Yeah that link just reroutes you right back to the App Store anyways. Attempting to download it again for the 130000000th time. I managed to get the update through Software Update yesterday but I cant download the full installer from the store still. Last attempt about 20 mins ago gave me the error immediately, at least this time its moving, hopefully it finally finishes..

EDIT: Nope download failed again while I was hitting the 'reply' button just now.

Edit#2: Third times a charm.. Tried it again, download flew this time, and FINALLY the installer opened. Grabbed that sucker and copied it quick to my storage drive hah. Time to make a USB installer now!

^^^^That link routes you back to the App Store for the full installer. Where else could it be❓No system check. As I posted, I downloaded the full installer twice.

Anyone know how to fix this...

I can download the update from the apple direct link posted earlier in this thread to get the file "InstallAssistant.pkg"

Then I can run that file to get the installer... Then I can run the Terminal command:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

Then It says the following:

Ready to start.
To continue we need to erase the volume at /Volumes/Untitled.
If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: Y
Erasing disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%... 100%
Copying to disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%... 40%... 50%... 60%... 70%... 80%... 90%... 100%
Making disk bootable...
Couldn't extract BaseSystem to path: /Volumes/Install macOS Big Sur/BaseSystem
The bless of the installer disk failed.

Anyone know how to get the "Making disk bootable..." part to work? Thanks!

Hi all,
today I contacted Apple Support by chat. I explained that the Big Sur Installation fails with the message "An error Occurred While Installing the Selected Updates" and also I've tried every possible solution (Safe Mode, New Account, Reinstall Catalina, OPTION + CMD + R etc...) so after a while I was contacted by Level 2 Engineer. She said me that looking at Apple Server Log the problem seems due to a Firewall in my network or modem/router but I have not any Firewall activated. So I disconnected and reconnected my modem just to obtain a new public IP and the Big Sur download worked without any issue...
I have not idea what really happened but something was wrong with my public IP and Big Sur server because with the old IP I was able to install Catalina!!!

Nope didn't work for me. Using FiOS here..... got a new public IP and also changed the firewall from medium to minimal. Still got the installation failure after a full download (although very fast up to 2, 4, 6, 8 ,10, 12 GB) of 12.18 GB..... sits for ~2 minutes then fails. Have not heard back from Apple support.

So, has anyone received an error about Gatekeeper preventing InstallAssistant.pkg from loading? This is a really poor roll out. I figured after waiting a few days it'd be good to go.

  1. Activate a hotspot with your iPhone or Smartphone
  2. Connect your Macbook/iMac/Mac mini to hotspot
  3. Start the update from System Preference -> Software Update
  4. When the download start or during the download-> disconnect your Mac from hotspot and connect it to your wifi or you can use a Lan adapter. You must be very fast.
  5. The download will be completed with the new connection
  6. The same workaround works for clean install because the same issue appears during download.
I tried two times and it worked flawlessly.
Hope this works also for you all!!!

Well I wish it would have worked but it fails the exact same way.

@whsbuss Really sorry. I found this, please let me know if it works.

A workaround is to enter this into the Terminal prior to running the installer:
sudo nvram IASUCatalogURL=https://swscan.apple.com/content/ca...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

After done upgrading, you should update the nvram back:
sudo nvram -d IASUCatalogURL


A lot of people say that it works...
Actually Apple had me do that on Friday with the same result. NVRAM did not work either. Hoping they get back to me next week.

did they ask to try with another connection or hotspot?

I'm using my iMac 27-inch 2019 model with macOS Mojave v10.14.6. I downloaded the macOS Sur (~12 GB), followed the instructions to install on my macintosh HD, and was prompted with a window to reboot.

This is when the problem happens. Upon rebooting the iMac screen showed the apple logo for about 3 seconds (without the progress bar) and shut down immediately.

I had to press cmd + R and use time machine in Utilities to use my latest screenshotted time machine, so I am back with Mojave. Decided to install the macOS Sur package for the second time, and the SAME problem happened.

Any idea what is the root cause of the problem, and how to solve it? Couldn't find much information when I googled my problem.

I am certain I have more than enough storage space (1.72TB available of 2.12 TB) on my HD so this is not a concern.

Worked with senior support today and came up empty. Even a restore from the Internet boot up failed with PKDownloadError. Watching the system install.log you can see it do 6 attempts while downloading before the install error. So another sysdiagnose dump back to the engineering team.

Final resolution:

After researching the PKdownload Error I tried using ethernet and adding openDNS 8.8.8.8 to my router. Still failed the same way. Did a release and renew of the public IP (which I did a few days ago without a fix) and it downloaded without a problem. Strange... I guess the Apple servers kept seeing the error'ed IP and never resolve it.
