Installed Chrome, Firefox and Edge to see. I’m not 100% certain since I’m not a professional in browsers, but I think it’s still WebKit based…

I’m afraid we’ll be waiting until at least a few updates later, maybe even until February/March… Since the deadline is on March the 6th

try this chrome://version/

It will be linked to your Apple ID’s region - not the origin of the device.
Can't be linked to the Apple ID since sideloaded apps are not subject to the ID and you can also use a device without an Apple ID.
Sideloading means being able to do things based on what the OS allows and not the ID provider.

My guess is it’ll use the region the device was activated in, which happens before the Apple ID is signed in

It is very likely to be a result of the article/model number and its ending. This format is already used to apply geo restrictions such as having no access to FaceTime.

It's different restricting access vs granting it, what happens if an EU based user is using an iPhone purchased elsewhere?

Then it‘s the same thing

It’s like when you import a product for self use which has not been certified, and the manufacturer is not to be held responsible for imported reselling. They do, in fact, have a product already selling in said markets.

From a legal standpoint, it‘s also not just about the software, and the whole legal complex also involves registration and a permit to sell a product that‘s already adjusted for the target market. Said model numbers and their country codes decide which iOS version gets on which iPhone when contacting Apple software update servers.

why would the browser engine magically change? Obviously the developers would have to update it and that is not going to be allowed to be published in the store until iOS 17 goes live and even then it isnt even officially coming yet. :)

It was more of a test for wether browsers were anything different yet and not just a skinned Safari…

I am also quite curious how the different browsers will fare with their different engines. So you will get an App Store version with the usual WebKit engine and an offline version with their usual engine. Nice

Where does this come from? Any references? Does it really make sense for a developer to maintain 2 versions?

Yea, but since Apps would have to be updated and app using the Xcode for iOS 17 cannot be submitted to the App Store for review a week before iOS 17 comes out (with the app updates being released on iOS 17's release), it's a pointless test......

If they release an update via TestFlight, then that could be tested, but they haven't even had time to do that yet, really.

They don‘t need to submit it to the App Store, they can just test it internally. Iirc, there have already been news of at least Chrome getting tested with its own engine, and it‘s already months old.

You sure? I visited Tokyo in March and I can’t remember having shutter sound active.

@casvdijk I think as Apple didn’t mention it side loading will arrive with 17.2 or 17.3 (which is the March update)

I have a Japanese 13 mini. Shutter sound is present only while I am in Japan

Live photos are shutter-free, so could be that — or carrier/sim related

Interestingly my UK SE (original) never made a sound in Japan 😵‍💫

Yes, but my point was actually about how we cannot test it, I was replying to the person who was asking if anyone using the beta could see if they were using a skinned Safari still or not.

Maybe you missed the context of my reply, by ignoring the post I was replying to.

Is it true it’s locked for Japan ? I live in Japan and when I moved here I had a Pixel 6, when I arrived the shutter sound was force turned on. But I bought my iPhone here. I’ll be back in the EU in august and really hope I can sideload once back there.
It is. Japanese iPhones can never turn off the shutter sound. It’s hardware linked.
