I've also noticed that whenever it wakes up from sleep, it doesn't wake up fast and unless I had no issues it will either 1) screen will freeze and I have to manually turn on the monitor to wake the OS up, and 2) when 1) happens the Mac OS was crashed and it was either restarted or will throw a crash error for me to submit to Apple.

Has anyone encountered the issue with non-Apple AMD cards? I have a reference AMD 6900XT.

Also, do you guys see GPU memory taxing at 100% even at idle? Is this normal for non-Apple GPU? I don't recall seeing it like this with other cards (Mac Edition GTX1080, W5700X and Radeon 5870) I wonder why this is happening. I also have RTX3090 installed together.

Update: it looks like it's an unfixable issue by istats. https://bjango.com/help/istatmenus5/knownissues/

Yup so this is what I got for the problem report:

Again - Not the case for me:

Use HiDPI resolution can greatly increase the VRAM consumption, I use 3840x1080 HiDPI, which can even saturate my Radeon VII’s 16GB VRAM.

If you are using any HiDPI resolution, you may temporary select that back to the normal x1 resolution (e.g. your monitor’s native resolution), and see if the VRAM usage still stay high.

If you believe that’s iStat issue, you can grab the VRAM usage from terminal.

Now it has greatly reduced to 50~60% after closing out all the apps. I guess it was a temporary thing.

I have 3 triple monitors and I can't even do 144hz, only capped at 95hz with the latest Mac OS update (using DisplayPort). And right now after closing all the apps, now it's at around 50~60%. After putting them back to default now I see 6~15% so I guess you're right. I'm still baffled at why I no longer can't do 144hz without any issue, in addition to this sleep-wake crash that I'm constantly getting in the above post. I've never had this issue before with Mac Edition GTX680 before.

Is there any way to make 'Default for display' a 144hz, and any way to not have this crashing after waking up from sleep or lock screen?

On the Windows 10 side, I had a driver update as of Oct 8 which I installed about 4-5 days ago, and ever since I updated the driver, for some reason on both Windows/Mac OS I haven't had any crashes. However, I have been using an HDMI port instead of the USB-C port as I read it somewhere that the USB-C port was reserved for virtual reality specifically and not necessarily for external monitors. All in all, I'm glad that it's not haunting me anymore. But DSC is still not working on Mac OS properly (not outputting 144hz instead only showing 95hz on DisplayPort, and only 60hz instead of 120hz on HDMI 2.1 port). Outputs 144hz and 120hz properly on Windows 10 Boot Camp.

EDIT: Ok never mind, it looks like Mac OS is still the same. I was wondering how installing a driver on the Windows side would help Mac OS, but there goes my guess.

Just FYI, I obtained Samsung 28" 4k 144hz monitor S28G70 and noticed the following vs my currently owned LG GP950 (27" 4k 144hz HDMI 2.1version):

*The screen is 1" bigger and I can definitely notice the difference.
*Unlike LG GP950, it doesn't have an OSD FPS counter. For me this is huge (even LG GN950 didn't have one).
*On Mac OS, it only supports up to 60hz on HiDPi mode at 1920x1080 (retina mode), unlike 95hz on LG GP950. You can set it up to 144hz on non-HiDPi mode though, which is also different from LG GP950.
*On Mac OS,
*On Windows 10, Samsung can output 4k 144hz on HDMI 2.1. Not sure how this is possible...I thought HDMI 2.1 only has up to 120hz (as my LG GP950 can only do up to 4k 120hz on Windows 10).
*For some reason, I cannot adjust the graphics setting on Samsung. At default settings or something that is controllable, LG seems to be more flexible in settings.
*Also, while Samsung has a PIP mode it doesn't work when I connected my Mac Pro using DP1.4 port and Xbox Series X on HDMI 2.1. Only HDMI 2.1 was visible.

Overall, while I appreciate a similar price point vs the LG counterpart and 1" bigger real estate, I will stick with LG GP950. It looks like Samsung is a bit buggy for some reason and in terms of picture quality, I favor slightly more on the LG.

I thought HDMI 2.1 only has up to 120hz
The refresh rate limit depends on the bandwidth of the connection, the bits per pixel, and the number of pixels per frame.

HDMI 2.1 can do up to 48 Gbps (12 Gbps 4 lanes) but it uses 16b/18b encoding so the data is 42.67 Gbps. It might use FEC which will drop that by another 3%.
Some HDMI 2.1 displays may be limited to 10 or 8 or 6 Gbps per lane.

4K 120Hz uses a pixel clock of 1188 MHz (HDMI timing). At 30 bpp, that would be 35.6 Gbps.

Chroma sub sampling can be used to reduce color info while keeping luminance info (fine for black and white text but makes coloured text blurry). 4:2:2 can reduce 30 bpp to 20 bpp. 4:2:0 can reduce 30 bpp to 15 bpp.

DSC is a visually lossless compression method that can compress 36 bpp down to 12 bpp (or even 8 bpp but I haven't seen that get used by Apple). At 12 bpp, 4K 120Hz only requires 14.25 Gbps. So you could increase the refresh rate. 4K 240 Hz is 2332 MHz (using CVT-RB timing) and requires 28 Gbps.

Chroma sub sampling and DSC can be combined to allow for even more pixels per second.

That's a known issue with MacOS Monterey which I presume you're on since this bug doesn't exist in Big Sur.

I used 2019MACPRO, I replaced the 6900XT graphics card by myself, used the Warcraft HDMI2.1 cable, the TV is Sony 9000 H, the interface is connected to the fourth port, and VVR is turned on, but the maximum refresh rate in the system settings is only 60 Hz. , The system is Apple's latest 12.1 version. . .

Do you mean you installed a 6900XT into a 2019 Mac Pro?
What's a Warcraft HDMI2.1 cable?
Maybe VRR only works from DisplayPort?
I don't think Apple's AMD RDNA2 series drivers support the HDMI 2.1 port at greater than HDMI 2.0 speeds?

I have the 6900XT in a MacPro7,1 28 core with 192GB RAM and I get this Kernel Panic ocassionally.

Does anyone know if it's related to the GPU or memory? I ram Memtest and didn't find issues yet.

^^^^I can tell you when I was running an RX5700XT I would crash (panic) at least once and sometimes more times per day. I chalked it up to poor drivers. Since I switched to an RX6800XT I have never had a crash?

I have 16 core with 96GB RAM.

Thanks for the info!

Well I have the 6900XT and have those KPs.

Did you get NMIPI KPs?

I am thinking I will try another slot for the 6900XT and maybe swap out my RAM. Might be a bad RAM module. It really sucks that this is a Pro machine and I get constant freezes. Classic Apple
