to see if I could find anything obvious, but nothing stands out. I've tried reinstalling Mojave but the issue keeps occurring. If anyone has any troubleshooting tips I would be eternally grateful, as I can't afford a new Mac at this time.

FWIW, I've tried a handful of screensavers (Flurry, Arabesque, Aerial, and even Message), but the freeze/unresponsiveness keeps occurring :(
